View Full Version : Hammerdin or Smitadin?

I have a Paladin, leveled up to 23, with no skills, stats, or anything put in to him yet. However, he is almost impossible to play with now, because I can't kill anything and die in 2 hits or less. I think it's time to finally make a build out of this blank slate.
So, I was thinking of one of the two mentioned in the title. This is for PvP purposes of course (why else would it be in this forum?), though mainly pubbies and other places with little or no restrictions.
Which build do you suggest and why? What steps should I take towards that build? What items would I need to make a successful build? Etc.

IMO a smiter is more viable since a hammerdin loses vs most casters anyway...
WHy not make a hammer/smiter if you cant choose ? could be a new build...

Lol no he doesnt. All you do is absorb and their attacks heal/do low dmg to you. Then you desynch them with vigor charge or try to namelock them. Either way they die. Necro can't be absorbed thats why you keep an emergency sanctuary in stash, if they stack revive just wait 3 mins or just avoid them.
Seriously the only threat to hammerdin is wind druid (druid usually wins).

I've seen a build guide for a Hammer/Smite build. I despised it though, as it seemed to be nothing more than an inefficient hybrid that combines both in order to gain tactical flexibility at the expense of power in either attack specifically.
Of course, that was only that one build guide... If you can direct me towards something more useful, then please, I'm all ears.
If you are new to the game, new to pala, go for hammer. It's easier to kill with not so good items...

ehm only 1 absorb item is allowed (2for cold) and i would like to see your pala absorb my sorcs blizzard with only 2 absorb items

RainOfChaos is clearly a BM player, he plays by no rules. There is no sense in trying to preach to him.
If you are going to turn this pally into a dueler, I'd first like to know what kind of gear you have available to him. I would suggest Hammerdin over smiter seeing as how smiters can only really beat other melee/close range duelers and has no chance against a tele/ranged dueler. A Hammerdin if played right certainly has a chance against most of the other popular builds out there. If you have the wealth for 10 pally combat charms and other top end gear, I'd suggest you try a mage pally (hammers/foh). It takes skill to use but can be very effective. FoH will kill just about anything without stacked res with ease and then you can switch over to hammers if they negate your FoH.

I have absolutely no gear worth mentioning. All of my accounts have expired from before, and I'm just starting up again. I'm not new to the game, so the skill factor of hitting with the hammerdin isn't neccesary to calculate.
I've been trying to get back into PvP, but just can't find any gear. I've also started a PvP Summoning Necro, who I believe should be the least gear-reliant build, for now.
So, this brings me to my next question- How the hell are you supposed to get all of that excellent PvP gear like Enigma and BotD which seems to be oriented in every build nowadays? I've tried MFing again, but just get absolutely no luck. If I had a nickel for each hour I spent doing runs without finding a unique, I'd have a heavy sack to beat Meph over the head with right now....

Trading is probably the best bet for getting rich. I would do hellforge rushes for some starting wealth. This works much better on ladder though.
If you are playing west nonladder, keep an eye out for a giveaway. If turbulentturtle doesn't use my gear in his giveaway for the trade forum, then I will have one of my own in the druid forum. Lots of shakos/tal sets/wizs/etc going.

Snowclash + Ravenfrost + 4 socket psapphire pally shield + a few charms to negate CM. Consider an 18k blizzard. After the pvp penalty it will be 3k. Normally this would be doubled by the -100 cap of CM up to 6k. However with enough stacked resists your opponent will instead take 10% of that which is 300. Ravenfrosts absorbs 20% of this (60) and snowclash absorbs 15, leaving you with a 150 damage blizzard. Sure it still hurts but it's not exactly terrible.

18K blizz:
3k after pvp
300 after 90% res and over resisting mastery
2xraven = 40% absorbed = 80% reduced
300-80%=60
60 dmg per blizz - if you're wearing snowclash you get extra 15 absorb which is -30
18K blizz reduced to 30 dmg per blizz.
MUCH less if lower dmg blizz. 18K is pretty rediculous, even top sorcs have ~15K, unless they take skill shrine and use +3 cold skills circlet and +3 cold skills ammy. Perfect gear too.

Looks like turbulent will be getting them. Watch out for the big giveaway hes having in the trade forum. Its a number guessing thingy so good luck :)

Try main aura as Holy Freeze.Keep put on Smite and Blessed hammer.While making PvM just Smite monster under the screen and keep singing for more BH...It was my pally strategy I called that as Chaos Bringer.Don't forget Holy Shield too.I had killed many 70+Conc-zerk and a 68 WW barb. while just in 58 on PvP.(LAN*)
