Ladder question

This is my first time ever trying ladder. What happens when the ladder is reset? I don't xp chars too quickly and I've heard mixed information as to what happens when it gets reset. Any feedback as always is appreciated,

When the ladder is reset, all ladder characters and their items are converted to non-ladder.

Thats not true. The levels will remain the same after reset.

No, people just make new characters at the start of a new season.
