Do you always get the maximum number of sockets when you cube-socket a plain white armor or shield, the same way you would get 4 sockets in it from Larzuk? Or is there some probability distribution in effect?
Many thanks for your answers!

I'm trying to remember exactly how it goes, so if this isn't correct, I'm sure someone else will come in and say so. When you put an item in and use the cube socket recipe you have a 1/6 chance to get each number (1 through 6) on any item. Since an armor can have a max of 4 sockets, the breakdown should be as follows:
1/6 1 socket
1/6 2 socket
1/6 3 socket
3/6 4 socket (because it can't roll 5 or 6 sockets, it would instead get 4)
So, you have pretty good odds of getting 4, but if you're socketing an eth superior elite armor to make a merc's stone or something, I'd suggest against taking the chance and just use a socketing quest. Hope that helped.

You can't use (IIRC) the cube recipe on superior items anyway. Normal quality only.

Thank you both for the info - it's a normal Archon Plate in which I'd like to get 3 sockets, not 4 - so I'd better start hoarding the runes to socket/unsocket with the cube.

1 Ral Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Normal (Basic) Rare Armor = Exceptional Rare Armor
The item type is upgraded.
1 Ko Rune + 1 Pul Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Exceptional Rare Armor = Elite Rare Armor
The item type is upgraded.
Will this work with socketed armors (eg rune words) or will I loose the rune word?
(have a Enigma Light Plate (how dumb is that) and want to up it)
Those recipes are for rare armors and rare armors can't have runewords. Whatever is inserted in the sockets of rare armor will stay however when upgraded. Runeworded items cannot be upgraded.
