Building a New Char in Ladder?

Folks--

Much by accident I was looking to build a magic find sorc for USEast NL, and accidentally selected Ladder when creating the char. It wasn't until I hit lvl 15 after about 20 mins of tristram runes that I realized that I couldn't swap gear onto my new char from my mules -- NOOOO!!!

It's been so long since I played an untwinked character that I don't even know where to begin. Here are my thoughts on how I can build a formidably equipped (and moderately wealthy) character with no items to help build on:

1- Level Quickly (this will enable me to get to bosses that I will be able to run, although I won't have any mf).
2- Hunt for GC's (I prefer hell GC's to NM flayer) and endlessly try to roll skill charms for trade
3- Cube up those junk runes I find till I can get something halfway decent (I guess this is a bonus of ladder--you can cube up to like um or something?).

Anyone have any other ideas as to how to get rich quick? It looks like I'm gonna have to quest myself unless I can find a free rush, since my zon is NL...

First, you can cube all the way up to Zod as far as I know. I think after Um its 2 copies of the rune and the requisite gem instead of 3. But don't quote me on this--I just know you can cube up a lot higher than Um.

What sorta sorc you building? I can set you up with a Tal's Mask, I seem to find them like once a week and have 4 or 5 collecting dust. I probably can set you up with some decent lower-end stuff too off one of my mules, a buddy of mine played ladder with me into the 80s on a few chars and then up and quit D2 altogether, leaving me his account, so I have several characters full of low-mid uniques and assorted useful stuff.

I don't mind rushing you for free--I'd only ask that you look for me from time to time and play with me! :lol: I typically play alone, but am finding that its much more fun to play with people you know. Also, I have a barb that I'm trying to build around a Wolfhowl I got, and with no combat skills, Nightmare is getting tough, so perhaps after I rush your sorc and you manage to level her decently you can help me through NM. :flip:

I'll hopefully be around tonight, and am usually on in the evenings, though you may find better luck PMing me during the day or IMing me, as I just got a PS2 for my birthday and suspect I'll be dedicating some Diablo time to the new games. I also am having problems with my internet at home, so it might be a little later tonight before I'm able to figure out the probelm and get signed on.

You already started a sorc so i suggest going blizzard so you can do hell andy and meph runs. You dont neccessarily need any mf to find items. In the beginning though you can use ptopaz's into 3 sock helms, armors etc. Ive found some of the best elite items with little no mf. Iam on Useast ladder. If you need a rush just msg me or reply here when you will be on next.

Agreed--I can certainly set you up with a 3 ptopaz helmet and 4 ptopaz armor, and probably have some low nagels to start you off too. If you're really lucky, I'll have an extra goldwrap (can't remember if I have a spare or not) for ya! :thumbsup:

I'd even be happy to run Hell Andy and Meph with you--2 players probably get better drops anyway, and my necro has 450ish MF. Generally when I'm on and not doing something important, I'm just running Hell Andy/Meph with my necro anyway.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you boys-- you have all probably realized that virtually all explicit search functions have been removed from the forums, and due to the other daily database problems (related) I couldn't subscribe to the thread.

Cajun-- That would be cool, and as always appreciated. I'm not too proud to take hand me downs :)

Dace-- Back on UsEast already? I've found a third Shako for you if that IK helm isn't enough for you. How's the StormShield working on your barb?

Leesh-- Cool beans and much appreciated. I'll look all of you up when I get myself together. I don't think I used any of my skill/statpoints, but since I play alone alot I'll probably need to hit two skill trees so I can kill virtually anything-- I hate running from a fight (it's the paladin in me :) ) I don't know if I've ever seen anything fire and cold immune, but I'm looking into the build guides in the sorc section to see what might work for me.

There are plenty of cold/fire immunes.
I made a "Four Skills" for my first character.
Cold= Blizzard
Fire= Fireball
Lightning= Static
Physical= Merc

I can play all areas of the game but a bit slower than a 'one tree' sorc.

I received no help at all as it was early on in ladder.

Gear.
Helm = Peasent with a perfect topaz
Weap = Wizardspike (traded for a handful of P Gems)
Armor = Lower resist Vipermagi (actually found this but could have traded for p Gems) Socketed with Topaz
Shield = Rhyme
Glove = Magefist (easy to find or trade)
Belt = Tals (easier to find than goldwrap)
Boot = Some Rare with MF and some resists.
Amulet = crappy magic with + mana
Rings = Nagel and Level 14 fast cast rate with some small resist and 10 mf.
Charms = 6% mf...5%r/w large and other junk

This set up got me to Hell mephy and the rest is "history"

Now that I have someone who's on at least regularly more so than not, i'll have more reason to play on useast ladder and hopefully catch up on all the missed time on uswest. (not that it wasn't fun. :D @ Dredd & MV )
