Aren't Aldur and Cyradis both characters in the Begariad books by David Eddings?

I have read all of them you know. Not as good as Robert Jordan or George R R Martin, but enjoyable enough.

Aww come on Cy, Eddings is good, but far too predictable. Jordan and Martin weave so many twists into their plots that you end up reading the book on your head.

Oh, and Raymond Feist is better too :)

Just my opinion oc.

BLASPHEEEMER!!!!!

I started reading that Belgariad series when I was 15 - and joyfully anticipated each new book .... what other series can keep a person on pins and needles 12 years? (beside that wench JK Rowling and her laziness in doling out the next volumes of Harry Potter Goodness...) Plus - Althalus was not predictable... and the Tamul series was spiffy too >.<

Well, Robert Jordan has been writing the Wheel of Time books for 14 years and has only managed 10 of em. He now takes 2 - 2 1/2 years to write em. Having to wait for so long is damned excrutiating.

Edit: Oh and I have only read Eddings Belgariad and Malloreon series. Maybe I will have to give the Tamul and Althalus books a crack too eh?

OK kids, let's get one thing straight: If you cannot wrap your anothology story up in 10 BOOKS you're just milking a dead premises. I have read all of Jordan's stuff, and at this point, I refuse to buy another book of his. After this many books, the mainstay of the plot has become women standing around with their fists on their hips, "shooting icy glares" at anyone that annoys them. I was into the whole Aes Sedia plots, the Fallen, and even the Aeil, which were clearly stolen from the Dune series. But now the Seanchan storyline is just a rambling yarn that goes no where. Uggh. Now he goes and writes A PREQUEL? How about finishing the NOWQUEL? That fat, bearded gnome is gonna be pumping out this series until he's dead.

I've never read any of David Eddings' stuff, but I would do it only on the promise by someone I know that the series will actually, oh, I don't know, GO SOMEWHERE, and oh, say, END SOMETIME.

Having said that, I do need a good new series to read. Suggestions? Just started reading Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival, and man, it's really depressing me...

Aw come on. You can't dismiss the entire series just because the last 2 (maybe 3) books have been a *tad* longwinded. I was as disappointed as anyone with book 10, but it won't erase from my mind the gripping nature of the storyline that has gone before it.

Hopefully Jordan will manage to end it within the next 2 books. Then he can get on with the prequels :)

As for something else to read, I would definately recommend the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R R Martin. It is fantastically written and keeps you guessing as to what the hell is going to happen next.

Definately the best fantasy series I have read, and I have read alot. (Don't let Cy tell you Eddings is better, she is a tricksy woman that one).

Like I said, I'll give you that the first 3 or maybe even 4 WoT books were pretty good books, but after that, he kinda lost his focus.

Martin's Ice & Fire series I actually started a while back when on vacation with a friend (it was her book), but then, well, let's just say I didn't have access to her books anymore. 'nuff said. So I could actually break down and buy the books.

AS far as tricksy bunnies, I'd venture to guess that we don't know the half of it. :)

Tricksy?

>.< I am not tricksy .... and David Eddings is really very good ....

Bear in mind though the first few books are kind of like popcorn- tasty, crispy, quick and not much substance. The way he seems to do his series is to start them out at a very easy reading level and then ramp them up as he goes.

I can reread Pawn of Prophesy in like 2-3 hours max. Still fun though.

You should read them because you are a Nebby and Nebbies are very smart and will like such things :innocent:

They really are not profound, just fun. Plus ... democratic!!!

Well. With a ringing endorsement like that, how can I pass it up? Maybe that will be my holiday fluff reading (airports make me grumpy if I'm not amused. And when I'm in airports, I'm not amused. :| )

:D

It's not meant to be rocket science Chill. I did point out that it is nothing profound, just amusing.

When I have the time to read for pleasure I really like the literary equivilant of jelly beans- small, sweet and with pretty colors. I read grown up books on vacation, I just prefer the mindless sometimes.

I have even been known to read a romance novel or two!!! *gasps in horror* I especially like the reeeeeeally far fetched ones where there is magic and time travel and other nonsence. I do tend to get mad at the leading male though, they generally start out very agressive.

Good thing about my choice in books is that I can see the ending a mile away so if I don't ever actually finish more than 50 pages in a sleepy afternoon and never get back to them I have no curriosity about the ending.

(the Eddings books are not really like that though - they are popcorn not jellybeans)

Regarding the original thread topic:
Teddy Roosevelt, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, went on a bear hunting expidition (in Mississippi I think), but after several days his party bagged no bears. His hunting guides cornered a bear, and apparantly fearing it might get away before the President arrived, managed to injure it and tie it to a tree, and sent word for the Prez to come and shoot it. Upon arrival, Teddy was a bit disgusted at the lack of sportsmanship, and ordered the bear released. Media had a field day. Teddy's bear was born. If you have any interest in American History, the "Theodore Rex" is an outstanding biography of Teddy. I highly recommend it, along with "Founding Brothers" a wonderfully well written and researched look at the revolutionary era icons. If you think presidential elections and party politics are a bit dirty now...you aint seen nothin.

Concur with the Jordan series erosion, Wheel of Time is off its axle. Started off as a brilliant series and has degraded into extraordinarily redundant plodding. I think the last 3 books covered about 5 hours of world time. Those books have become like marriage: They don't last forever, it just feels that way.
Some other fantasy genre stuff I have enjoyed:
- Mists of Avalon and some of the sequals. Movie with Angelica Huston was pretty good too.
- Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Neverwhere captured me completely.

There are bears in Mississippi? Shut up! The only kind a bears in Ol’ Miss are the kind on cases of beer - if you can name that beer, you get a cookie! (And no, it ain’t no microbrewery).
