I stopped playing D2 about a year ago but now I'm back. I got rushed to act 5 and am now lvl 14. I remember I used to make games where people would lvl in act 5. Do people still do that now?

Rough Guide:

1-15: Tristram runs
16-20: Tomb runs
20-25: cow runs
25-26: Ancients
26-40: Baal runs

Then get into nightmare, do cows, ancients, baal, rinse, repeat.

Thanks,

Is there any particular reason people stopped lvling by killing Shenk and running back down to town?

well, simply that baalrunning gives more exp i suppose :uhhuh:
Still, while people teleport down to baal, i (and many others) tend to go kill shenk/eldrich for some extra exp, they still give you exp, and can drop funny things... just running bloody foothills isnt that exp/time-effective anymore compared to baal

The Ancients are a quest (quest 5 in act5) where you are up to kill 3 barbarians on a summit. When facing them, you can not leave the mountain, if you do, they will reset, and you will have to fight them from scratch again. Only by killing them all 3 without leaving the mountain (dying included) you will complete the quest.
When doing this, you will get a reward of some experience. This reward is well enough to give you a lvl up. (Normally it would give more than just one level, but it has been limited so 1 level is max)
This quest can only be done once. (or... you will only get the reward once. the barbarians themselves give 0 exp to kill  )

Yeah thats what I thought too. I remember playing the game and even though I killed the Ancients ALOT; I only go the massive experience once. Therefore The Ancients arn't a really good place to lvl seeing that once you've beaten them. Any other time you fight them you wont receive ANY experience. Sorry to butt in I just wanted to save people from making the same mistake I did.

I havenīt "levelled" since Classic. Back then, it was almost required if you wanted to take on Hell but now I find that you get enough XP full-clearing each area once (thatīs how I prefer to play).

Helpful numbers for what level a one-pass full clear gives (this is Single Player so I have complete control over number of simulated players and I get to kill every monster in the game):

/players 1 (or solo if on the realms):
End of Normal: level 37
End of Nightmare: 67
Start of act 5 Hell (havenīt finished on this setting yet): 82

/players 8:
End of Normal: level 49
End of Nightmare: 74
End of Hell (played on /p3 mostly, /p1 from Ancients and onwards): 87

This is a great chart to use while levelling yourself or your merc .. it shows in which level/act to get the most experience by character level ...
