View Full Version : Newbie question about the Oculus
So I found one of these today with my sorc, off a random unique boss while wearing no MF gear (that's probability for you)... Anyway, it's a really nice orb except for one thing - the 25% chance to teleport when struck. At best, this can be a confusing nuisance; at worst, it can be fatal. Are there any work-arounds for this, or solutions that people have found? Thanks in advance.
i got an eth one I use...
as for the teleport, it happens once in a while. I love it because the only time i get hit, is when my merc dies while we both are in a mobb.
it helps more than it hurts. As a sorc, you shouldn't be getting hit in the first place, if you are, you aren't being a very good sroc.
no srry
anyway sorcs arent technically supposed to get hit... it also helps a lot in duels against charge lock and other stuff
occy is the most common sorc orb b/c its cheap and it has resists, mf and +3(i think.. or is it +2?) to sorc skills
That's too bad, still a good item though. Oh, to all who said 'don't get hit', why don't you try fighting a mob of super-fast, cold immune, undead stygian dolls on hell difficulty and tell me how easy it is not to get hit. :)

Get a merc to block them and shoot them with something other than cold. Problem solved.

Shiver armor or one of the the other cold armors can help alot too.
the only way you could have gotten into that mobb, is if you did a bad tele into it. If you walking around, chances of you actually getting in that much trouble is rare. I'd say you need better cast rate if you having problems.
as for cold immunes... that's why we all use mercs for 1, second we all SHOULD have a second skill, or even a 3rd of a different ele.

The Occulus is a fine item - the only time the 25% chance to teleport can truly become a nuisance is if you happen to be a telebaaler. Especially if you are high-level (92+), a bad teleport can result in many runs worth of lost xp. If you telebaal, I'd advise switching to a different orb - at least until you reach the throne room.
Otherwise, for 'standard' play, don't worry about the "curse of the Occulus" too much. Doing your best to stay out of melee range will keep it from becoming a problem. Do watch out for those wretched archers though. ;)

Just wondering....
It seems to me that ranged attacks initiate the random teleport more than a non-ranged attack. Anyone agree or not with that?

That's only because hell archers and their ilk fire about 15,000 times per second. :p

Stupid hell archers... they are the bane of my DII existence >_<
:grrr:
i was doing a pit run once wit my light sorc w/ occy. and hell archers r the only light immunes in the pit. so i got hit once from one hell archer in a whole mob of fallens and dark stalkers... i instantly teleported into that mob and died.. thats my only annoying experience. but i play sc so i guess hc players might not want to use occy that much...

Maintaining a decent blocking rate is the viable work-around.
Ive got an Occy, and the 'nuisance' teleportig has saved me more often than it has harmed me. Have I ever had a bad tele off this feature? Sure. Has it ever saved my butt? ABSOLUTELY!
