I am making a WhirlWind Barb for funa dn was wondering what would be the best mastery to use? I was thinking polearm, but I would be best off with dual weapons or a shield/sword combo instead?

You generally want good range for a WW barb, so polearms indeed.

As for the optimal single weapon as far as hits and damage goes, a polearm would be the best choice. That's not what we usually suggest, however, since you lose out on the bonuses of a shield and in most situations where you don't use a shield, you'd be better off dual-wielding for the extra bonuses and 50% more hits per whirl.

As such, axes are the overall best choice, as the berserker axe is the most powerful one-hander around in terms of damage/speed ratios, requirements, range, and implementation (in that it can be used in all of the best runewords along with having the capability of being used in the blood recipe and a number of powerful uniques as compliment).

Keep in mind that if you plan to pvp, you're going to have to have a shield for melee.

Forgot to say but I only play PvM. Hmmmm... I think I will have to consider between Polearms and a shield/axe combo. Really depends on what kind of stuff I find as I play.

Shields can gather dust on your mules, if you are talking pvm ww.Go polearms-dualwielding is more expensive(finding two weapons) but offers some neat combo possibilities with the axe runewords of doom & beast.Polearms offer great damage & range-bonehew is a decent polearm thats quite affordable.

I am considering having a polearm as main and put my mastery there but keeping an Axe/Shield combo on swithc for wc echoing and if I need the extra defense (and perhaps MF).

You dont keep axe/shield combo on switch for wc prebuffing,+warcries dont come on shields, find 2 echoing weapons if you really need them(its not obligatory)besides if you need to do serious mf,find a tombreaver=>a kicka$$ polearm.

Maxing out shout=>high defense armor, high life,leech,damage-offense is your defense.
