I have the chance to purchase 1 of 2 griffons, -19/+11 or -17/+13. They work out to be the same if you add the negative & positive stats together, which seems to provide the same dmg, but i'm guessing that the -19/+11 would be better. The same way fathoms and nightwings have +% cold damage since cold mastery takes care of the -enemy res, am i on the right track? If anyone here wouldn't mind doing the maths to find out the exact differences i'd much appreciate it :worship:

Thanks

I would go for -19, why? Charms, items etc can boost your dmg but aside from griffon/lightfacets you cant lower res. Thefore the higher the lower res the better imo. A couple nice sc's can make up the difference in +dmg.

Thats a good point but i'd still like find out whether my thoughts on -enemy resists dealing more damage than +light dmg is true or not. I also noticed with full tals the orb gives -enemy resists to fire and light but +dmg to cold. I'd still prefer someone to back me up on this so i can be certain though.

-resists is the better way to go.

Look at it from this point of view.
Say the monster has 50% Lres and you do 100 Lit damage.
50 damage done.
-19% Lres
100*(1-(50%-19%)) = 69

From a +Ldam point of view, for you to get that same 69 damage, you'll need +38% Ldam from somewhere.

In the long run, -resists will be more beneficial than +dam.

So, your -19% tiara is the way to go.

Thanks for the explanation, but i don't get why you'd need +38 light dmg to equal the -19 res?

The average resist in hell is around 35%. Some monster have more resist , some less. But it's easy to show which (%skill dmg or -% resist) gives you more dmg in the long run.

let's say you do 1000 dmg normally. Then you equip something with 20% lightning skill dmg. The other time you equip something that gives you -20% lightning resist. And a monster has 35% resist.

1)
1000 * 0.65 * 1.2 = 780 dmg. (the 0.65 is because you do 35% less dmg from resist , the 1.2 is the 20% skill dmg)

2)
1000 * (0.65 + 20) = 850 dmg. (0.65 + 0.2 is because the resist of the monster is only 15% now).

As you can see , the -% resist works better here. The only time where 20% skill dmg and -20% resist are the same is when a monster has 0% resist. Besides that , -% resist is always better then %skill dmg.

The double %skill dmg vs half -%resist only applies for monsters with 50% resist. Here's an example to see why this is the case.

100 lightning dmg , 50% resist , -19% lightning resist.

100 * 0.5 = 50 dmg (this is after the 50% resist)
100 * (0.5 + 0.19) = 69 dmg (this is after resist + the -%resist)
Now to get the same 69 dmg without the use of -%resist.
69 = %skill dmg * 50
69 / 50 = %skill dmg
%skill dmg = 1.38

This means you need 38% skill dmg in order to get the same dmg as -19% resist.

ps.
For pvp this might be another story if your oponent has stacked resistance. That way your minor -%resist might not do anything at all.
