Most people make single element sorcs for a specific purpose, knowing full well that they will need to party up to get past certain aspects of the game. If you want verstatility, maybe you should try making a dual element sorc like a Meteorb. She still has lots of "fire"power, but she also has a decent cold attack. There's nothing she can't handle except for fire/cold immunes, but a well equipped merc can make short work of those (mine has no problem with Hell Lister).

My merc seems to enjoy running into large groups of monsters and dying horribly. He's going to cost me a fortune in gold to level I imagine, heheh.

Thanx everyone -- what i needed to know. while were talking about resistances, if you have 100% fire resist you dont take fire damage? if you have 120% is 20 returned or do you heal or what? y i know your resistances drop in nm and hell. thnx

For players, resistances are capped at 75%. You can raise that cap a bit to 95% by using items, but not further.

Some items give you absorb, which uses damage to heal you. Not much, and offhand I don't know whether that and 95% resist are sufficient to make you immune (I've never had a char with that kind of resists...).

Yes, you're immune, or close enough to it. With a fire resist of 83 and 15% absorb I can stand in the Act III Blood Lords' firewalls and meteors and lose like 1 life point every 2 seconds. There may be bigger fire damage somewhere that actually would affect me, but I've never noticed it...
