Hi. I was watching diablo trading forum and I saw some warnings about duped items etc, so i have a few questions.
Btw I'm playing 1.10.
What is considered as duped item? Item duplicated with ingame bug? Item duped with some hack program?
If I backup my character, and then start online game (tcp/ip or bnet), and give one item to somebody, then restore backup char, and still have this same item but other player also has it, is it considered a dupe, and will battlenet delete it?
How can I figure out if someone is not legit? Like, has all skills boosted to 99 with some lame cheating program or something? How do I recognize a dupe on bnet? Is there some special program to scan for cheaters or something? I know that for diablo1 someone created that kinda scanners.
Firstly, welcome to the Forums and enjoy your stay :)
A duped item is an item which is created/hacked (I spose) and used on battle.net. If you check out rpgtraders.net, I believe that there's a list of known duped items. The stats are a little screwy.
If you're going to create a backup character, I assume you mean offline. If so, you can't use that character for battle.net. All online characters are stored on Bliz's servers so there's no making backups etc.
I'm not sure what you mean by a non-legit person. If you're referring to a bot (automated gamer), then you can tell by certain obvious signs.. person doesn't respond etc. I'm just guessing, never having met one.
If you're referring to a person who uses a hack program like maphack, they would be able to see your inventory, they can see the entire layout of a map and have give-away statements like "I can see the exit.. follow me" even though they've just entered through the door.
Hope that helps :)

I didnt mean bots but chars who boost their skills with some hack program. For example: if I use kinda program to raise all of my skills to level 20, and all stat points to 500. I once had that kinda program, used it just to see how skills work at high levels. But I dont like them, game simply loses its cool. :)
I'm not sure if that's possible with battle.net since the characters are not stored on your HDD but on Bliz's servers. Then again, nothing is impossible with cunning technology. However, with offline games, I'm sure that there are character editing tools.
Just play on closed bnet, such hacks do not exist there. Other kind yes but hacks that allow changing your skills freely, backup chars or anything similar just do not work with the D2 and closed bnet architecture as all the char data is saved on server, not your own computer. D1 was totally different on that sense and so is open bnet with D2.
Duped item is anything that is artificially duplicated meaning copies are made of it. The details of how this is done are irrelevant.

Character files must enter your memory, and then they can probably be altered.

So...can I then put closed bnet char on my computer...which also means it cant go onto closed bnet again?
Of course but it doesn't matter since server won't accept altered data from your computer. The game is hosted on bnet servers, not your own PC/mac which is only client with limited capabilities.
I suppose some tool which might allow you to make a local copy of closed bnet char exists but there's really no point in that since such char could be just created and it can't be used on closed bnet.
