View Full Version : Decent Mephy NM run & questions

Just finished Act 3 (NM) on battle.net and had a decent Meph run. Aside from the standard rares & magic items, I also managed to plunder the following from the Durance:

1. 2 Amn Runes
2. 1 Sol Rune
3. 1 Dol Rune
4. Toothrow (Unique Exceptional Armor)
5. Sparkling Mail (Unique Normal Armor)
6. Aldur's Advance (Set Item)

Plus lots of other runes, gems, rares etc :) I thought it wasn't too bad considering that this is my first Mephy NM run on battle.net. I know it's nowhere near as fantastic as some of your finds but I'm quite pleased. I was so worried about the Realm Down problem when muling but it went okay in the end. Items have been passed on to my mules etc :)

Now, here are some questions:

1. I'm currently using a pair of Gore Riders. Would it be better to switch over to Aldur's Advance? The additional stamina and fire resistance in Aldur's is tempting. I'm guessing that Gore Riders is the better bet but I just wanted to know what you pros think.

2. Similarly, I'm currently using Guardian Angel and having found my second kick-butt exceptional armor (Toothrow), am contemplating the move. The defense is higher (about 80 more in the Toothrow). I'm still guessing that Guardian Angel is better but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

3. I also found a Grand Charm which had +1 to Druid Shapeshifting Skills. Is that a good find? If it is, what can I expect to get for that (in a trade, that is)?

Thanks for your feedback!

1) It depends on what class you're playing. I'd usually say Gore Riders is the best.

2) Ick. Toothrow is THIS close to being worthless. Guardian Angel is so much better

3) It's on the 2nd tier of GC's. Pally combat, Necro Summoning, Traps generally get high value (between UM and MAL), The shapeshifting MIGHT get you a PUL if you find a motivated buyer. Since it doesn't have a 2nd mod on it, I'd wait until you get another one and make it part of a deal (like 2 SS charms for UM)

The poor ladder people cry out! Ick on toothrow? I'd be thrilled to grab that! lol. Gore riders? OMG, that would be like godly to me! Oh well, in time I shall get up high enough to start finding stuff, but for now rare stuff excites me!

I'm currently a Level 58 Zealot so I think I'll stick to Guardian Angel. It's still nice to find a unique exceptional armor (my first exceptional find - found Silks of the Victor a few days ago). I'll probably also stick with Gore Riders for the moment.

The GC has a 2nd mod but it's lame (+5 to Life). I'll hold on to it and hopefully, find a buyer who'll take it with another druid-type item. Maybe Aldur's :) Thanks for your quick feedback!

That Toothrow armor is good, and will be superb if you 'up' it to a Kraken Shell. My lvl 76 Zealot has an upped Toothrow, and he's pretty much all set for equipment. I had Larzuk socket it, and I dropped in a Shimmering Jewel of Something or Other.

(1 Ko Rune + 1 Lem Rune + 1 Perfect Diamond + Exceptional Unique Armor = Elite Version of Armor)

Oddly enough, I've had Mephy drop a Toothrow on 2 of the last 3 runs...weird.

Keep running Mephy, if it didn't beat you down that much - NM Mephy is a great place to load up on good items to carry you into Hell Pit - Hell Pit is where you'll get stuff to get you to Hell Mephy, etc.

I didn't have problems running Mephy - aside from the stygian doll-types... the run was smooth. Didn't even have to gulp a pot when taking Mephy on cause life leech is lovely. I'll try running him again tomorrow and hopefully, pull out a couple more goodies.

nice rune drops for a NM meph run. Im never that lucky (getting 4 mid runes+2 uniques +1 set) im happy when i get half of that (4 of the forementioned objects)

id say keep the ss charm. If you like playing the Zealot, im sure youd like a fury druid + the druid can summon pets, especially the all important blob o' life.

edit: decided to answer another post here rather than new reply :)

When i run NM meph with my conc barb, i only ever have to use potions if i get hit by too many stygien dolls, or if meph focuses on my merc instead of me (i feed him one). However, i never seem to be able to leech off meph (never see the red or blue leech swirls) He is very benign for a melee character though.

I envy you people who get good mephy runs. I've not had good mephy runs since my assassin (whom sadly got deleted, due to inactivity) - my javazon seems to have an excessively hard time damaging the big booger. I need to run back to town at least once to buy more mana pots. Does meph have light res. i'm not aware of in nightmare?

Jyde, what realm you play on?

The best runs i've had recently are eldritch and pindle, occasionally clearing out abadon just further north of eldritch (to stop getting realm down'd) and maybe throw cows in for a laugh, or the countess (never know when she might drop something that isn't an el for me!)

IF I could increase my killing speed of meph, i'd kill him too. w00t.

Dace, mephs ranged attacks are worse than is melee attacks. thats probably why your javazon has trouble. My char (conc barb) and Jyde's (zealot) both are melee and clobber meph close where all he does is spew poison at us.

Yeah. I know that. I spend some time running away from ice-balls-o-death, but most of the time I end up standing near meph jabbing at him because i'm nearly out of mana from spamming LF. But even then, his life seems to crawl, very, very, slowly towards the death-side of his health bar.

I run through Pindle and Eldritch like they don't exist half the time. Obviously, Meph being a level boss, or whatever you wanna call him, act boss, i guess, should and is a lot tougher, but surely my zon should be able to kill him quicker than she does (She's currently lvl 73 btb.)

Dacerz, I'm on USWest and Elgar is right, because I play a Zealot, I only really need to fear Meph's melee attacks. I took Dodgydave's advice when I first used RPGForums which is to get up close and personal with Meph. Standing further away may pose problems because his ranged attack can be lethal.

Having said that, I read somewhere that if you can get Meph to follow you such that the lava/pit in the middle divides you, i.e. you're on one side and he's on the other, you can attack him using your ranged attack, say a bow etc. without much problems.

Presently, I hit for about 400-1000 points of damage and that takes Meph down pretty swiftly. I don't know how it'll fare against Diablo but I'm just pleased I'm at this stage thus far.

I used to have an account on USWest, I wonder if its still active (doubtful, lol.) - I think i'm doing somewhere in the region of 380-800 dmg to Meph, and 1-1200 or some such lightning damage. Say i'm even hitting him at least half the time, I should be taking him down almost as quick as you, yet his health seems to (albiet gradually) slowly go down. Annoying. Especially for him to then drop all magical items, bah.

I was going to type more, but .. a conversation I just had on MSN killed my mood. So i'm ending my post here.

Firstly, I hope you're feeling better. Don't let life get you down.... ain't worth it.

Secondly, I'm wondering why you're facing trouble with him. With that sorta damage, you shouldn't have a problem at all. I've got life leech of about 11% (if it stacks, that is). Perhaps that's why I'm facing less of a problem? I dunno... being a newbie and all.

Finished 5 Meph runs and what a change it was!! Completely rubbish drops today. Mephy's becoming a pain!!

Drops:
1. Rusthandle, Goreshovel
2. Tir Rune
3. Tancred's Weird
4. Tir Rune, Dol Rune
5. -zip worth mentioning-

*sigh* You know, even though I'm a little disappointed, I'm still eager to try and run him again. It's the craze - knowing that I may just get lucky... may not this time but next time... you never know ;)

It confuses me as well, thats why I was thinking "does he have lightning res. i'm not aware of?" but even so, i'm still doing a lot of physical damage. Maybe Meph just doesn't like me. Maybe I'll fix my barb and go WW him to death once again! ... maybe.

Hehe.

-Dace; feeling better-

Edit: My uswest account is still there, but alas, I have no characters. Sigh, time to start over. No point having a wasted account. I'll make a sorc I think. Seeing as my UsEast account is full.

You ladder or non-ladder Jyde? I'd enjoy doing some runs with you (once I get there, of course. Maybe my luck'll improve. :D ) Hehe.

I'm probably on more than I should be, hehe. But i've only got this and my computing course (its a breeze, finished a 18 week course in 3 weeks, psh.) i'll definetly give you a msg. I need the help! Lol.

I detest starting over.

Grumble.

Cool Dace... I'll look you up when I'm next online. Need any help in the game? Where are you and what char are you playing?

On a different note, had time for a few Meph runs today. Not too bad... I got The General's Tan Do Li Go (boooo!!!!!), but I did manage to get Trang-Oul's Claws, a Lum and a Shael too.. aside from the bunch of gems and low-level runes etc :) I'm not happy but I'm not too upset either :)

I just need some help lvl'ing and questing. I'm still in A1 with a level...*jumps back to D2 to check momentarily* level 14 sorc (aspiring meteorb sorc, to be exact) who just picked up her first unique a few minutes ago (woot) - the gnasher, unique hand axe. Oh, and cleglaw's shield. RaWr. Lol.

Congrats on the finds. I've never found anything higher than hel/dol runes, as far as runes go. Even from the countess (over on east, the monsters on the way to the countess dropped higher runes than she did. Lol.)

Have now moved to running Baal in NM. Not the easiest but I'm getting through. I think Lister's the worst before Baal.

Anyhow, it's not been a good day... only managed to get Demon's Limb. Rest of stuff was mostly nonsense. Sheesshh.. what does it take to get kick-butt stuff? :)

it takes: No social life, no job, no courses of any kind, living with your parents, having a stockpile of at least 3 weeks worth of pepsi, and a 5 day weekend. Oh, and good MF and running all listed MF area's AQAP (figure it out) untill your eyes bleed themselves out of your skull, and losing small parts of your sanity everytime you pick up a "coif of glory" or a "the gnasher" O_o; One day... One day!!!

I unfortunately have a social life, so I must thus deduct 2 days (today and early tomorrow) from my 5 day weekend, but oh well. Maybe i'll find something, maybe I won't.

Or I could try lvling my USWest meteorb sorc. -cough-

A WHOLE LOT of Pit and Mephy runs in Hell! You need to run NM Mephy enough to hold up in the Pit in Hell (not hard, but there will be a handfull of unique monsters there). The Pit is where you want to hang out when you reach the early stages of Hell - you'll gain good exp while you clear the Pit, so keep running is until you are happy with your equipment. Then finish off Act I & proceed (you can then alternate Pit and Andy runs to keep the boredome at bay.

Most of my endgame equipment (thus far) comes from the exp/MF pit runs I did with my first character. The best treasure there drops from the unique monsters, not from the gold chest on the 2nd level. Wipe that sucker clean!
