View Full Version : What Keeps me from making cows?

I have heard so many different accounts as to how this works that I am posting to see if I can get a general consensus on what the real deal is:
Killing King is a trigger to the game to disallow you from making any more games for that difficulty (actually, the difficulty of the cow game itself).
What is safe and what is not?
If someone partied with you kills king
If you are unpartied but still in the cow level when someone kills king?
If you are ever hit by king and/or his lightning, whether partied or not with the person(s) who kill king
If you are partied with someone who has killed king for that difficulty already
Can someone confirm what is and what isn't? I always try to play it safe and just tell people not to kill king at all, but you know you knuckleheads don't listen
Think of killing the cow king as a quest.
1) If you are in the moo moo farm when someone kills the king for the first time, you lose the ability to make the portal.
2) It doesn't matter if you're partied or not, but it won't affect you if you're in town.
3) If you've already killed the king with your current character in that difficulty, you can continue to kill him in other games without affecting other players.
[QUOTE=ShytStorm]-
If someone partied with you kills king if they have killed him before, your fine
If you are unpartied but still in the cow level when someone kills king? your fine
If you are ever hit by king and/or his lightning, whether partied or not with the person(s) who kill kingyour ok
If you are partied with someone who has killed king for that difficulty alreadyno problem there, and they can kill him, and youll be fine also (first question)

hmmmmm,
Ok I usually open the cow with my char that hasnt killed him b4 then leave the game.
I then send my other account chars in who havent killed baal yet.
When those chars eventually kill baal will they too be able to open the cow game?
Cheers in advance

spoofer, in 1.09, unpartying didn't help you. If you were in the moo moo farm when a first-timer hit the king, you lost the portal.

Yes if they meet the requirements GenXCub mentioned in his post.
My Necro was my first char on ladder 2 to finish Hell, and I rushed to make a game of Hell Cows. Alas, his minions encountered the Cow King and killed him before I barely noticed (yup, a Level 8x Necro with 14 Skellies, 5 Mages, a Golem, an equal-level Merc, and Atract/Amp Damage/Decreify *is* that bada$$). So I went ahead and finished Hell with my Sorc....now she makes the Hell Cow games, clears out everything but the King (Blizzard + Chain Lightning is downright shameful, it is so fast and deadly), and then my ole "outlaw Necro", now retired to mule duty, comes in and slays the King, getting some nice items usually, without endangering my Sorc's abilityto make another cow game. Works for me :)

I am puzzled by how you guys actually create cow games, and reenter with different chars without finding the games full because someone else saw your game and filled the last slot.... I'd do the same with using a creator char and then a cowing char, but I can never get back into my games after making.

Interesting point -- About the 2 cd keys. This doesn't mean that you can run two instances of D2x on the same box, right? I read somewhere on the now gone diabloworld.net that there is a way to obtain a set of dll's that allow you to run multiple instances of d2X on the same box. I will create a separate post on that to see if nebody knows about how to do that...

Um, hope I don't sound like a smart-aleck here, but if you put a password on the game when you create it, no one else can get in :thanks:

No new/patched DLLs (that's always bad, as it conflicts with the patches that come via battlenet). Instead, you just need a new loader program --- that way you don't touch the original game, so it can be patched with no problems.
There are tons of such programs around; I always use the stuff from gamecopyworld. For most games it's just the nocd fixes, but for diablo the loader takes care of the multiple-instance problem as well.
Since I have two slightly different versions (one original, one german that I've "mostly" patched back to english --- the german keys don't work with an original version) I have two different installation directories; so no need for the CD-key reloading feature.

no charlie-- not a smart a$$, but think about why several people do cows in the first place. XP is greater in larger groups, and the drop qty's are greater. Unless I do have an 8 way multi cd key hack, I'll be running cows by myself when my small list of buddies are offline, which kinda blows...
