..inside my DVD-writer drive too..

How did this even happen, I do not know. All I know is that it was working fine last night, oh and it was my Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne Disc..

It was working fine, I played a couple games with Capoeira, then I got off, and I left the cd there for 2-3 hours while I went to watch the Hockey Game. Then I turned it off for the night at around 12:00.

Next morning, I have it on at 11:30, and I wanted to catch a quick game of DotA, but heres the thing. After clicking on my desktop icon, nothign happened. I tried tapping on the button to eject the disc but it stalled, not responding even. So I was thinking that the power was off or something but at least take the disc out. Then it got freaky, the drive started screeching, scratching and rumbling, so I immediately turn off the power for it.

The drive, if you shake it sounds like a salt shaker.. (http://www3.sympatico.ca/aricw/CIMG1633.JPG)
My lonely case, where are you my drive?? (http://www3.sympatico.ca/aricw/CIMG1635.JPG)
Yes! Warranty still not voided!!! It's not a year yet! w00t! secksie!! :D (http://www3.sympatico.ca/aricw/Untitled-1.gif)

I conclude that the disc has shattered for no reason, as it self destruct because school starts in 2 days, and I can not procrastinate..

Has anyone else have their disc explode? Inside the driver of course, not the microwave :)

Damn you disc!!!

Hasn't happened to me, but I've heard of it.
Generally it's from a small crack in the CD being combined with not spinning exactly right, or something to that extent.

I actually recall a post about it somewhere (can't recall where exactly, maybe this forum, maybe somewhere else) where a D2 disc went POP, and to do the disc replacement for it that Blizzard offers he had to collect all the many shattered pieces and send them in the mail to them, and he did get a new CD from it.

What happens is that Blizzard uses really CHEAP disks for their games, in order to save money. Now, you have a fast Cd/DvD drive.. I assume. So, here's the thing. The cheap CD is weak. You're drive is fast.
You're drive spun the disk SO fast that the Cd shattered.
It's pretty amazing how low blizzard will go to save money.
This is the explanation that was given in the thread that Mouse_Wiz refered to. It was on this site BTW.

Yup. I've had it happen to me as well. You can imagine how fast that thing's spinning, any disturbance and it'll blow up quick.

There was an issue a while back with Blockbuster iirc with the labels they put on their discs. Weighed out one side more than the other and 'pop'.

Ugh...

Send $10 to blizz to get a new disc..

I may just borrow the disc from a friend, make a .iso from it and use that..

Because i dont think i can retrieve the pieces which are jammed into the drive, and i can't open it..

Never play with disc inside coz Blizz makes them from very cheap non-elastic disc so they break like hell!! I got 2 copies of Diablo broken and then I installed Deamon tools and ripped Diablo disc in Clone CD. I dont care if its legal or not - I am not going to change every broken disc every month I play. Rip Diablo game in CloneCD, use Deamon Tools (or any other virtual disc software) and play safely without putting disc in CDRom ever. Except instalation....

You can open the drive by introducing a small piece of metal (a clip, for example) into an orifice that should be below the moving part (wich opens and closes). You don't need to get all the parts, just most of them, so that they can be sure you won't be sending half the parts for one CD and the other half for another. It shouldn't be too hard to get most of them.

The same happened to my LOD cd as well. Never had any problems with other cd's.

Ya that happened to me, except my disk exploded while I was playing. It was working fine, no funny sounds or anything, then BOOM! No more Cd and no more Cd drive :hanky:
