View Full Version : Estimating Distance....?

Hi All,
I was wondering if there's an easy way to estimate distance?
In particular, I'm planning how many points to put in CE for my necro. I'd like to have a good idea what sort of radius I'm going to be affecting.
Is there a set distance from my characters feet to the edge of the screen? (and is this dependant on resolution?). This would make guess-work easier.
Cheers,

With a 800x600 resolution, the visible part is 16.7 yards wide and 23 yards high (it's higher than it's wide because you are not viewing at a 90° angle).

This is an old but very well written study about distance and AoE. You can use it as a model to determin anything you need to know about distances in Diablo.
Hope it helps

It'll be quite useful.....

It should be possible to calculate it by making a screenshot of an effect with a known area size and which has an enduring visible effect. A druid's tornado comes to my mind, but Arreat Summit doesn't specify its radius. Another possibility would be a pally's redemption aura in an area with lots of dead monsters.

Or, better, Conviction in a PvP game. Visible, fixed and known radius, easy to spot when is active/gone. Just walk insteed of run so you can be more precise.
(Conviction is listed as 13.3 yards radius.)

Hi there!
I am from the barb forums,I am working on a huge ww guide,currently carrying out some tests of my own to ascertain whirl speed,I am sure now, that whirl speed is affected by frw% items.I also,believe there is an error in the final run speed formula posted on strategy compendium.It must be added by 1.
FinalRunSpeed = BaseRunSpeed+BaseWalkSpeed *(skillFRW/100 +[itemsFRW*150/(itemFRW+150)]/100 + armourRed/100)
I blieve it is:
FinalRunSpeed = BaseRunSpeed+BaseWalkSpeed *(1+skillFRW/100 +[itemsFRW*150/(itemFRW+150)]/100 + armourRed/100)
Since while I carried out the tests,the run speed I got by using the good ol distance/time formula was higher by just 1 yards per sec.
Here is how I ascertained distance by using the final walk formula posted on compendium.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/796626/pedest.gif
there is just one frame(the above one) where the statue pedestal alligns exactly with the top right corner of the screen,so reposition ur barb accordingly.
The distance from the barbs current position to the pedestal is approximately
13.44 yards. I calculated that by several timetrails in walkmode & using a good ol casio stopwatch :lol: .I ascertained distance by multiplying speed (from compendium formula) by the avg time of about 10 trials.
not 100% accurate,but thats the best I can do & it served my purpose since when I whirl to that point wearing gores & goblins, I notice a time difference of .60 seconds avg.
Hope that helps.
Can anyone point me to whirl speed threads of the past here if any?
Rik
