Welp - Frances is now predicted to hit poor lil Florida just 2 weeks after Charley came through. I figured I should post this now as I will prolly not be on after tomorrow - for a few days at least. (I will of course still slack off at work all day tomorrow as my company sucks and isn't giving us the day to board up the houses and drive out of state)

My friend and I will be staying with her sister in a more stucturally secure - and less tree surrounded house, prolly driving there on Friday.

I don't know if all you Northrunners have seen this beast but she looks mean ... and huge so wish us SunshineStatians luck as we will need it.

Take a peek if you are currious news sites are covering it, local Orlando news is wftv.com

*huggles you all* :surprise:

( I will be around and spamming full force tomorrow so expect more griping about the weather and lack of cookies in the stores )

Phew, good luck with that. We New Englanders don't have to worry about hurricanes too often, although we do tend to get bombarded with Nor' Easters in the winter months (November - April).

Given the choice, I think I'd rather take the Nor' Easter, simply cuz snow is much funner than rain. :surprise:

Stay safe and good luck!

Will look forward to it!! I guess cookie consumption goes up when everyone's stuck inside with nothing to do. At least they don't jack up the prices with the high demand. Wouldn't that be a Crime!! I'm sure riots would ensue, hurricane or not people would march the streets in protest!!

If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
Except that the heat may be a largish chunk of the reason you don't want to leave.

Oh well, still makes more sense than moving to the middle of Tornado Alley.

ROFL!!!

That is what Charley did to me!! I was packing while the eye was passing over me - loaded up the Truck the following morning and drove around downed branches and trees and such.

This board is cursed! It's all your fault we are having a Hurricane! Anytime one of the HC Floridians moves we all get a hurricane!

OK ... twice may be a coincidence but if it happens again I am alerting the media!!!

On the topic of cookie stockpiling:
Stopped at the store on the way home last night and there was nearly a fight over bottled water till they brought more out of the back room ... the thing that really broke my heart though was the 1/2 empty cookie shelves!!!!!

 Greedy bastids!!! I only got 6 boxes!

Hang in there. You get some rough times during Hurricane season, but once you get past that it's smooth sailing. Just think of us up here in Wisconsin in April when the highs are in the 40s.

Florida is a blast most of the time, last hurricane I didn't even lose power - I just feel for the poor SOB's in Kissimmee, some of them only just got power up this week. And now they could lose it again.

O.O I just heard from a friend that some counties have stopped selling alcohol!!! HOW COULD THEY???????? How can you have a hurricane sober?

Work is letting us leave at 1pm today so I am at least not griping at that :D

You know what's really going to be bad are the places around the debris dump sites. There are mountains of wood debris at these sites and it's going to be really bad when the wind gets ahold of them.

I went to the store this morning for some OJ, took one look at the mayhem and just turned around. It was almost worst then Christmas shoppers shopping on Dec. 24th. I heard this morning too from a friend that a really bad fight broke out at one of the local home depot type stores. Apparently the store wasn't giving ply wood to people that didnt have a special type of cart, because the ply wood can easily slide off of normal shopping carts and injure somebody and they didnt want to be liable. So you can just imagine the hell those employees are getting having to say no to folks who are trying to do something at the last minute.

Cy is there any openings at your job??? We are stuck here till 5. And they still havnt said anything about being off tomorrow. I'm just going to call in. All schools are cancelled anyways and well well.....looks like the sitter is unavailable so I must stay home with my daughter.

Ok I think i've rambled enough. Cy and anybody else here in Orlando and the surrounding areas, I wish you all the best and stay safe. Oh dont forget to fill up your gas tanks, I dont want to see any of ya'll on the news fighting in front of the pumps again!!!!

Hurricanes have too many factors to be truely predictable. With this one its could hit winds of 156 mph or less could hit southern Florida or South Carolina. Just be glad it didnt. Ive been through enough to know i have seen enough. Good luck to all our posters in its path

Good luck FL kids. Why don'tcha all come on out to peaceful SoCal till the season's over? Of course, you'd have to deal with our Governator (Heil Arnold!) and his crazy tax scheme...but I digress.

Current track has it passing literally right over my house. Fortunately for me that will be after it's 24 hr walk across the state (I'm north of Clearwater on Florida's West coast). By then it will probably either be a cat 1 hurricane or even a tropical storm. Still, we have to prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Good luck. My brother is in Fort Pierce and will more than likely catch the full effect. 12 miles inland. Luckily his house was built post-Andrew and has a good storm shelter; bad part, he just bought it.. 2 weeks ago.

Frances has been weakening so I am not as freaked out as I was when they were predicting a catagory 5 slamming into the coast and then beating us with 120 mile winds for 18 hours passing right over my area.

They are now saying Catagory 2 when it hits and then a 1 or possibly even a tropical storm by the time it hits Lake County. Phew! :D

Now the only question is .... what the hell am I going to do with 6 boxes of poptarts?

LOL that would be cute!

Well, little update on Cyness as I know you have all been waiting desperately to hear from me :surprise:

Frances sucked more than she blew - long drawn out and boring for my area. Loads of people got it alot worse than I did so I am grateful ... I am still gonna gripe though.

2 and a half days with no computer - locked in a small (small but very pretty and not kidproofed) house with 5 adults, 4 pets, 3 kids, 2 cases of beer and a teenager in a pear tree.

The kids were fine - till they got bored like 30 minutes into the pre hurricane squalls, the pets were mostly out of site but their hair wasn't. One of the cats was EVIL!!! SPAWN OF SATAN AND TUBCAT!!!! It would hiss and attack you if you were within 10 feet of it ... even after it wandered over to you to put you in that 10 foot warzone.

One of the dogs was a 7 month Doberman - Pretty dog, very friendly .... PSYCHOTICLY FRIENDLY!!! I have bruises and scratches all over from attempts at doggy kisses and luvvings. She would just leap at me in a twisting, wriggling, wet nosed, clawing frenzy of joy. Her need to lick my face could only be rivaled by her need to dig her long pointy claws into any exposed skin in order to leave lovely red scratches surrounded by purple bruises. I look like a refugee from "Sam's Bondage and Sadism Discount Outlet"

The other cat and dog were both sweet, gentle little lovebugs ... as in climbing into my lap for pettings and purrings and leaving me covered in fur... massive quantities of fur. I could knit a spare pet out of the fur they left on me and my bedding. (the kitty slept with me which was cute until she would wriggle her way up onto the pillow in the middle of the night and try to suffocate me by shoving her purring neck against my nose and mouth ... while I was sleeping)

The adults were fine - the teenager was a riot - he knows almost all the lyrics to just about any song I named - and he would dance to them as he sang ... :worship: He had us all rolling laughing! He also was my excuse to get out of the house a few times - he wanted to try holding a sheet while on his skateboard out in the storm ... I figured why the hell not? I now have tape to send in to Jacka$$ !!!

We lost power last night so it was hot and miserable and icky but when we gat home the power was on so YAY!!! Only thing is th storms have driven every ant in the state of Florida into my room. :cheesy: I have sprayed and sprayed but they are everywhere ... I think they are organizing an attack ...someone needs to alert the governme

we lost power here but only becouse they shut it off like 6 hours before the hur hur hit us lost power for only about 30 hours only thing we got was alot of rain..... alot of "strong" winds (not hur winds just like 50-60 mph ish (pure guesssing)
the whole nabor hoad was out in it running from house to house (and then the beer run) then house to house again till we all went to bed for the nite.... lol woke up to find a few more tree's down and a tree that was cracked 1/2 way up (we figured the last band was going to take down a power line (right after they got power back on)

id just like to note........ every and i mean every block around us had power but our's!!! lol but we didnt get hit hard and im thankfull for that

got that right. living with earthquakes is fun until a really big one hits. All my friends out here who were in the bay area in 87 still say that's no kinda fun. The thing about the earthquakes is that they're not as common as hurricanes/tropical storms, but when a bad one hits, ALL the utilities go out, for a while (gas, plumbing, electric). Guess it's apples n' oranges. Or maybe its winegrapes n oranges. whatever.

besides, FL is where all the cool people would be if some of 'em weren't in Cali...

were not leaving for this 1 it looks like (as zappa said it should be done for the most part when it hits us)heh, actually you're closer to Clearwater than I am. I'm in Hudson, but I'm about as far north in Pasco county as you can get, just west of US 19 (the dividing line for how insurance companies decide who they're going to totally screw on home owners insurance). I'm about a mile from the coast as the crow flies, but I'm actually 26 feet above sea level so almost no flood threat.

The center of the storm passed right over Port Richey, and with me being about 10 miles to the north we were also in the "eye" as it were at the time, 11 PM Sunday.

We also lost power for about 30 hrs or so. Pretty early on Sunday, about 10 AM or so, it mysteriously just shut off. There wasn't even a lot of wind yet at that point, mainly just steady rain all day. Everybody is really suspicious that the power company simply shut it off pre-emptively. As good luck would have it, the last kid in the house had just finished taking a shower - orders given in the event that we did lose power. At least everybody was freshly showered.

My house was a hurricane refugee camp. My grandson (11 yrs) & myself played host to my girlfriend, her two boys (8 & 11), her mother, and my daughter and her boyfriend. Got along fine cooking stuff on my gas grill (just filled on Friday), and had cold beer throughout the power outtage thanks to a stock of ice in my garage freezer. We played a LOT of pool since that was about the only non-electronic entertainment anybody was interested in (we tried monopoly and some others but always fell back to shooting pool). We had a big ham on the grill Monday when the power finally did come back on and we simply finished it on the grill. That was quite good actually.

It was kind of odd how everybody seemingly everywhere lost power, but at my girlfriend's house (a double wide tornado death trap), she never lost power. Still, as long as there was any threat of tornado's being spawned, they stayed at my house, which was until end of the day Tuesday.

There was a lot of minor damage all over the place, but nothing real serious. Worse thing I saw was one mobile home with it's roof partially blown off. Across the street my neighbor lost half a big tree. Fortunately it was the side facing the street :)

For the long weekend, we totalled 15" of rain! Had to dump my rain gauge three times.

Now we're keeping our eye on Ivan. He's supposed to be right around a cat 5 when he hits cuba

You're kidding right? Because that's too funny to be true.

We don't really get extreme weather down here in New Zealand which I should be thankful for. I did live in Hong Kong for a couple of years and we got the occasional Typhoon which i'm assuming is like a mini hurricane or something??
