upgrading Gaze

Hmz.

I feel screwed for an UM

I traded UM for PUL PUL
I just traded a Gaze 7/7/20 defense 252 for PUL
I traded PUL for LEM, FAL, KO, LUM LUM
I asked a friend to rush me for socketing the Gaze and found P diamond
I upgraded the Gaze with LEM, KO, P diamond

AND NOW MY DEFENSE IS 230!

All I have is FAL LUM LUM and a Gaze with DECREASED DEFENSE!!!

Did I do something wrong?! I did this with Lidless and Shaft and they both increased in defense. Shaft got 60% more defense, from 670 to 1500. Lidless from 300 to 340.. But Gaze from 252 to 230!!

Is that an ETH Gaze? That would explain it, since the ETH gets not calculated when you upgrade. It just calcultes bit no-eth defense.

Nope. Its a normal standard Gaze with the ordinary 252 defense. What should I do now? Whine and trade it for a normal gaze and never upgrade again?

It went from a Grim helm (I believe) to a Bone Visage...

Did I degrade it somehow? Strange because the requirements went from lvl 45 I believe to 70 it is now.

It needed like 45 strength, it needs 106 now.. With only 230 defense!!

I know where the problem is.

252 is the perfect defense on the Gaze.
When you upgrade the Gaze to a Bone visage item type, the base defense can range between 100-157, add +100% defense to that and you can get out a defense that is lower than the 252 you had on the none-upgraded gaze.

Why this is unlikely to happen with other items: The additional +xxx% defense is usually higher than just 100 and the ranges of base defense can be closer togther. I'd say you were really unlucky at upgrading that gaze :(

Probably all you can do is rant and get rid of it, or use it til you get some better gaze. Trying to sell it would not be nice...

Bone Visage 100-157 defense and Gaze gives 100% ED. So it is 115 now thats possible.

Grim Helm 60-125 defense so even if it was 125 def with 100% ED then it only was 250. And it was 252? Odd...

Uhm, I might be wrong, but could it be that it was 251 defense? Iirc, uniques get base defense+1. Oh yeah, upping Gaze is the worst choice you can make, it has the highest chance of having lower defense then the normal gaze. Shaft, skulders, GA even, have a much better chance at getting good defense.

Knowing those base defs and knowing you had a 252 def Gaze, you should have known better than to upgrade it. You burned those runes and all that time when all you'd stand to gain is 55 def... at best.

A non-ethereal Vampire Gaze ALWAYS gets a defense of 252, no matter what. The minute you upgrade that sucker, you are rolling the dice. This has been "known" since 1.10 first came out. You should always check what the new stats of an item will be before you upgrade it. I don't know how many times I've given out this link...

I dont find that unusual at all. Vampire Gaze is a typical Merc Helmet you might want to upgrade to improve Merc Defense. You might want to ask at Statistics forum, but its not like the topic is totally "Sorceress Forum OT".

Uniques get base defense+1 multiplied by %enhanced defense. Therefore 125+1 and 100%ed = 252. I figured that out myself, I hope I'm not wrong :D
