prolly a very stupid question. but what exactly is damage reduction? because I thought it was for all damage and stuff, and just found out that a gaze, stormshield, shaftstop and good belt give together up to 100% damage reduction. So I am probably wrong somewhere. How does this work?

%PDR is capped at 50%. Of course the damage reduction from Gaze, SS and the likes is physical damage alone and won't reduce magical/elemental damage.

if its only physical is it then worth it to wear dmg red. items?

DR is a good thing for your merc. But unless you are a melee sorc, its a waste.
My merc has upped gaze, upped shaft and a eth dbl amned bonehew.

When I build sorcs I shoot for Tal sets and + skill items.

My meteorb uses full tals set(helm and armor both socketed with ptopaz)+SS(yes I have it for block & DR when I tele), and I keep a Shako (socketed with ptopaz), Skulders (socketed with ptopaz), and Occy(socketed but waiting to find or trade for an IST) in stash for those times when i want more MF.

funny. my merc uses a normal gaze (waiting to be upgraded) upgraded shaftstop with UM and ethreal double amned bonehew too. I just need to upgrade the gaze and to socket it. I have a 34% ED jewel and having doubts if it might be enough.

Wearing full tals with 2 topaz, Perf nagel, SOJ, upgraded lidless with diamond, frostburn.
