View Full Version : I'm a Golem Noob
Despite having just finished Hell with my FishyMancer, I find that I know very little about golems. I have been using the Iron Golem exclusively, but recently have read good things about his Clay brother (he's the one referred to as Gumby, right?).
Can someone point me to a "Golem guide" or a thread which will help cure me of my "Golem noobity"?
Thanks in advance....Charlie Acord
P.S. Is "noobity" a word, or did I just create it?

I don't KNOW of such a guide.
I don't know this Fishymancer thing everyone seems to refer to, but many people (including me) prefer Gumby: he's cheap/he can be placed whereever you want him (doesn't need an item to cast), and he slows monsters. My Gumby (lvl 1 +skills) has more than 5300 life, and I cast him right in front of the pindleskin group when I enter the building --- and he usually survives the whole fight, even if pindleskin is fanatism or might enchanted.
Bloodgolem: I've never heard anyone advocating the use of BG
Iron golem: some people seem to like him. I don't know why, better ask them. But you've used it, so there must be something useful about it :-)
Fire golem: some people seem to like him, presumably for the "attract" effect that his aura has. I don't have a skillpoint there, so I don't know.

You are a genius! Noobity is NOW a new word!
But there really isn't a golem guide, in general, the post above is basically all you need to know about golems at this time.
There was once an Iron Golem faq but unfortunately it was lost when the forum hiccuped.
The order of the golem...Clay>Fire>Iron. Clay just pwns, Iron would be better then fire if you have good items, but he's just too costly to mantain, and fire goes POWWWWWWWW!

'Noobity knows the trouble I've seen.... Noobity knows, my sorrow... '
At anyrate, as mentioned before, Gumby is cheap, can be recasted at any time, and slows... for these reasons people like him vs. groups since he is a great tank and people like him vs. bosses since Clay + Decrep = Boss crawls.
On the IG side if you create him out of a pally shield, or ancient's pledge you can create an elemental immuned IG. Other, effective options are low lvl rune words like: Malice (for PMH, Open wounds, and - Target defense), or Strength (for Crushing Blow), etc... Lastly, crafted hit power items are funny for low lvl frost novas which will slow baddies as well.
Blood Golems were useful in the old days in which they'd leech off of Iron Maiden. Doesn't so much work anymore so he just mainly gets you killed. But... hey... you can still spam the town with BG and make a pumpkin patch :)
Fire golems are great vs. fire enchanted monsters. They are effectively invulnerable since golems don't have the caps as Hirelings or Player Characters do. In the old days there were Boomer necros who'd cast the Fire golem by a player or a baddie and the explosion of the Fire golem would kill for them. Supposedly it was half fire and half physical damage with a small radius. Another old application was not to get Summon Resist and the golem would get full benefit from it's fire absorb so if he got hit by Diablo's fire he'd actually heal instead of take damage. Lastly the fire golem was popular for awhile since Lower Resist used to lower magic resistance so it would send the BoneSpirit damage through the roof. They'd use the Fire Golem since his damage would also benefit from the LR curse.
It seems like with every patch the programmers switch the Uber summons. It started with the BG, then Revives, Fire golem, Iron golem, and now Skellie warriors and Gumby... by my book in a few patches they'll make everything suck but Skellie mages

Summons got massively forked in 1.10.
It used to be that their hipoints scaled ... now you need to put in twice as many skill points to get the same effect.
The reason Gumby is good, is because he's the only big-*** tank left.
Revives got stupid, Skeletons are fragile and had their numbers massively reduced etc.
By upping the offense of the Skeletons, that then makes all the golems look bad. Golems used to have the offensive role... now they don't shine in that category, so the thing you look for is defense... and the Clay Golem is a cheap brick.
It took a long, long time to figure that out. Its not like 1.10 came out and everyone said 'OMG - I must make madzor monkey sexxor with teh hunky gumby!!11!!'.
Everyone was like 'yay! Skellies can do damage in Hell*' and focusing on Skellimancers, or trying to figure out the best Bone Synergies, or trying to figure out if the Marrowalks bug was legit..
*Yeah, okay, so they do three times as much damage now... but wait... there's only one third of them that there were before, their HP are down... and you have to spend a lot more skill points on them... right.... go Bliz!
I like Iron Golem just cause its funny watching noobs responced when you drop like The Grandfather on the floor, and they run at it, only to be met my my golem.
I also just ask Mala (spelling?) what she has. You can get those throwing knifes that do like +250% damage for only like 5000 gold. Thats very cheap, and they only take up two spots in the inventory screen.
I think that people use the Clay Golem is for the slow, and also the bug that gives him like 10,000 life. That makes him a nice tank.

Hm... how do you use this bug? My golem has "only" >5K life...
In any case, you forgot one very important aspect: I can cast him whereever I want him. Gumby is my ONLY minion that I can just put where I want him, which makes it an even better tank --- what good is tank if he's running somewhere behind my skellies?
This is even more important as I don't have any "direct damage" spells. My firewalls are not strong enough to kill anything while it is moving, so Gumby is very useful to stop any monsters approaching me, until my army takes care of them or my firewalls do their thing.
Well, I got the bug by just maxing Clay Golem, and in an 8 player Baal run, it would like 9000 life. I also saw somewhere here on the forums the bug. I will see if I can find it again.
I do see your point. I play a pure summoner. I don't really even need a golem, i just like the Iron Golem cause I like finding normal unique items. They make sweet golems. So does IK Maul. I made my friend leave the game when I made that a golem.
He was a barb, with almost the complete set
Ok, I found where I read that stuff about the Glay Golem. I hope that this clears up anything that I said wrong in the post before.
Here is the link. (http://www.rpgforums.net/showpost.php?p=1286211&postcount=5)
It says that it can get higher than what I got it up to. Alot of people I don't think will max it, but I was bored one weekend, and used it in my Boner build.
