Alright folks, delicate situation.
I'm attempting to install windows XP on my other computer. Currently windows 98 makes me cry and thusly, it's gone.
So basically wipe the drive (c:format) then I assume I just throw in the cd for windows and it'll give me some sort of guide...walkthru and what not. Anything else I need to be aware of?
Yes, we need a technical help forum so I can whine elsewhere, but any help is appreciated.
I'm attempting to set up a lan as well. Since I dispise 98, I'm getting rid of it. Anything else I should really know about? I'm using that inverted cable so I don't technically need a HUB, I think..
So much to do. So much to do.
Just run the disk and it will do the rest. Make sure u have around a couple of gig free HD space for it to install. The hardware check alone should tell u if there anything wrong during setup.
Note all data stored in Win Xp is NTFS and not FAT32 so make sure remember this if u trying to run data or files back to win 98.
Good Luck

XP can use either. :uhhuh:
But it for some reason is better you go with NTFS. (So I was told).

OH! And file compression, too.
Not true.

True u can choose at the start, but would u would ureally want to use a older file allocation table rather than a newer, updated, more stable version. ?

NTFS is nice, but DOS hates NTFS. No matter how much you like Windows, once in a blue moon you will encounter a situation when DOS is needed. I always keep at least 1 partition in FAT32. So far, it has proven to be extremely handy.

Unfortunately I have yet more problems. Installing it. It asks me for a key (which I assumed was for XP) and it didnt work....AFter more and more time I tried a whole lot more cd keys....
I'm beginning to think it's asking me for a windows 98 cdkey...which I have no idea where to get legit seeing as the book the computer came with is long gone (my buddy's computer) and I dont know how to proceed at the moment.
Suggestions? Currently the idea of fragging the entire thing and starting with a fresh drive....
What is the difference between FAT32 and NFTS?

That because it is DOS for FAT32 and not for ntfs as it own command line. If u had any problems u should change the boot sequence to the CD-ROM and then run it off your windows disk.
From a professional level i wouldn't recommend making a fat32 partition on the same disk as NTFS, as techically it shouldn't make a difference however from our support calls the general trend seems to be, users who keep the whole HD with the same type of partition tends to have a lot less problems than users who don't.

I reitterate : I hate windows.
hate. hate . hate.
Doesn't accept my cdkeys (the 50 or so I've tried) so I figure that yes, it's a 98 key needed. I look for a 98 key...I put in 15 or so of those. Nothing.
Simply hitting C: format and nuking the thing...what do I do then.
Doesn't a CD key come when you buy it...

Can u not get hold of another CD key as if u have problems validating the serial u may need to contact MS for another. There not a problem with copy of XP u have right? Let me rephrase that all legit serials should come with legit copies of XP. If u know what i mean

No, the cd is from my "computer guy" who generally takes care of this stuff. I Figured "60 bucks for installing windows?! Eat me"....So I have his cd and a key he gave me.
Thats about it.

If he's the one you have the key from, contact him. Tell him the key you gave him doesn't work.
Btw, to my knowledge you don't need a windows 98 cd-key for windows xp. It wouldn't really make much sense. I don't recall being asked for it when I installed xp on a clean disk.

It could be the problem with serial then, i would make sure u get a valid key from the guy as there no other option espeically since SP2 is out now that scans for the type of thing.

There's a what out that does what?!
Translation: Is there something I should worry about, if I'm using someone else's cd-key, but have already installed xp?

NTFS has access controls (though I don't think anything actually ever uses them, because most Windows programs demand read/write access to everything anyways) and supports larger file sizes/partitions than FAT32. NTFS is also less compatible/supported if you ever need to recover data from that partition, or access it from another OS (including other versions of Windows).

SP2 - Service Pack 2. Like all Service packs for XP there a built in stinger system that checks the serial. Therefore if illegal serial keys are used, you will soon find out. This was in service pack 1, MS have stated that it going to be the same on the new service pack, SP2.

I still have a copy of the original Blue Keygen. I used it to generate a few serials. The one I'm using worked with SP1, but I'm holding off on SP2 due to compatibility concerns.

I'm holding off on Microsoft concerns, not a great track record with major 'fixes'. I shall wait until I hear some good reviews.

What is the difference between FAT32 and NFTS?Here's (http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=63) a pretty short comparison.
