View Full Version : OT: Holy **** watch out?

I guess in some parts of mid south east these are kinda common but I've been noticing the reports more and more, and seen a few here (oregon) just want to tell anyone who doesn't know about it to watch out.
They are called the Brown Recluse spider.
The pictures are kinda graphic so if you don't like huge nasty gaping holes don't look.
Here is some general information on them, as well as how to identify them (It's not to hard, they are just plain larger than most of the spiders were I am from and they have other things too)
http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol5num2/special/recluse.html
If your too lazy to read that they have a violen shape on the top part of their body and their head. They also have 6 eyes (aranged in 3 groups of 2) instead of 8.
Picture: http://www.critterridders.com/brown_recluse1.jpg
This is the kind that I've seen here in oregon.
On almost all the sites it says they only bite if they are cornered. By cornered I mean they were like in your shoe and you put it on. In a peice of clothing. You rolled into them during your sleep.
They hunt during the night and remain in dark places during the day.
Ok now onto the nasty stuff (bites)
http://www.brownreclusespider.net/BitePhotos.htm
http://www.brownreclusespider.net/BitePhotos2.php
When treated correctly they can give you vaccines that will help the bites A LOT. But since there are different types (13 I think) It said you should try to capture the spider so you can be properly diagnosed. The different spiders can effect different people in different ways. You can get anything from a little bite and a blister to some of the stuff in those pictures.
Ok thats it I got my *** bit by one too bad he got splattered before I could capture him before I could be properly diagnosed, I'm gonna catch one to take to the doctor if my bite starts to blister at all.
Oh yeah and poison sprays are not a very effective way to stop them because they are dirty bastards and don't clean themselves as much as normal spiders, however we used a flea bomb (ment to kill spiders as well) and we found dead ones so that works.

Nasty.. but nothing to do with pvp, there's a community forum for this kind of stuff t-t (not to mention the fact that this doesn't even apply to most of us~)

That was what the OT was for. They're all throughout the US. I'm sure enough of you live in the us for it to apply to enough. Dunno about other countrys.

This spider is exactly why im arachnophobic. I was bit by one when I was about 3 or 4 years old. I dont remember it but my parents said they rushed me to the hospitals emergency room. I have a tiny tiny scar from it too...and I mean tiny! We took care of it right away so it didnt get out of hand like those pictures.
Im 24 now and when I see even a common house spider, I get someone else to kill it....its sad but thats how it is

Actually no there's alot of people here that aren't from the USA so generally they don't care about this.. OT threads about d2 could go here.. but this is nothing to do with d2, thus belongs in the COMMUNITY forum -.-

OT stuff can go in any forum and its nice for a bit of chit chat, ever been to the drood forum, almost none of the OT there is relevant to droods but they are the kings od spam and OT!
Anyway, I am totally arachnophobic too! And this isn't really helping too much! Stupid spiders, I see one and I gotta get my younger brother to kill them! :grrr:

it's my understanding they don't occur in the NW US at all
anyway, where in oregon do you live?

For once I support Vampire, many times others regulars make OT about baseball or Football (NFL) which are of low interest for people from other countries but USA, and its ok with it.
P.S. This is not completely OT, since a Venom or Rabies bite prolly look like that in real life.
I live in tennessee and we have quite a few of those. A guy I use to live with rolled over on one and got bit on his leg. He had a nasty looking bite that turned dark like a bruise, but then never got better and kept growing. He went to the doctor after a couple of days and they diagnosed it as a recluse bite, and instead of it being a bruise, his muscle had actually died and shriveled up. They had to amputate part of his leg (not cut it off, but kind of cut into it, so now he has this weird indention on his calf). It really freaked a lot of us out, and we're a lot more careful. Soon after this, in one of our classes the teacher told us that the previous class said they thought they had seen a brown recluse scurrying around, and there were about four of us that spent the first 10 minutes of class looking for him, and then we killed him. I'm not afraid of spiders, but I certainly do not like them, and rarely will I let a spider continue to live once found.

I guess thats bad, but I lived in Zambia and South Africa before UK, and thats the reason for why I am so sh*t scared of spiders, we saw spiders that were huge in my garden! Freaked the living crap out of me! And the one time there was one in my room, my dad killed it with a cricket bat but I refused to sleep in my room for two nights (it was a big *** spider!)!!!

I usually let the spiders live... mostly because im not scared of the smaller ones but i leave the bigger ones because i'd hate to think of what would happen if one of those big ones bit me so i just stay away from them O_O

They arnt common in NW, I live in portland. But we definatly are getting more, I had never seen one until like 3-4 weeks ago. Yeah um I don't reccomend smashing these bastards they splatter, all but the one I caught (haha ****er starved to death in a jar you like that *****) I've been putting down the toilet because yeah splatter is gross.
Also do any of you know the effect it would have on a cat (more like a kitten 3-5 lbs) if they got bit... Our stupid kittens keep trying to attack them. One of our big cats killed one but didn't get bit at all.
*Runs* Holy **** those are freaky, this is why I bust out the windex to kill the fast/big *** ones.

Yes I'm scared to sleep, it's either the couch (they can climb onto easy) or my bed which is the box thingy with a matress on it no frame no legs. Poison sprays arnt supposed to work because they don't clean themselves much. Could you imagine waking up with one of these ****s on your face...
Jeez, I actually could imagine that. Then I'd wake up again and scream, then hide under my pillows >.<. Then wake up again w/ it actually on my face, and I'd throw it into the fan and watch is become a sliced and diced menace.

I live in East TN, what part do you live in? I've known about the brown recluse for quite a few years now, and see these spiders ALL the time, mostly in my basement. I have not yet been bit by one, but I find the funnest way of killing them is luring them onto a hard open area and then dropping something extremely hard and heavy ontop of them. Preferably concrete and a large flat faced hammer.
It is my understanding they can live in just about any medium climate. I know I've seen a few in Washington. They like the woodpiles for some reason. I haven't seen any in my house but the closest was one next to the door handle of my storage shed.
They are kind of common in Washington( west at least) so we learn about them in school(don't touch the spiders that can make you die a horrible death kids). I would think Oregon had a lot as well but I guess not.

there are some less-dangerous brown recluse look-a-likes that do occur in oregon and washington, and there is also a very poisonous spider called a hobo who's bite is almost as bad as brown recluse and can cause similar effects - both of which are factors that have lead to the myth of brown recluses being wide-spread in the NW. but brown recluse range is restricted to the lower mid-west and southwest US, and they do not normally occur at all in the far western US (unless transported).
research it if you don't believe me
I live in souther CA, quite a few of them here. My brother live in San Francisco and was bit a couple years ago. After seeing what it did to his foot, I run from them now.

You'll have to sheal the vacume cleaner or it won't hit the BP. No but really I don't like sucking up bugs ever since we sucked up a nasty earwig it went INTO THE BAG then the next day we changed it and it came out alive!
Where did you think it would go when you sucked it up?
That would be a nasty surprise though.

not just outside the usa, my friend. I am from right near St. Louis (big football/baseball center) and topics like that make me want to snooze. but, yeah, I have been bitten by a brown recluse. It kinda sucks, lol. Luckily for me, I have one heckuvan immune system. Pretty much recovered from it with little more than the itchy bite.

Why do you think we're talking about killing them using diablo2~ish methods?
I would like to ask the audience.
Yea...I've had a few bad experiences with those brown recluses. When I went to basic training in Fort Sill, OK, they were all over the place. With us sleeping outside and doing different exercises outside alot, we saw alot. One of the guys in my platoon had 3 different bites on his legs. He had necrosis (dead flesh) all over his leg.
The worst time was when a few of them decided to hitch a ride back to our barracks in our rucksacks. Only after 5 people got bit did we figure out that they were in the barracks. We found 3 of them after we moved all the beds and lockers.
Very nasty bastards!
