Greetings all,
I'm new to this forum, so if this post is in the wrong place please accept my apologies. I expect some ribbing about this post, but I'm putting it here for one reason. I think that I've seen either a new game bug or hack at work that spells trouble for closed realm gamers. Again, if this isn't new or the post is in the wrong place please forgive me and move it to the correct forum area.
Yes, I'm aware (now anyways) that an Annihilus trade is a scam 100% of the time. I attempted to trade an Annihilus on USEast Diablo II LoD servers for an Upped Skullders (a friend of mine really needed one). I was in game with a Paladin character by the name of "Schickler". This Schickler left the game and I messaged him to come back. Although he got the message, the message on my screen read that he was "muted". I had not seen this character before during that session nor had I squelched him. After having been shown the item for trade, we went to the wall by Akara's portion of the Rogue Camp to each drop the item to be traded. The Paladin had NO AURA about him, so I felt that if he did run around the wall I would have time to pick up the Annihilus in time.
Now the really upsetting part. That I lost the Annihilus is my fault and I accept that. The Paladin DID NOT run around the wall to grab the Annihilus, HE TELEPORTED. Yes you read right, the Paladin teleported IN TOWN. He was on one side of the wall one second, then on mine without running with my Annihilus and OUT of game in less than three seconds. I have attempted five consecutive times to re-create the same circumstances with friends who have the Annihilus charm, and as a sorceress I cannot teleport.
This bodes dire for the ENTIRE closed realm trading community folks. If in fact what I saw was an "in town teleport" in a closed realm, there's a real problem for ALL of us. Please keep your eyes open for similar happenings, I'd like to see this verified so that Diabloii.net can warn players of a possibly new closed realm hack.
Thank you for your time.
Keep the Faith,

Sounds like your thief was wearing the all too common "Enigma" Runeword armor. I'm pretty sure that wearing enigma gives players the ability to teleport and even teleport directly into town in most instances. So I am very doubtfully that someone used a hack to accomplish such a scheme. Players however cannot use teleport while in town. So if the palladin you described teleported from outside the rogue camp into the rougue camp, then you were scammed. If the palladin was inside the rogue camp and teleported anywhere, then this might be a bug or hack of some kind. Anyways I hope you're a little more cautious now because of your experience. I know I'll be more cautious as well.

Thank you for your post. The Paladin was in camp, he was within the gates and was clearly visible on screen. I cannot verify whether or not he was wearing Enigma Runeword armor.

I'm not sure but I think that pickit works by teleporting next to an item and grabbing it. I'm not sure whether this works in town or not.
Other than that maybe lag, or indeed, maybe a new hack that is going around.
Doesn't really bother me anyway as I never do anni trades and I never will apart from on these forums.

Like I said Warlock, I learned a hard lesson. I'll level slower because of the loss. Teleport in town though is what I believe happened. It really worries me.
im pretty darn sure tele doesnt work in town so it might a hack.
It's a hack. It happened in a game I was in. We were both in town standing on opposite sides of the wagon that sometimes spawns near Gheed. We both dropped, I started running and he teleported over and grabbed the item I dropped. I still manage to pick up the anii he dropped, but he teleported none the less.
It's just an in town teleport hack, and there's not much you can do about it. Don't ever trade with someone in and town and outside of town because then you don't need a hack, but for what we saw it's a hack.
The exact same thing happend to me, exactly where you were standing Storm, he had a Anni, and wanted to trade my Lo rune for it, of course I said no, so he agreed to trade a Mal for it. Now I jumped at this, cause I never had a Anni before. So he went to the wall (the same said as the potion lady...I forget her name) and I went to the opposite side. Now, the second I dropped my Mal, he just teleported and grabbed it
And I know that he wasn't wearing Enigma (unless the level has been dropped to 1  ) so your not the only one this has happend to Storm (It happend to me on Europe Ladder btw)

It's a newish hack that's doing the rounds.
People have found a way to edit the .mpq files to allow them to telelport in town, then using a script can tele and use pickit at the touch of a button.
It sucks.

Thank you all for posting here and confirming what I saw. I hope that the moderators of the forum are reading this and can begin to do some investigation towards a solid confirmation of what we've seen. My intent here was to warn folks of a new closed realm hack, and it's obvious that I'm not the only one this has happened to. I feel much more justified in posting now, although the Annihilus loss still stings.
BTW, has anyone written the diablo bug/hack team about this issue? I know I haven't, and confirmation on a letter to them about this new closed realm hack would be great news.

In thinking about this over the past 24 hours, another REALLY IMPORTANT clue has come to mind (I have the members of the NGRU Gaming Clan to thank for this one).
I do not recall either HEARING the teleport sound byte, or SEEING the teleport graphic. Something deeper is at work here I feel. I will be the first to admit that game code and the packets of information that fly on wire back and forth between server and client are beyond my realm of understanding. But it was pointed out by a LONG TIME Diablo gamer and a great NGRU clanner that editing the .mpq files could cause file corruption. Perhaps this "hack" has more to do with packet editing than file editing? Usually when this type of ability comes to light, someone ALWAYS leaks the information in the form of a "new" hack being advertised for download. I plan on doing some websearching today to see what I can dig up.
Again, thank you all for the constructive posts. Those of you who have seen this or have experienced it, please help me confirm what we've seen. Also, if you could try to remember whether or not you saw or heard the teleport graphic/sound byte would be appreciated.

Wow, for a newcommer, you type extremely well and politly, welcome to the forums. I have recently heard about pickit being now town enabled, and that I have heard that its packet sending that makes the character " teleport " , which is the same as I have heard about pindle bots, which use scripts to move through town. Perhaps a hack that makes the char move to a certain grid point and pick up any items there set to a push of a button?
Just wait until they can attack in town @_@

Blacknight, I appreciate the compliment. Thank you much. This is one of the few QUALITY forums that I've seen that is "game-centric" (to coin a phrase) that hasn't descended into flaming, heckling and the like. When I find a forum of this nature, that so willingly accepts considerate newcomers I make it a point to present myself and represent the Clan NGRU Gamers Association -- Worlds for the Taking™ as brightly as possible.
The "hearsay" you spoke of is most likely on the right track. If it were the .mpq files being changed (and this isn't my knowledge, it's the knowledge shared with me by a fellow clanner and programmer) the file checksums would be fried and the game most likely wouldn't start. Granted this may not be written in stone, but it makes good sense. I did some websearching today (around three hours of it to be exact) and found nothing for download or which explains "how to" where this possibly new hack is concerned. That doesn't mean though, that a website that offers afore mentioned information does not exist.
Deceit, I've heard about folks being attacked on open realm servers in town in any act, but not in the closed realms. I hope that this doesn't start.
Again all, thank you for the replies to this string and the help that's been offered to me by those who've seen the same.

So... you were in town next to Akara and he was outside of town on the other side of the wall next to Akara?
