so now that im getting closer to the age of 18, i am more seriously contemplating getting a tattoo, which i have wanted for quite a while.
how many of yall have tattoos? how old were you when you got them? what are they? how did you ask your parents about it?
also if there are parents reading this, how would you react if your 17/18 year old asked to get a tattoo?
im thinking of getting either the dragon Jormungandr, or a phoenix( with the wings going around) around one of my wrists.
if you do not think my placement is a good idea, please say so, and then say why.
also, feel free to add whatever you would like. ( keep the hi jacking to a minimum please)

I have two tattoos. Both on my bum. Various reasons for that placement. I got mine when I was eighteen. I didn't tell my parents but my sister ratted me out one time and they weren't impressed, given that they are super conservative and all. My cousin got a tattoo on his wrist and said it hurt like a bugger. I personally think that if a guy is going to get a tat he should get it on his arm, back or shoulder blade. Those are the sexiest.
OMG PICX! What kinda tattoos? Damn lucky ankahah.

well, my "guns" arent that large, meaning that if i got it on my arm that it would be kind of....i dunno...not right. pain doesnt really bother me that much, not saying that im all hardcore i <3 pain or anything, its just that i expect getting this done will involve pain, so i better not be let down :)

There are certain placements that hurt more than others. Fleshy areas hurt less than places near the bone. Although my *** was hurtin pretty bad during both times. It was actually pretty funny because the place where I went didn't have a bed to lie on so I was bent over a chair the whole time with my pants half pulled down and with six or seven people standing around me. What can I say? I liked the attention. I got a butterfly and a vine of flowers. The guy I was dating at the time told me I should have gotten a crossword or a story done so he would have something to read. He was gone after that comment. Anahkaha no word searches either!

I'm planning to get a tattoo on the back of my neck.
Tell me what you guys think (some of you may recognize it), and it's going to be a bit larger.

It's actually going to be on the muscle between the shoulder and the neck, on the back side of it. Does anyone know if that's a painful place?
I also wanna get a tat of an eye that kinda looks likethis (http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/3708/Sharingan.jpg) on my eyelids. That will hurt like hell though, but it would be mad kewl.
How about an "Insert Brain Here" on my forehead?

Unless you plan on being a rebel biker the rest of your life keep your tattoos to places easily concealed in an office atmosphere. People in HR don't hire people with visible tattoos.
Men: Upper Arm (above the short sleeve line), Shoulder Blades.
Women: Small of back (damned sexay) and shoulder blades, and of course as Isolde there pointed out. The booty.
Remember a tatoo is forever so choose wisely.

Oooooh! Body mods! I'm good with this stuff, although I have very few personally. I let others tweak their bods, but I love this stuff. So I've got a more or less good knowledge of the stuff. :yep:
Alright, you say you want it on your wrist, right? I'd say be careful with that, perhaps. Your wrist isn't what one might call a very fleshy body part, and, as Isolde pointed out earlier, the more flesh the better. There's a lot of exposed bone and, if you really want the wings to wrap around, keep in mind that there are tendons not too far from the surface and there's a lot of veins too. I have a friend that had a huge celtic cross put there, stretching from elbow to palm, basically, on the inside of his arm. Didn't hurt much more than a shoulderblade, but was a bit more annoying. Have to be more careful with it, I think.
If you're only turning 18 soon, I'd personally tell you to wait a few years before getting one. You're not yet done growing necessarily, and a tattoo would just warp as you grow. Same thing applies to why it might not be the best idea for Anakahaer to get one. Just think when all that brawn starts to sag and fall into disuse... A soaring eagle might turn into something more akin to, say, a weeping willow as the years came to pass. And tattoos will fade with time. They won't always be as vibrant as they originally were, so it's another thing to consider.
I'd say the bicep or shoulderblade would probably be the best spot for your first tattoo, but that's ultimately up to you. The first few weeks of having your tattoo will be the most important ones for how it will look in the longterm. You can't expose your tattoo to the sun for about a week, and getting a sunburn is highly unadvised as it will lead to premature fading and peeling of the tatoo. Peeling is the worst, since it'll take out the upper layers of skin before the ink has enough time to properly sink in deep enough and will fade it really fast. You'll need to continuously apply something like polysporin to the tattoo, to keep it humid and prevent infection. However, at the same time, you'll have to allow it to breathe as much as possible. Meaning, whenever you can, opt to not wear a shirt, without exposing the tat to excessive amounts of sun.
That's all I've got for now, anything else (meaning if you've got something more specific to ask), PM me or post it here, and I'll do my best to answer you to the best of my knowledge.
Personally, the only tattoo I might get myself one day will be a black rose on a bicep, with a coil of barbed wire coming from it, snaking up to my shoulderblade. Job to be done over a few different times, depending on much coil I put into it... But that won't be for a few more years, at least. I still have to get more holes put in my head! :teeth: :yep:
Unchosen:
Holy flying mother of god, man. That is some nice work. Specially the coiled snakes. Does that symbol/loop/thing cross over to the front of your chest? And, dear god man, tell me you didn't have that all done in one sitting... Cuz, just filling that in... Musta taken a good halfday, even though there isn't a lot of detail on the loops, the amount of ink that musta been needed... But the snakes look wicked as all hell. Nice work on them, once again.

I got a front piece but it's alot smaller...
They are snakes that coil around the arm and back...they're all snakes actually.
I did both pieces seperately but all in one sitting.
The center piece (Contrasting snakes) took 5 hours but I had about 30 or some mins spent cooling off and grabbing a cigerette, toilet, etc etc. The solid black piece (upper back. arms, neck) was done in one sitting, took 7-8 hours.
Colouring isn't that bad, they use more needles so it feels more like a rubbing. Outline is ALOT more painful cause they use less needles.
If you want less pain, try and go for LESS complicated drawings that require alot of outline done...it really makes no serious difference because after a while it stops hurting cause endorphins in your body start to kick in.

Well mine's right up there î
Only have the one for now, it was originally going to be two paws next to eachother, but now I don't know whether I'll get the next one done or not. I like it a lot, the only thing that bothers me now is that it's in such a place I have to wear pants/skirts ridiculously low for it too show, so it's concealed most of the time. :/ I am thus planning to get another one, but have been having a hard time to decide on motive, so I'll hold it until I find one that's just right.

I'd really rethink getting your first tattoo on a highly visible, hard to conceal location. It can be quite hard to adjust to the attention a person receives when visibly tattooed. This will, of course, vary by your community, but even if you're in a fairly open minded city, you'll get more attention (both positive and negative) than you think.
My advice as a moderatly tattooed person would be to either 1) get a fake or henna "tattoo" on the location for a few days and expose yourself to the resulting brouhaha, or 2) get a tattoo in a place more readily concealed, like a bicep, calf or shoulder. These can be preferentially exposed when out with friends and the like, but are easily covered when with grandparents, judges, or other people that might give you a negative reaction.

tatoos on the bicep and small of back is all the rave here in the states. I would personally get one somewhere else, so I would be different. I want alot, a european dragon fighting a asian dragon, a angel and a fallen angel, and a bald eagle on the attack. but I will wait until i finish growing and I have a job after collage.
tatoos are about 80 bucks for 4x4 inches of skin.
you can get them removed, but its about the same price as getting them.
I have 2 tats, one on the bicep and one on the back of the shoulder, both lions. The one on the arm didn't really hurt, the one on the shoulder blade did for a bit. The area goes numb for most people after a few minutes, and it really only feels like a bee sting anyway, though around a wrist or ankle would feel a lot worse I would think.
I would agree to get em where they can be reasonably covered. I got mine when I was in college, and now I'm very glad I put em where I did.
Mine have been sunburned over the years since I got em, and are now faded and need redone, something I'm gonna do here soon before moving on to more. My wife has one also, just above her bum, very sexy. :)

I have 5 and got them all between 18-20 while in the military ... bicept, back/shoulderblade, left chest, and one on either side of my right calf. Let me tell you ... the shoulderblade hurt the worst because it isn't very fleshy.
And as was mentioned earlier ... think long and hard about what tattoo you are going to get and where you are going to get it.
Mine are easily concealed with a short-sleeve shirt and pants ... but at 33 years old now, taking my 2 kids to the pool/beach can draw alot of eyes when you are covered in various black bats. Not that I regret them ... because I like tattoos/body art. I just think I would have preferred something other than bats.
Think to yourself ... when you take your kids or GRANDKIDS to the beach some day, how are you then going to feel about your tattoos?
Unless, of course, you have $4000 to have it removed
And last bit of advice ... DO NOT TATTOO THE NAME OF ANY BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND ON YOUR BODY!!!
My wife of 6 years is awful embarassed that she has a rose with "Aaron" on her leg that she got at 17 ... and my name is Eric
Very cool tats Unchosen, wish i had a digital camera to post mine.
For the thread creator,
Tats only seem to hurt for the first little bit..I actually fell asleep while I had a dragon done between my shoulder blades.
I'm currently trying to decide on # 4. But I advise finding something original and personal. I would think seeing your tat on someone else would kind of take the shine off of it :grrr:

i have been debating about a tat for some time now... i really like the ones my dad has (he has 1 on each bicep, both of them eagle type ones). they are a bit more intracate(sp?) but i love one he has. how much would it cost to get a basic one of an eagle sitton on a branch with a sunset behind it? a rough estimate will do...

Fallen, you'd have to go to the tattoo parlor, as rates vary substantially from shop to shop and artist to artist. Any reasonably professional artist would be more than happy to talk to you about design, size, etc.

Another thing to think about is look at all the kids getting absurd stuff like barbed wire around their arm. Cool now, but what about in 20 years? Or 50 years when they get old? Just what you want, to go into a nursing home to go see Grandma Rainbow who has a tattoo of a demon on her now sagging and flabby arm.
My old man ran a tattoo parolor on the side in the mid 80's before AIDS made it too dangerous. He told me that if you choose a career that involves being or working in close relation to a white collar professional - keep the tattoo in a place you can conceal easily.
Uppper arm or shoulder is the best of for men. Same for women, but they also get the shoulder blade and small of back. Nobody in their right mind has on their face or genitals.
As a professional, I'll never hire or willingly deal professionally with anybody with shock value tattoos, anything on their neck, or fad tattoos. And neither will any other white collar worker I know.

If it is something that you feel you would like, by all means get one. I want to get another one, but my white trash fincances won't permit me to right now. I just got my kids a bunch of stuff and we are going on a short vacation in 2 weeks.
The only thing I would advise is to think of what profession you are going into. If you are going to work in a professional field (non-white trash) I would get it somewhere that can be hidden. Even though it is not something to be ashamed of, employers can look unkindly on them depending on your profession. Sadly, people are judged by how they look and not what they have to offer. One can have a Master's degree and tats and not get the job. That is sad to me, but thats the way employment works.
From what you've posted about your homelife Zodiac, I'd say you fit the white trash bill quite nicely.

I have an earring in the cartilage in my ear. I went to an interview and they asked me if I would remove it. At the time, I wanted another job but was not in dire need of one since I had an OK paying one already, and I told them "no". I didn't get the job. One thing I hear constantly is "Tattoos are gonna look like crap when you are 80." Or, you are gonna regret getting that."...
Okay.
You are gonna look like crap when you are 80 ANYWAY. May as well decorate your body while it's looking good. It's not gonna make much a difference if you have tattoos or not, you'll be more concerned with being able to take a dump on your own, rather than what your tats you got 60 years previous are gonna look like.
With that peice of mindless drivel dispenced with....
Tattoos are habit forming. If you get one there is a 99.99% chance you will get another.
A few things. Tattoos are painful. No matter where you get them. It's a rite of passage. Depending on the size of the tattoo, and the hours put into it, the endorphins released by your body are going to produce a high that will block out most of the pain. When that happens, it downright "spiritual'. It's a very carnal experience.
Colors fade over time, and many people don't know that to keep a tattoo looking good you have to maintain it. This means getting touch-ups every two years to keep colors and lines sharp. It also means keeping them out of the sun. Sunlight causes the colors to fade, and it also increases your risk of skin cancer. Put sunblock on your tattoos.
One thing is to think out your tattoos. I mean REALLY think them out. Don't EVER get the name of a lover tattooed into your body. The only names that should grace your body is "Mom" or "Dad".
If you ever get a tattoo and something doesn't come out quite right. DON'T get what is called a "cover-up" tattoo. They generally look like crap. Pay the cash to get the error removed. Tattoos are NOT permanent in the sense that you cannot ever get them removed, because you can. Getting them removed is about, twice as expensive as getting them put in. And one plastic surgeon I know will clean up tattoos that have bled together a little bit or remove sections that you want to have fixed. Getting a cover-up tattoo makes this impossible, and you'll end up getting the whole thing removed instead of just a portion that you want corrected. It's also far cheaper than full tattoo removal.

so now that im getting closer to the age of 18, i am more seriously contemplating getting a tattoo, which i have wanted for quite a while.
My advice : keep contemplating it and talking about it with friends, it is fun and cool, but don't actually go for it.
My first question : suppose you had chosen a tatoo five years ago. Do you think there is even a remote chance that you would still like a tatoo that you chose at 13 ? It the answer is no, then what makes you think that a tatoo you chose at 18 will be to your liking at 23 ?
My second question : suppose I let you decide which poster would be in your room, but you would never ever be allowed to change it. I mean you would have to always have it in your room, the very same picture every day. Would you like that ? Incidentally, how often do you get bored of / change the poster in your room ? (note : I know you can partly remove tatoos for a large amount of money, but what is the point of even having a tatoo if you are thinking of removing it ?)
My comment : whatever you decide, decide FOR YOURSELF. Don't let us non-tatooed guys forbid you to do it. But on the other hand don't do it just because other people dislike the idea.

another question i have is can you lift things when you have a tattoo (for the first few units of time) or should you stay away from physical activity altogether?

I dont have a tat, not planning on getting one, but if or when I do, its not to be 'cool", its to remember what is important in my life, no matter what the future holds.
The name of both my kids. 1on 1 arm Jarrett Austin, 1 on the other Gunner Cole... and across the top of my shoulders, "Only God Judges Me"<<<this would be talked about surely be4 hand..but I think I would enjoy it much.
Ok..it confuses me how some people say getting their tatoo hurt like a *****..and others say they didnt even feel it?

Maybe I'm showing my age here but I don't get the tattoo thing? I'm 37 and it just wasn't "the thing" when I was in my late teens and early 20s. It seems to be all the rage now. I personally have never found them attractive or cool in the least.
My moms boyfriend got one on his arm recently (he's 50 something). He was proudly showing it off. All I could think to myself was "mid life crisis"...
these days, if some one about 18-26 tells you they have a tatoo, 80% of them have it on their lower backs or biceps. the other 20% usually have them all over or in plain sight or more hidden. the latter two usually are awesome works of art sometimes the first is too.
I drew a tat that I want but every other month I kept changing it but finally came up wih somthing I like. It's an all black tribal, resembles an angel in my eyes but everyone else see's the tribal and not the angel... just how I want :). Another 2 months and it'll be plastered from my left elbow to just below the collar.

pfft man you don't need a tatoo to make a trout, all you need is a permanent marker and a memory to draw one on your hand every day.

Seems the conversation has died down, but seeing as how I haven't been here for a week, I'll ressurrect the thread to add my comments...
Many have already said it, and I'll echo the sentiment - and that is to think long and hard before making a decision to get a tattoo... because they are for the long-run in most cases, and nothing is worse than to tattoo something on your body that you would later be embarrased to have or that you'll regret.
And Steve... kidding or not, your comment was baiting and not fair. While I know you are against them, your characterization would have me as "white trash" as well considering I have three tattoo's. Oddly enough... I have a masters degree, and work in a professional field - I'm pretty sure I'm not "white trash". Some pictures of mine can be found here (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/stevebo32/album?.dir=/3ee2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/stevebo32) .
I have three tattoo's - and I have zero regrets about any of them. Each tattoo that I have is symbolic to me, and therefore, has meaning. I have them in places that are easily concealed by my polo at work, and would NEVER get a tatoo in a clearly visible place such as forearm, wrist, or neck. As sad as it is, the reality is that tattoo's still carry with them a huge stigma and people make judgements about you when you have tattoo's. When people see a tattoo - particularly in a job interview (at least in most professions), it could severely bias a potential employer against you. Case in point... my current employer was quite excited to hire me - and I'm a very good social worker and very qualified for the job I obtained. However, I was at a conference this previous week with my supervisor and during a conversation one of the evenings, he made a comment about disliking tattoo's and made a blanket judgement about people who have them (completely not knowing that I have 3 of them). I realized in this conversation that had I had any visible tattoo's during the job interview - I would not have been offered the job here. Don't get me wrong - I like my boss... but at least on the tattoo issue, it will be kept under wraps at work (which is fine, because that's my personal life anyhow) - but it's an example of how bias can affect.
Also... getting a tattoo on your neck or wrist can be indicative of gang involvement and might also prevent you from getting work. A former client I worked with (a very attractive latina woman in her mid 20's) had an extremely difficult time finding work due to a tattoo on her wrist, and 3-dots near her eye (former gang involvement). She since rejected gangs and genuinely wanted to move on with her life... but the tattoo's served as a constant reminder of her former gang involvement and haunted her as she tried to create a better life for herself. This woman was very well-spoken, had great personal presence, was well dressed and groomed, attractive, and most importantly, was qualified for the jobs I had been sending her to apply to, but continually was rejected for them due to her tattoo's (which she couldn't afford to have removed at the time I worked with her).
Just a few thoughts... (it's good to be back, although it's going to be a BUSY week!)

Well, i just finished getting my tattoo about an hour ago.
For any1 too lazy to scroll back to my other post in this thread, here (www.ic.sunysb.edu/Stu/ipetrako/CursedSeal.jpg) it is. The picture is more or less actual size depending on your resolution/screen size.
It's located on the back/left side of my neck, where it meets the collar.
Unfortunately, i didn't get any endorphins that people keep talking about. It took about 15 minutes to do, and it felt like a needle-pointed drill bit pushing into my skin. Not unbearable though.

I hope the artist straightened out the lines a bit and made the cirlces a bit more...circular? I'm not ragging on you and god bless you for getting the tattoo but that drawing looks like a 12 year old drew it.

Yea, i asked him to make the circles perfectly round, which he did.
What do you mean by made out the lines though? I want the tat to look evenly throughout.

I should probably take advantage of the next few days of being alone in my house to go out and do something stupid while the folks are in a different country... But then, why go out to do it, when I can do something rash and immature in the comfort of my own home? :teeth: P-A-R-T-Y? Because I gotta! :yep:
