1. What is a map hack? I'm guessing it has something to do where a player uses some sort of program that maps out the whole areas?

2. Taking a screen cap after searching out an area is not illegal is it? If it isn't, is there a link or site I can go to, that has all the maps (jpg files?) of the areas in Diablo II:LOD?

3. How many different variations are there to a specific map (for example, Durance of Hate lvl 2) where the entrances and waypoint changes location?

1. I just answered that..in another thread asking about in in this forum.

2. and 3. A areas are randomly generated with the exception of some areas like Chaos SAnctuary, Cat4(andariel),

this page might help ( at the bottom)

http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/basics/

So if there is a jpeg pic, there is no guarantee that the map in the pic will be the same as the one you are on in your game.

1. it is a specific hack, that IIRC allows the user to have the map of the level, find specific monsters on the level, see all the items on the level, and all the items on charecters in the level. Im not positive on all of this, its all hearsay

2. ?

3. on nonunique levels there are semiinfinite number of distinct ways, howeever there are patterns in how diablo generates these levels.

2. ?

For #2, I've been going through areas and after finishing them, taking screen shots of them. For example, I have 3-4 screen shots of Cats lvl 2 (automap on), with the waypoints and entrances in different places. I was just wondering if someone has already done this before me and if there is a site that has all these maps available already...

Yah, sorry about that. I tried the search function for map hack in Newcomer Forum but it turned up no results :(

Edit: Ahh I just saw the thread. He posted his while I was typing out mine. Sorry about that.

Yams, I forget where I saw this, but there was a site out there (particular to Durance level 2) that has the 8 or so most common maps.

There is a trick to Catacombs level 2 though, and it's really easy. The entrance to the room with the stairs to cat3 will be "turned 90 degrees counterclockwise" from the room with the waypoint... so if the waypoint room exits on the east wall, sorta looking like a C, then the room with the stairs will look like a U. Most of the time, that means that you just "turn right" from the characters' perspective, but that's not 100% reliable... the room with the stairs could actually be further north than the WP room, but the room still opens from the top.

Was that confusing enough?

Last ladder, I did a huge series of andy runs, drawing out the different maps from the wp to the level 3 stairs. For Cat 2, there are less than 10 or so configurations of the path between the wp and the stairs. And I'd say they're all pretty randomly different. In one configuration, the stairs are literally about 100 steps away from the wp. (you walk out of the room, turn N, and they're right there) However, on other configurations, they're caddy-corner from the wp. And, while the rest of the level might change around this path, the path doesn't deviate beyond these few configurations. I imagine the same is true with durance 2 and other areas. I've noticed that the pit only has a few different configurations (sometimes they're rotated).

so, while areas are "randomly" generated, they're made up of the same basic pieces so that there are really only a few different possibilities to get from point A to point B.

While maps generated in Durance 2 are mostly random, you can check out these maps who's screenshots were taken by Dracoy:

Just click on the 'Mephisto Maps' link at the left.

He says that if you memorize most of them, you will have no trouble finding Durance 3. I can't confirm that, since I don't have the patience to study them, nor to do MF runs.

if you play singleplayer, you don't need to worry about maps re-rolling. they stay the same unless you change difficulty with that character.
