I'm not really a newcomer, but I am new to act 3 mercs. What would be good equipment choices? I really can't think of any sword to equip other than an ali baba for mf/gf. Do they benefit from faster cast rate and +all skills? I at least know they don't have mana. Any other information would be appreciated.

Yes, the FCR gear is the way to go, along with 'whale' gear to grab lots more life. The act 3's will frustrate you buy holding their ground & spamming iceballs (whatever) when they are surrounded: FCR will get them more shots at the baddies, and extra life will let them hang in there longer.

I don't know about the plus skill items - hopefully someone else can provide guidance.

+Skill items do enhance your hireling's skills. as do +faster cast rate items.

good choices could be:

harlequin crest, peasant crown for helm.

que hagans, skullder's for armor.

for the weapon it depends. you could go with culwens point for +1 skills, or if you have a fire merc, go with hexfire shamshir. it has +3 fire skills. suicide branch is also nice for the cast rate, skill, life bonus. i'm not sure if they can equip wands though.

for a shield you could go with lidless wall, or maybe a stormshield even.

By the way I don't think they can equip wands.
