What is upgrading a unique?

I understand that it's like bringing the normal to exceptional or exceptional to elite, but how do you do it? Also can you upgrade elites or will it wrap around to normal? Thanks.

there are horadric cube recepies to upgrade rare and uniques, from normal to exceptional and excep to elite. Only on non-ladder you cant' upgrade exceptional uniques to elite. you can find the recepies here (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml).

and there's no way to upgrade elites, they wont turn back to normal or anything.

Oh i see, i found it:
1 Tal Rune + 1 Shael Rune + 1 Perfect Diamond + Normal Unique Armor = Exceptional Version of Armor

1 Ko Rune + 1 Lem Rune + 1 Perfect Diamond + Exceptional Unique Armor = Elite Version of Armor
