View Full Version : Pets
Well...I am interested in buying a pet. Now I'm not talking like a dog/cat type of pet.
I was thinking more along the lines of some type of fish, reptile, snake, or some type of small mammal. Any suggestions on what is a good pet to have, and relatively easy to take care of?
I'm open to other suggestions as well.

rabbit
ten char
Prarie dogs or ground squirrels are quite fascenating and pretty easy to take care of. There are a few things you need to learn to get the most of the experience but it's a labor of love.
Or, can I interest you in a clean, low milage 'diller?
Haha, I knew as soon as I saw Freets name in my thread the dillers' would come up:D

Get a skunk. You know you want to...
Or maybe a coupla goldfish and some piranhas? Stick em in the same tank, for added effect

I hear Komodo Dragons are nice; their minty-fresh breath is their biggest, and most unusual, quality.
If you don't want that extreme you can try to get a chinchilla. They can be difficult to obtain but they can also be very good pets. They have naturally oily skin so you have to provide a special volcanic dust for them to roll in; I find their rolling to be really "neat". One bad drawback is that you aren't supposed to pick them up. Chinchillas can be fragile animals; it is preferred that you sit on the floor and let them get into your lap. They also like quiet, non-excitement areas so they are a "no no" if you have loud kids or enjoy turning your stereo up to super sonic levels.
Hedgehogs are cool as hell, and if you get one young they can be very friendly if a lil weird.
They are also pretty low maintenance.
But give them a really big cage (odd as it sounds..I used a kidde wading pool with high sides).

get a ferret, Long weasel things that can incredible things, Crawl under a closed door, bite your toes in bed.
You can litter box train them, But be sure to get them de-scented
Good suggestions.
But I dont have access to some of the mentioned pets...I live in Canada. (Nova Scotia to be exact) So some of my choices are limited.
Only the truly civilized live in the Great White North. Go Canucks!
Anyways...I'd say some kind of parakeet. You can definetly get them anywhere in NS. I went over to this family friend's house, and he had this greyish bird, with a red head. It was the most ugly looking thing you've ever laid eyes on, but I kid you not, it could carry on a conversation better than most people on this forum can!
Yes, I spose a bird would be good.
althought I dont want something thats going to keep my up at night squaking about random things:p

Don't get fish....i spent so much money on a stupid aquarium, filter, oxygenator whatever ....then i bought fish and they're just about as interesting as any piece of furniture in your house, except you have to feed them.

Let's see, we have cats, chickens, fish, various sorts of caterpillars, and hermit crabs.
Cats=Too normal and introspective.
Chickens=Very interesting but need lots of preparation (coop, run, etc.)
Fish=I like them, but they're more along the line of flower gardening than pets. Pretty to look at but basically nonproductive.
Hermit Crabs=Cheap and easy to take care of. Very active little buggers. They eat just about anything (my daughter's seem to like Ritz crackers and Cheerios the most).
My vote would be hermit crabs for a refreshing change of pet pace.

Rabbit. They are the best pets ever. But if you get a rabbit make sure to do your research because they can(and will) be little terror devils to anything that can be bitten and chewed on.

Get fish, I suggest a pair of Betta's. They say only one per tank but that is no fun.

Geez those things tear each other apart, it's insane
I've had two bunnies before..one died of some..thing, and the other one I had to give away because my mom was alergic to it.
Anyone have a snake or something? Are they expensive to feed..or wha.

Depends, if you get a small one you can just buy little feeder fish or pinky mice and those are uber cheap

get bettas if you're poor
get clownfish + anemones if you're average
get clown/picasso triggerfish if your're rich
get horn sharks if you're bill gates
Yeah, after it grows up you can uhh. Eat it or bury it.. yeah...
Clownfish and anemones are actually pretty cool. Especially when the anemone is opening/closing. And when you touch it..
Rabbits are definently NOT low maintenance.
Shaigon, I'm pretty sure you can get every animal listed in this thread in Canada...
...except for maybe the dillers...
I had a friend who had a chinchilla... another who had a ferret... and another who had a mongoose, for cripes sakes.
Yea I know I can get the chinchilla and stuff, my friend has one, and my brothers friend used to have a ferrett. But like..I mean stuff like komodo dragons.
How expensive can like..exotic fish be?

Heh. A little ot, but you live in NS too Shaigon? I'm in Dartmouth / Halifax :howdy:
Exotic fish, guess it really depends upon which type of exotic fish you're looking at. Maybe $20-$30 apiece?
Try this (http://www.zangfish.com/), just to get a feel for the prices. They're listed individually, under each link.
Yea I live in Dartmouth:p
Seems reasonable for some nice fish I spose...anyone else have some suggestions?
Here's a few interesting pets:
Porcupine - Cute but don't put your face too close. Not exaclty a cuddle pet.
Aardvark - Have a termite problem? Not anymore!
Koala - So cute!
Platypus - A little bit of everything all rolled into one!
Ferret dude not to expensive...they live about 7-10 years...fun to play with....and you can bring them with you almost anywhere!!!
I have 2 at the moment and had 2 others in the past that passed away. I use to bring one in particular to school with me in a regular basis. His name was Timone (yes I got him during the Lion King craze) and they chicks loved him!!! When a lovely lady would come over to see him I would use my favorite pick up line "Would you like to pet my weasel?" Always got a laugh and even got me some phone numbers!!!

A koala will tear your throat out and laugh the entire time. They may be cute but they are mean little SOBs.
By the way, dude, I was joking about the komodo dragon; I thought the sarcasm would be insinuated by my talk about their minty breath. It is well known that dragons have the filthiest mouths with the most foul breath.
I thought ferrett's were like...vicious?
Oh and about the komodo dragon thing..yea I found that a little suspicious, but I didnt really know cuz we dont have em around here anyway..that is if you can even get them as pets. I'm thmart:D

Get them young and train them, not vicious, just mischevious. Great escape artists, and very funny to watch.
Any idea on how much a ferrett costs?
And where to keep one as well.

This pretty much covers that question (http://ak.essortment.com/ferretbuypet_rqxx.htm)
Is that $75-$100 Canadian?
Is that $75-$100 Canadian?
That's an American website, so I doubt it.
I'm not having any luck locating any local pet store websites either >.<
Get the godliest pet a man can have.... a giraffe.... U will own everyone!
Yes...I'll be sure to uh...look into that.
