View Full Version : Mf
what's the best method for getting high % of MF.
topazes? waiting around to trade/find a great amulet? set items?
any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. currently, my lvl 24 sorc in the ladder only has 62% MF and I'm unhappy with this.
For newer characters, topazes are the way to go. Ultimately, you want to find a 4 socket armor and 3 socket helm and fill them with topazeseses. That right there will give you about 140-150 mf. If you're lucky, you can find a Mechanic's Helmet of (insert suffix here) giving you 3 sockets on a helmet plus another mod. I was lucky enough to find a Mechanic's Crown of Sorcery, adding +15 to energy to my 72% mf. Unfortunately, 4 open socket armors are hard to come by unless you're running around in certain areas on Hell difficulty with no magic find. Again, I was lucky enough to find a 4 open socket dusk shroud with decent defense pretty early on.
Other than that, it's mostly about getting lucky. Just keep all of the mf gear you find and use it. That will eventually yield more mf gear. I have to admit, most of the mf gear on my ladder necro is pretty ghetto (like the helm and armor, plus rare gloves and rare boots with decent mf), but I'm pushing about 400 mf right now easy.
What to wear depends on what you're doing and how you're doing it. High magic find doesn't help a lot if you can't kill anything. So you have to find a balance between mf and killing speed. For example, the amulet I wear on my necro only has 25 mf. That's not awesome, but it's the highest you can get on a rare, and the other mods are awesome (+2 to necro summoning skills, +22 life, resists, etc). Rather than get a 40mf ammy and kill slowly, I'll sacrifice the 15 mf there for the +2 to my skeletons and skeleton mastery, which adds about 40-50 damage to each of my skeletons, and also gives me one more skeleton than I would have otherwise.
Also, mf charms of any size or % help. Unfortunately, the only one I've found this season is a 3% large charm, but hey...it's 3% that I don't have to sacrifice killing speed to use.
Basically, how you mf is up to you, but just be smart about it. Topazes are a great way to start off, but hopefully as you find gear, you'll graduate to bigger and better things.

At level 24, you have access to Tarnhelm. Slap a ptopaz in there, and it's a level 18 req helm with up to 74% MF, 2 nagelrings will net you 30-60% MF. These are easily gotten from Norm Andariel. Your level 24 sorceress should be able to slap her around four ways to Tuesday... Get a 3 socket breast plate with ptopaz's and there you go, up to 206% MF with minimal investment, all available by level 18.

Great! Now how does one go about acquiring a Tarnhelm.....
gheeds is a pretty good mf charm although few ppl have it. um... some full sets give u decent mf. go to the arreat summit and look up set items. off the top of my head, i remember the angelic set is good for low lvl mf chars. You'll have over 100 mf if u have the whole set (i think).
You can run Norm Andariel for them, since you're probably not of a good level to run meph yet.
edit: sorry, I checked and Norm Andy can't drop it, but you can find it in Act 2 and on...
