The death penalty system thinger? What's that?

Anyway... err... what happens when you die on SP is simply that you lose the gold which you're carrying. You can run back to your body to reclaim your equipment etc. but it may be caught in the middle of swarming monsters.

On battle.net (in version 1.10), you not only lose the gold you're carrying, you also lose some of the gold (some or all, I'm not sure) which you've saved in your stash, i.e. your private little "bank".

Oh, you also lose a % of XP (I believe) though I don't know how much.

There are two kinds of death, hardcore death, and softcore death. Hc (Hardcore) means that once you die, you can never come back to life. Sc (Softcore) means that once you die, you press your Escape key, and you come back to life in the town of the act in which you perished.

As for losing gold, I'm not 100% sure on this, but you lose the gold that you had on you, and some of the gold in your chest.

For losing Xp (Experience), you will never lose experience in normal, in nightmare you lose some xp, and in hell, you lose a lot of xp. (I'm not sure about the penalties, and I'm sure someone else could help you with this).

Note: When picking up your body, you get a % of the xp that lost, back.

You end up starting to curse when youre around lvl 85, and youre really close to lvl 86 and you get IM'd out of nowhere and you loose about a 1/4 of your XP. Oh yes, feel the love :/

When I played today (on SP), I died and had about 50k on me. I went to collect my corpse and recovered about 25k. I don't know how they work out the amount but you do get some back :)

And a big j/k on not dropping gold when you're PKed.

Also, the amount of experience you lose is solely dependent upon your level. You don't lose more if you have 3/4 of a level as opposed to 1/4 of a level. If you're level 85, you'll always lose the same amount of exp.

PS, remind me not to die more than 16 times in a game....

Has anyone got through the game without dying once?

Oh, and if anyone can answer that in the positive, have you done so without lying? :)

Many people have, those 80+ level HC chars are kind of potential such characters. It's just difference in playing style, being more careful all the time, not rushing yourself into possibly dangerous situations and generally concentrating more on defence than SC players usually do. On SC people don't care about dying so it's most likely they've died even though they would have the skill not to.

Actually, I was referring more to playing the game for the first time and killing Baal w/o dying once in between. I'm sure those who've reached high levels on HC have at some point in their DII career died before. I just wanted to know whether anyone is lucky or good enough not to have died, even once, while playing DII.

heh that would be unlikely... we was all beginners once ;). I guess it would be "learn by your mistakes" which makes them better players as they know what would kill them and what wouldnt.

Like t'other day i was doing Hellforge run on NM with my high lvl sorc (Alone) thinkin i could easily take on the monsters so i teleported into the middle of them... uhh oops? From that point on i relised even one small mistake on any difficulty could get you killed. That was my lesson learned :p

I don't think there's anyone like that, everyone dies sometimes, even those veteran HC players and when you're playing the very first time everything was new, exciting, surprising and more difficult. Atleast it seemed so. We've all been like that.
*starts remembering the good times when things were new and not seen hundreds of times*
Now look at what you did...
