Hiya

My version is 1.03. I tried to update with a patch but it didn't work and I had to uninstall and reinstall to get the game working so right off you have to know I can't update the version.

I just got my first merc from the rogue encampment. My question is what do you have to do to give equipment to the hireling. I have seen in faq's and guides that you hit the o key. That doesn't work. I can't figure out anything to do it. If someone can fill me in it would really help a lot. Maybe my game is glitched, maybe 1.03 doesn't allow it....I don't know but if anyone has an idea let me know please.

Thanks

Is your game legit? If it's not, chances are you can't update it which is why you're stuck in 1.03.

To pass your merc (hireling) stuff and see his/her stats/inventory etc., you'll need to have DII:Lord of Destruction (the expansion pack) installed as well. I think it only works once you have the expansion installed and have converted your character into an expansion character.

[EDIT]
I just noticed that you're trying to update it with a patch? Since that didn't work, try connecting to battle.net. It'll update your game automatically. See if that works instead.

You have to have the addon installed to be able to give your merc stuff. And since you are running 1.03 it means you only got the classic D2.

As to your patch problem. Either you are using a cracked version of the game or you tried to install the patch for the addon, which won't work for classic D2. You need a different patch for classic D2. But as was said before, if you connect to battle.net, you automatically load and install the right patch.

But even with the 1.10 classic patch, I don't think you will be able to give items to your merc, that is only possible in the addon.

yeah I asked my uncle who gave me the game, I thought the play disc was something you made yourself but it's not. He told me that he bought the game a long time ago but lost the play disc and just recently his friend made him a copy of the play disc and he gave it all to me. So I guess I sorta have a game that is not legit but it sorta is. Either way it looks like I'm screwed for updates.

As for the hirelings, I don't like em anyways so I let the one given to me get killed and just wont bother with em at all.

I think there are gamers who play the game quite happilly without having a merc but they are quite valuable in the later stages. Perhaps you can play the game and see how it goes. If you do enjoy the game a lot, maybe you can try buying the Diablo II battle chest (which has DII, DII:LoD, DI and the DII guidebook). It's quite a good catch if you can get it for a good price.

diablo 2 battle chest only costs around $30 now i think in most retail stores (best buy, circuit city, etc.) Diablo 2 and Diablo 2 LOD cost $20 each.

All the more reason why it's a good idea to save up and just buy the battle chest. It's a great investment.

You are however warned that once you start DII'ing, you'll need serious assistance to stop (either that or your PC explodes...).
