View Full Version : Gem Shrine bug?
I did a search in this forum and couldn't find anything on this particular bug. I apologize if this bug as already been reported.
If you currently have a gem (of any quality) in you inventory and a gem shrine drops a gem of the same type as the one in your inventory, the gem in your inventory will be replaced by the gem you pick up from the gem shrine. For example, last night I was in Act V Normal. I had an Emerald in my inventory when I came to a gem shrine. The shrine dropped a perfect emerald and when I picked it up, only the perfect emerald was in my inventory.
I've had this happen a few times, both on and off realms, but I never reported it before b/c I thought I was just imagining things. When it happened last night I was absolutely sure that the regular emerald had been replaced and I knew it must have happened all of the other times as well. BTW, not only has this happened on and off realm, it has happened in several different Acts, and it also popped up before I bought the Expansion. I've only played 1.09 and 1.10, though.

Gem shrines will upgrade and drop to the ground any non perfect gems in your inventory, in this case, it upgraded your emerald ( i am guessing it was flawless ) to a perfect, and dropped it to the ground. read up on shrines at www.battle.net/diablo2exp
Just to add to what theBlackKnight said, not "any" in the "any and all" sense, but in the "any one" sense. So if you have a flawless emerald and a chipped diamond in your inventory when you click on the gem shrine, it could either upgrade the flawless emerald to a perfect emerald or the chipped diamond to a flawed diamond, which it will then drop on the ground. If you have no gem in your inventory, it drops a random chipped one.
So, 2 things to keep in mind.
1. When you come to a gem shrine, you probably want to dump all of the gems on the ground except the one you most want to upgrade, which is usually a flawless. In the example above, I would drop the chipped diamond on the ground and then click on the shrine to ensure I upgraded the emerald. Even better is to only carry around the 1 gem that you would most like to upgrade and leave the rest in your cube/stash.
2. Because it takes a gem out of your inventory and drops it on the ground, you want to be careful around other players, as they could then steal your newly-upgraded gem.
Oh, and I tend to get really annoyed if I'm carrying around a flawless gem to upgrade and somebody clicks on a gem shrine without a gem, making it drop a chipped gem (kinda along the lines of necros/sorcs clicking on combat shrines - what a waste of a good shrine).

Still a waste because they can never reach a high effectiveness from it anyways. No offense to those players though of course.

Thank you for replying without calling me an idiot.
Weird how I have been playing this game for years and I never knew that. Thanks.

Not always! It can be a way to eliminate a curse that a now dead monster put on you. I'd rather have a useless shrine than a deadly curse any day.

Just to add to the conversation... I have been doing some testing and I'm almost positive that a gem shrine will upgrade the first gem that has been added to your current inventory. Example, if you have no gems in inventory and then add a flawless diamond, and then pick up a few normal emeralds on the Blood Moor, and THEN hit a gem shrine, the shrine will upgrade your flawless diamond because it was added to your inventory first. As long as you always keep a flawless gem in your inventory (added before any other gems), you don't have to worry about dropping all other gems before hitting a shrine.
I'm not a 100% sure though... more like 84% :)

That's the usual clueless bnet players --- they click on each and every shrine, regardless of whether they already "have" a shrine or whether they need it. To go along with your example... sorcs with an exp shrine on their head have been seen clicking on combat shrines... can you spell "stupid"?
Heck, they even click on the bad shrines, so be careful...
It also includes health and mana shrines --- completely healthy? 5 hitpoints missing? Doesn't matter, there is a health shrine! Well? Luckily I'm down 5 stamina, so I absolutely must click on it...
Or maybe it's a pickit bug... does it try to pickup shrines?
Luckily, the ONLY shrine I'm interested in are gem and exp shrines --- the others I don't care about, as they don't give me anything (playing a Skelemancer).
And of course, I'm one of the people who have 1 inventory space reserved for a flawless gem :-)

Gem shrines are far too rare.

Very rare rune-shrines, on which you accidently click and get a nice El :)

Ya, ok..
I do gem shrine runs .. through the blood moore only. I use a fast teleporting sorc, with an inventory full of flawless gems .. I simply create a normal difficulty game, teleport like mad through the blood moore, and sometimes the cold planes .. then I save and exit, create new game .. rince repeat..
My best so far is about 1hour 45 minutes for an entire inventory (40) flawless --> perfect gems.. I know I would not have found 80 more flawless ones in that time .. especially ones of the right type etc. that I would have needed to create 40 perfect ones..
So, ya, running for gem shrines is definitly something that's worth while.. and yes they are fairly rare . but it only takes like 30 seconds to teleport around the blood moore.. there's always like 4 or 5 .. shrines there, sometimes more.. gem shrines pop up fairly often. The best I've ever found was 3 gem shrines in the blood moore .. all in a perfect row, about 2 yards apart from each other.
Not always! It can be a way to eliminate a curse that a now dead monster put on you. I'd rather have a useless shrine than a deadly curse any day.
If I was a Sorc, being chased by a Barb, I would click on the combat shrine, just to keep the Barb from using it.

Why not just upgrade them in your cube?
And oh, I didnt know about the gem shrine use either, I always thought it just dropped a random gem of any type and kind.
And also I dont think they are that rare since I come across them pretty often.

Sure, you can upgrade them in your cube .. I just find it much faster to upgrade from flawless to perfect using gem shrines.. Basically the tactic I described above takes like 30 or 40 seconds.. so lets say I have 1 flawless ruby .. With really BAD luck you'll find one gem shrine every 10 runs through the blood moore .. I find that usually it's 1 every 4 to 5 runs.. .. but let's say 1 shrine every 10 minutes. (that's putting 60 seconds for a run through the moore, they never take this long.) Now, unless I was really lucky, I woulden't find 2 more rubies in that 10 minutes to use the cube upgrade.. so creating games and finding a gem shrine is faster..
basically, I look at it like this: If I have an inventory full of flawless gems that I've collected.. (40 gems) I have 2 choices .. spend the time to find 80 more flawless gems of the same type that I have (in sets of 3) to create 40 perfect gems.. OR, find 40 gem shrines.. personally, since I've done it .. I find it's much faster to create a normal game .. with no danger whatso ever, load up on fast cast rate, put the 40 flawless in my inventory, create game, teleport through the moore, save & exit .. and repeat..
Make sure the gem is in your inventory and not your cube, it will not upgrade a gem that is in your cube. It will drop a chipped.
(found out the hard way)

Great idea, gotta try that out myself
This will make hoarding pgems to cube skillers much faster

It's not that stupid; some shrines don't have things above them so you have to hover your mouse over them and sometimes you are running around fast and have other things on your mind and you simply click it as a reflex
ok my 2 cents that i though squigi would have said in an earlier post but didn't see it.
before you create a game enter the chat room and click on the little gem dot in the middle of the screen down towards the bottom. it should start out blue and then turn to purple, and in the chat window you should see Gem Activated. once you do that you should have a gem shrine in every game you create, it might not be in the blood moore but that is one of the most likely places for it to end up, since it has the most shrines of any one place, with the exception of act 3 durance lvls. and if you always do it in the norm game lvl and you use a high lvl char you have nothing to worry about except time.
