View Full Version : Runes, a rarity?
Having smashed the soulstone, all I got was an Eld rune which isn't much. So far, the best rune I've found is the Tal rune (which I've got 2). I've found lots of other El, Eld, Tir, Nef, Eth and Ith runes but none of the really good stuff. I guess the Jo, Cham and Zod runes only appear on NM or so, right? Oh well... I'm still rune hunting... makes me feel like Indiana Jones or something.
Oh, and I just spotted this from diabloii.net -
In single player D2X v1.08 1 out of every 137 million dead mlvl 90 non-boss monsters will drop a Zod, on average. Better get into a Hell game and get started, eh?

This is actually called Jah. Diabloii.nets information is often terribly out of date.
If you come across any of the top half dozen runes in your playing career consider yourself lucky. ;) You can get up to Gul dropping from the Hell hellforge which is really the best source of a high rune IMHO. (If you're lucky enough to get a good 'roll' and not a Hel rune instead!)
This certainly feels like the stuff you can buy using your airmiles but it feels like I've got 20 airmiles when the cheapest item available is worth about 10,000.

Hmm... can I therefore assume that those sellers on eBay who proclaim that they have all sorts of runes to sell including lots of Zod runes are err... false? Well, false may be too strong a word.

No, they probably have mules full of Zod/Jah/Cham/Vex etc. Someone finds a Zod, several people start duping them, et voila, you have your NL environment where Highrunes are the currency.

In theory you find these in hell. However, the chance for a monster to drop a Zod is about 1 in 10 million - considering only those monsters who can drop that rune at all. Bosses might have a 3 times better chance, so good luck with finding high runes.
I'm playing the game for 3 years now and the best self-found runes were Cham, Sur and 3x Lo. I was told that I have been very lucky with that quota.

I'm playing 3 years too, and highest I found was Ist, Ohm, Ohm. My friend found Ber, Ohm, Ist. So one highrune per year ^.^

Geez, I thought duping is no longer possible under v1.10. I may jolly well be wrong, not really knowing very much about how duping works. Hmm... what's the fun in duping items, anyway?

Duping will always be possible no way for blizz to stop it that I can see. As to the fun of it, I can't see that either. As for finding high runes, outside of the Hellforge (2 x IST, 2 x MAL) I've never found anything over UM and that's in over a year of playing on Battle.net and SP.

I got myself a Hel rune from NM Hellforge, was chffed at that, the others where IO (bout 3) and today i seen a Lum but my mate grabbed it before me :p (Pit run/Hell)
Another Eld rune for me... ho hum. I guess playing on Normal is about as fun as running around with a straw as a sword in one hand and a piece of paper as a shield in the other.
Found my best rune thus far... wait for it.... don't laugh now... just a bit more... ORT!

hmm thats lucky....best ive ever done, and i have been playing a long time is an ist. i SAW a sur drop once...didnt get it. :(
i cant think of any real high runes ive ever seen drop otherwise. (disincluding hellforge..thought that only adds 1 ist to the mix.)

I've been playing for almost 2 years, and untill 2 weeks ago, the best rune I found was a shael (outside hellforge).
However, on my way down to Mephisto one day in hell, I opened up a chest, and got my hands on a Lo rune :uhhuh:
So they are there, you've just gotta...
a) search every chest, kill every enemy, check every stash in the game
b) have crazy luck :thumbsup:
I wonder why Bliz would create certain runes which are soooo rare. I suppose it adds to the enjoyment and thrill of finding one but it can be a little nightmarish having to look for one, more so when the BOTD requires a zod rune.

Zod's have been duped for a loooong time now, so there's no way they could have cubed the Zod in 1.09. Believe it or not, sometimes people do actually find a Zod, and one of those idiots was probably a duped or traded it to one.
@ Metroid_01: I don't really know if I'm lucky or you are unlucky, but in three years some good runes should have dropped. The first Ist and Ohm are from Cows btw, the last was in 1.10 second ladder found in Chaos Sanctuary.
@Jyde: They probably included them with the idea "ooh, let's make some very powerfull runewords for the lucky few who have a Zod, and let's not erase all the duped runes and give them an easy way to get to higher runes via the cube, so even when a botter finds a Lo at Pindle he's not to pissed." Or something like that ;)

HoD, I do agree with the 'drive' which Bliz wants to create to encourage people to hunt for good runes. I just think that the chances of getting such runes only helps spur dupers and encourages cheating. Bliz should've made these runes a little easier to find. Oh well... I can't complain... I'm busy hunting for better runes :)

In short, yes. They should have about 0.000xxx chance to drop one iirc.

12 mths and 1 x vex off Eldritch NL and last week Mal same place on Ladder 2. Aside from hellforge this is your lot in 1 year searching.
Scored my 2nd Ort rune. Will go hunting again today. I must say, even though I know the odds, there's always the tingle of excitement everytime I kill a monster in hope that it may be my lucky lucky lucky day in finding a Zod rune. Yes, it'll probably never happen but I just keep hoping that it does and it constantly pulls me back to the game. It's like the lottery, I s'pose :)
During the first week after the ladder reset I was lucky enough to find a Mal off a random drop in NM. You can get large quantities of everything up to about Sol from doing countess runs in NM. Haven't got my sorc up high enough to do hell countess runs, but I'm sure you can score some higher level runes from her (though the highest she drops is Vex).

Highest i have ever found was a lem in NM a5. Thank you champ venom lord (or whoever was in my blizz at the time)
But even with all of that i still prefer Amn runes :)

IIRC ist, but dont hold me to that :)
Ist is the last of her "special" rune drop... she is more likely than any monster/boss in the game to drop up to Ist.
However, she can drop higher runes, just not at a special rate. You'd probably be better off looking elsewhere for runes higher than Ist...

I'm not a great trader, but I read the trade forums quite a bit. There are some items to look out for that are valued at the equivalent of a high rune. Then the issue is finding someone trustworthy so your rune doesn't go "poof!"
BTW, you're guaranteed 3 orts, 3 rals, and 3 tals from normal, nightmare, and hell quest in act v - I think it's the soldiers. w00t!

The highest rune that I've had dropped (aside from NM/Hell forge which dropped me a Gul) was an Ist... but my favorite run to do is Countess... so I run her quite often.

Yes, it is the rescuing soldiers quest, and the runes are technically to make Ancients Pledge (RalOrtTal)... but I use them for crafting. :thumbsup:
Just so I don't get my hopes up, what's the best rune I can find in Normal (which is where I am atm)?

you'll probably find a lot of orts/thuls/amns/sols after a while to the point where youre sick of em, espsecially if you do some countess runs sometimes. I have so many Dols and Io's stashed away, when another one of those drops i'm like "not another one of those..." However, i've been playing on and off, probably about 2 years combined and the highest i've seen drop other than hellforge was an Um, from a chest... Only seen one Pul and Ko ever drop, never even seen a hel drop (i know thats weird), or a lum, fal, or lem drop.

Don't know if this was ever fully answered so, IST is the highest from the 'special' rune drop and LO is highest from her 'normal' items drop.

The runes i was more happy about finding was Hel, IO, and then Gul/Ko from Hellforge run last night.
Traded the Gul for Arm of leoric, which was needed for my necro!

My Palladin experienced an Um drop from the hellforge in Hell, I found that very dissappointing because I've hoped for more.
My sorceress took advance of the new high area levels i act 1, and recieved a mal rune from a fallen in the crypt or forgotten tower (can't remember) At the five minutes a seraph's hymn dropped. And I was quite excited.
(I checked diabloii.net for information, and it said ladder only, but I'm SP???)

For hell hellforge the drops range from HEL to GUL. Each has the same probability to drop so you have the same chance of getting a GUL as you do a HEL.

Bang in the middle! My last was a Pul, was quite happy could use it to make a Stone runeword armour or mightbe used at some stage to upgrade a weapon. Haven't made up my mind yet.
pul would be great! pul (cca)= ik armor!
oh well, maybe i'll do a few rush4forge on nm and hope 4 lem or pul!

If you are in search of some decent runes you should try hell countess, she drops a rune every time, granted they are not always the best. Make sure you dont try to find runes in normal, hell is the best place.

The highest rune findable in NM is LO (rune28), but good luck finding anything over about UM (rune22) the highest NM hellforge can drop.
I've been playing for a couple of months, and I got my best runes from doing the Hell Forge on NM and Hell with my necromancer ... found 2 Pul's there. The best the Countess gave me were 2 Dol's in 2 runs and after that she stopped dropping good stuff
Man, I ran around Act 2, NM quite a bit today and I must say it's slim pickin's. Okay, so I didn't do boss runs but Act 2 seems really rune-dry. I got myself several low level runes but otherwise, nothing really worth harping over. I did manage to find a few nifty rares etc but that's it.

Try to get to the arcane sanctuary (the second to last Act 2 waypoint) and run around in there. There will be a lot of ghost type monsters (specters) which tend to drop runes more often than most other types. they are able to drop up to Lem as well.

Thanks DD. Thing is... with such difficulty in finding good runes, how on earth do people actually end up making BotDs? Do they really find the Zod rune or are they just dupes?

Well in my cynical (and most probably accurate) opinion most of the Zod's are dupes. They would have been made by dupeing another high rune say a Gul from the Hellforge. You would still need to dupe another 255 Guls to have enough to cube a Zod, but once you'd done that you can easily make as many Zod's as you want.

That kinda sucks. So, most BotDs out there aren't really created from the hardwork of gamers? Tsk.... I doubt I'll ever see my own BotD but knowing that many (though not all) of those out there who have them had 'fibbed' to some extent to get them makes it a worthless quest anyway.

I've been playing D2 for around three years. I played SP for a long time before ever going online with it. In that time I've had drop 2 Ist (one from Hell Hellforge, one randomly in a baal run) 2 Gul's (same story, 2nd one coming from a monster in the outer cloister in Hell) and mostly Um's Since I play HC, Um's have a slightly higher value than in sc, but only slightly. In the first ladder season, I made a sorc specifically to do countess runs in hell. My best rune from her was probably Dol or Io. This was after about 500 runs. The actual highest rune I've ever seen drop was in a hell baal run, and a Sur or Ber rune dropped, but I only noticed it out of the corner of my eye as I was running past, and by the time the signal traveled from my brain to my mousing finger, that rune was long gone. Once you get into nightmare and hell, seeing those El's and Eld's drop becomes like a song stuck in your head. You're still humming away and it's still annoying :D

Whenever I'm charging through the WSK on yet another Baal run and I hear that sound of a rune dropping I always think "this time its gonna be a high one - come on" and everytime it's just another el/eld. :lol:

I keep them on my character till I've cubed them up to a Thul and then mule them off. It doesn't really add up to much, but I just can't bring myself to chuck them.

i almost always cube up my runes. The way i see it is that if i need a rune i ve either never seen it (highest was the lem that just dropped from NM forge :)) or i can easily run the countess 4-5 times and ill get enough to cube what i have and what i find to get it.
Ahh, I'll just go cubing my runes then. I've got heaps sitting on ATMA. Thanks!

For a few days I did try to listen to statistics and go after runes doing hell countess runs, she has the highest chance of dropping runes as far as I know. I got a pul and a lem from few days work, which isnt too bad. So anyway, that might be an option outside of just random killing in the pit. And chests are great too! All the mid-high runes I found were from chests/forge.
Got me a Sol today :) Okay, so it's not fantastic but it's better than the bunch of Els I've already got.

If it makes a difference, though I think not, my run arounds NM has produced little too. Thus far, I've only scooped 1 Dol and 2 Sols... the rest of Els, Tals, Rals, Orts etc are pretty basic. Nothing past Dol :( It kinda sucks.
Just when I thought it was getting sucky, I got myself an UM today!!!!
After whacking Hephasto and smashing Mephy's soulstone, the usual gems plus the UM popped up! Yay for me :)
