My CD-ROM is starting to bug out and likes to stop running while I'm playing D2, so whenever I complete an act, I occasionally find the game telling me to put in my D2 CD even though it happens to be in my CD-ROM already; the CD-ROM just isn't working. So is there any way to play D2 without the CD and without installing some kind of hack?

You can use a program (I think CloneCD does it) to make your CD into an image file, like an ISO or a CCD file, and then run it with a program that acts as a virtual drive.

I use Daemon Tools; it can create up to 4 different virtual CD-Drives. You can load the image file into it, as if you just put the CD into a drive.

This eliminates most of the machine-lag caused by monster death animations; that's why I use it.

Is it a downloadable program, and if so, how big is the file?

With Deamon you still lag, for example in act5. But the cd spinning thing is gone.

Daemon Tools can be downloaded via this link:
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5
It's 489 KB... not much at all.

CloneCD can be gotten from here:
http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
It's 2.3mb. I'm not sure if this is the program most suitable for this, as I have not tried it. I got the image from my friend, whom I believe said to have used this program to make it.

If CloneCD doesn't work, try a free trial of Alcohol 120% or Alcohol 52%:

The reason why a virtual drive helps me a lot is that I have an old and crappy CD-Drive, and a relatively fast processor (2.0 ghz). I don't know how well it would work with your computer, but I'm sure that it will eliminate at least some of the machine-lag.

I don't know about you, but other than internet lag, Daemon Tools completely eliminated all lag for me. Then again, I don't go through act5 too much, except to do Baal runs.

But is that legit? In my opinion, the short answer to this is no.

And the long answer....... Well.... still, no.

Inuyasha: Of coarse it's legit, as long as you own the original CD. Daemon Tools just acts as if you have up to 4 more cd-drives (Alcohol gives up to 31!). And to make the CD, you have to literally burn a copy of it, but instead of making it on a different CD, it burns it onto a file, called an image.

As long as you own the original CD, it is legal to make a copy for yourself, just in case something happens to the original, or to use the copy isntead of the original, to keep the original looking as good as new.

dave_simms44: As I said, I've never used Alcohol, nor CloneCD, so I don't know how they work. The format that I got my image in was .CCD.

I just remembered that if you have nero, you can probably do the same kind of thing. Just go to the place where you can make a copy of the CD, and select "Image Recorder" as the destination drive. Then just click burn and specify the file you want to make. Then, go to Daemon Tools, or any program like that, including Nero's Image Drive, and run the image. Nero's Image Drive sometimes comes with Nero's installation.

Yeah, I got nero and I just use burn image to disc.
One more question, when i mount the image on Daemon, how would I open it just click my D2 icon like before?

Yea, just make sure the Daemon Tools icon is in your quicklaunch bar. Otherwise, it works just as if you had another drive and a CD in that drive.
