I have been getting mad fatal exceptions recently. I have defraged, reinstalled, rebooted, and nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

I run windows 2000.

Yes, get XP so you can have 2000 that takes up more memory, great idea.

I hate him, that's close enough, he needs to sacrifice all his 30+ life skill charms to me.

Reformat.

Actually 2000 is typically very reliable. Windows 98se ha! 98 was a peice...

My recommendation would be to update your vid driver and install the win updates. If that dosent work you might want to check for any faulty hardware like bad ram or a screwed-up cd drive. Formating can be a major hassle so If you don't have to do it, don't.

Well Garbad I would love to tell you how I fixed my d2 always crashing on me but seeing as how I tried to start a conversation with you in another thread and you blew me off I think Ill just say GL getting it taken care of.

JEJEJEJE at the previous post. I'm sorry. I really did laugh at that for several reasons.

Anyways...I'd recommend going to XP. I've found it to be superior to all other previous Windows editions. I had D2 on a Windows 2000 version, on an older Dell. I got mad fatal exception errors as you have been; the spam from "blahblah has exited battle.net" is worse than my pindle-mfing spam. O_O

Anyways...I'm on a sucky '01 Dell that is slow as malarky compared to the brand new computer right behind me, and D2 still runs relatively well. I haven't gotten a FE error for as long as I can remember, and I believe it to be XP's doing.

xp ok

I would also recommend XP.. Although it sucks memory (and Microsoft has even CONFESSED that issue, and are trying to repair it on the next service pack).
I tried almost every OS in the market before I changed to XP! It's very stable, for a Microsoft product that is. I haven't got a single fatal exception since I got XP, and I hve used it for about 3 years now..

Actually dii used to freeze up on 2000 or have fatal exceptions on me too. After one of the video driver updates that stopped though.

2000 is just as stable as XP, if not more so, and uses up less resources and is safer. 2000 isn't quite as compatible with stuff though.

I find win 2000 to be extremely stable overall, just it seems to get a lot of fatal exceptions playing d2. I won't use winxp b/c of the propriatary stuff.

Where can I get these drivers? Windows update doesnt autodetect.

Yeah...

Im on ME

Yeah...

:grrr:

I get many lock-ups a day. BSODs, got them too. My comp doesnt even turn itself off when I shut it down. It goes into some sorta limbo, but doesnt kick itself off. That's after 3 formats too..

My laptop comes in a month or so

I run WinXP and I used to get a BSOD almost every 2 hours of playing. But that problem kinda went away on its own.
So I really don't think it's the fact that he's running Win2000.

I updated my video drivers, that didn't work. I wouldn't expect updated drivers to work either. D2 is a very old game and companies aren't gonna put out drivers to fix problems related to it. If anything, updating video drivers may actually cause more compatibility problems for a game this old.

Does your computer crash completely? Or is it just D2 itself closes?
If your computer crashes completely it could very well be a hardware problem, not software.
It could be that your computer is overheating, or there is a problem with your hardware.
Get some canned air and blow any dust off your video card. Strange, but doing that can fix a lot of problems (or so I've read). Also blow any dust that has built up in your fan vents and the power supply vent.
Check your hard drive for errors (not sure how to do it in Win2000, but in XP you go to My Computer > right click hard drive > properties > tools tab > check drive for errors).

Run a spyware cleaner. Ad-aware works great and is free. Spyware can cause lots of problems on a computer.
Scan for viruses (you never know).

My problem with BSODs kinda fixed itself, or I fixed it and didn't realize it.
I reinstalled many times, ran ad-aware, and scanned for viruses, checked my hd for errors and after a few reinstalls it just stopped happening.

I'm using XP, but I used to have these same problems too. All I did was run the video test and switch from 2D to 3D or the other way around. This fixed my problems, so I say give it a try.

I suspect we could go round and round on this issue and never resolve it as the true answer is probably hardware dependent (depending on your hardware, one version works better than the other), but, for the record, under Windows XP Home Edition, my computer freezes an average of once every two hours. Locks up completely, has to be hard booted. OTOH, for all the Diablo II I've done under it, Windows 2000 Professional has never crashed on me, not even once. I'm unsure if the more important distinction here is the 2K vs. XP, or the Home Edition vs. Professional. I'm planning on installing Windows XP Professional on my next system, so I'll find out then. Not holding my breath, though. I have customers that use both, and the XP customers have more problems, even the ones using XP Professional.

Garbad, open IE for this one purpose only, Tools -> Windows Update
It should detect your videocard (nVidia drivers at least) and some critical updates and bs that don't affect Diablo II :P
Installing Direct X 9.0b or whatever reduced my "access violation fatal exception c00000005" or something messages with ... 100%? :)
Haven't seen one in a loooong time.

And giving me 30+ life skillers helps too.

That doesn't get the newest video card drivers.

That doesn't get the newest video card drivers.

It does too

At least for nVidia cards.

Hm? No it doesn't. If you go to the website their newest update will be much newer than the one on the microsoft website.

Or maybe I just have incredible timing.

Garbad there's an easy way to find out what kinf of video card you have.
Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties. After that click on the Hardware-button. Then click on the Device Manager-button and up comes a list what you have in your computer (you probably already know this). Well in there you double-click on display adapters and there... There is your video card...
Hope it helps finding out what card you have.

Windows Update links directly to the last windows signed(tm)(r)(c)(pwn'd)
drivers, for nVidia and XP at least... and nVidia and 2000.. :)
