a question. since duress doesn't work in sp, (and I can't play online because our internet connection don't support ftp ) if you made duress online, and moved it to sp, would it still be like duress? not just a gemmed armour?

if you say "yes it will", I would ask anyone who reads this, and plays online, to help me out.. I've got a 3 socketed dusk shroud and the runes.
please... ?

If you mean open battle.net, then I don't think it will work. If you mean closed, then it's impossible.

If you play SP only, I'd suggest finding the phrozenkeep mod site. They have tools so that you can edit your own MPQ files and activate those runewords in SP. I say SP only since you won't be able to go onto b.net after you modify the file (unless you copy your patch.mpq file to another directory and move it back when you want to play on battle.net)

And what exactly does ftp have to do with anything? does d2 make an ftp connection to b-net in order to automatically download patches.. if that's the case and the reason you can't play online, then just download the patch through http from battle.net or whatever, install it and play .. if they don't offer it http, and only ftp .. I can grab it and make it avaiable over http on my webserver for you.

Slightly off-topic...

Is it technically possible for an internet connection not to support ftp by other means than having a firewall block the ftp ports? :P

Yes, every computer has a file (or in Windows case, a registry) that dictates what services it has available. Unix (Sun Solaris in this example) has a file called /etc/services, and in this file, if you don't have a line that reads:

ftp 21/tcp

to activate the ftp services on port 21, then you will not be able to use FTP at all.

err.. we've got now a modem switch (I'm finnish, not sure if I got that right), it's kinda like a hub, but it enables three computers to be online at the same time, without connecting again each time you turn on your computer. so... even before we got this switch, diablo couldn't connect to battle.net.. don't remember what it then said.. anyway, now it says that I'm not connected to the internet or something...

when it says that it's connecting to the fastes server, does it try to download some patch as you say? if it does, I'd appreciate it if you uploaded so I can download it with http. would be cool to get to play online :yep:

ok, San, basically you're firewall/router (modem switch) is not stopping you from going out .. however, it's stopping battle.net from connecting back to you. you have to let this port through. Probably the easiest way for you to get it configured is to call the company that makes the switch (their tech support line) and tell them what you're trying to do, they should be able to help you out. I have a linksys, if it's the same kind as yours I could probably give you pretty exact instructions on it, because I have mine set up.

Because this is your issue, offering the patch via http woulden't help you, because you still woulden't be able to connect.

I haven't found anything concerning internet protocols from the windows registry.
And even if I did it wouldn't be the "connections" fault. That would be a windows-firewall thingy then if something in the registry had port 21 blocked, u can block it from the TCP/IP settings Port filter list or something like that.

All Diablo patches are available for download from www.blizzard.com and/or http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/files.shtml which links to blizzard's site though.
