I haven't been around the game in a while, and some parts have really gone downhill since i left (maphack, duping, etc). So i was wondering if there are any scams i shoudl be aware of. Is it possible to get hacked by trading with someone? or just by entering a game with someone? Ive started to collect some good free stuff, and I dont want to loose it.
BTW: slightly off topic, but we are in the sorc thread, does anyone have Tals armor or ammy for trade? i dont wanna clog up the thread, so just PM me and ill tell you what i have for it.
thanks in advance.
Someone tried to scam me today.
It was my Stone of Jordan for his Shako. He showed and I showed and then he clicked the check green but it closed real fast - I never had time to check it. So again, I tried and the same thing happened, I barely had time to look at the Shako. Well this happened a couple more times and I was asking him what the deal was, if he was carrying too much.
So he says "Let me try again" and the same routine, only this time he tried to trick me by using some green peasant cap or something. If I hadn't hovered over it first, he would've gotten my soj for the crap helm.
Basically, he thought I would get frustrated with the screen closing and just see the green cap and click the check thinking it was a shako. DON'T DO THIS. ALWAYS HOVER OVER THE ITEM AND VERIFY IT'S WHAT YOU WANT TO TRADE FOR BEFORE CLICKING. I could see some people falling prey to this lame scam, so watch out.

One of the most popular scams is when someone offers a soj or talamu, moves it around in the trade screen (or saying he's out of space after you saw the soj or amu in the trade screen, walking away and coming back to trade screen), and just before he clicks "V" he replaces it for an unvaluable ring or an amu which looks the same.
The best way to avoid this scam is to be patient and ALWAYS check (by moving the mouse over the item) it's the right item right before clicking "V" yourself.
Another suggestion is not to participate in any suggestion that offers you something illegal (duping etc.). Just Say No.
And last but not least: Don't trade for anni. Since it can't be traded in the trade screen it's not safe. Don't use "drop trade" for anything else either. The trade screen is the only thing that protects you well enough.
Happy trading!

Depending on the lvl of character you play, and the way you are equiped i.e. twinked/untwinked people will try to scam you because they think you are new. i had this one person make a game called "Tals Ammy Cheap". I joined, and they offered a unid green ammy. They placed a tal ammy beside it, claimed the unid one was tals because they both looked the same. I kindly asked to ID it, and the person claimed the unid was worth more. I refused the trade.

Yeah drop trading is pretty dumb.
So theres no way i coudl get hacked jsut by going into the trade window? or just by entering a game rihgt?

Right, unless there is a mole in battle.net staff that will alter the whole battle.net just to scam you ;-)
seriously use your brain and common sense and you wont get scammed.. most of the time if its too good to be true it is.... i think if you get scammed you deserve it for being such a dumb ***.... i have never been scammed and am not that smart.. so if i can avoid being scammed i think everycan...
common scams
-anni charms/gheeds
-moving items around
-inventory full
never trust anyone expect if its a good friend... and before you click the green tick check the item and let him click the tick first so he cant switch it....

Another scam that, while not used often, is brutally effective:
In a trading game, person A shows you a shako. You offer, say, an ist rune, but he refuses to trade, saying that he will only trade for Hands of Broc or some other unique/set/anything that people don't ordinarily keep. So then you are like... damn... if only I had those Hands of Broc, I could get that shako for CHEAP. I better try to get them ASAP before someone else does! Lo and behold, when you enter the trade screen with person B (person A's friend) one of his FT items is Hands of Broc. So you are like, OMG OMG I WANT SHAKO *goes crazy*, and when he asks for an ist rune, you don't think twice before you hit that little green checkbox. Just don't be surprised when, after you trade your ist for those Hands of Broc, the person with the shako will have mysteriously disappeared.

When someone says no to an ist, its VERY VERY suspicious.
Runes are the only items that keep their value throughout the ladder, so if he prefers a lesser item then this rune, something should definitely be wrong.

and that old corker, tonight i was in a Trade game, gonna trade my Tals Helm for Shako, when this guy comes in and says "type /acn <details (i forget what)"
I was just laughing and just said, sure OK... You do it first and i might consider it. He left for some reason??

Ok Here
#1 Don't download ANYTHING except patchs.
#2 Don't trade with people who cancel or talk in all caps
#3 Don't trade anni at all (if you have or not)
#4 Laugh at people who try to scam you

yeah what LLD said and the moving around + no inventory space trick pretty much cover most of the scams.
#4 is the most important of the four, IMO.
Too bad, the good scammers (not the brainless ones) always have creative ways.
The Hand of Broc one is really interesting. I guess you'll just have to be careful.
Runes, rings, ammies, charms and jewels are the top choice of most scammers.

There are two scams that I know about that haven't been mentioned:
1. The person will tell you that they will give you a free whatever if you vote for their website. They say that you have to download a voting machine that tells them when you vote, so that they don't get jipped. The thing that you download is actually a program that takes control of your mouse and makes you drop all of your items. If this ever happens, I would reccomend doing whatever it takes to shut off diablo.
2. There is a program that a person can use to very quickly switch an item in their inventory with one in the trade screen. They will show you the item, then move it around a little bit. However, the last time they move it around, it will switch with a different item faster than you would think is possible. What I do to avoid this is only accept trades after they have accepted and I have checked the item to make sure it is what I think it is.
Hope that helps.

The first one is covered by my #1 rule and the 2nd one a lot have been patched, never worked, have trojans that in the end **** them.
never join a game with the word dupe in it, and also never hold ctrl and left click your cube while at a merchant it results in a drop.
