my folks are going away for a week of vacation, leaving me all alone at home. i plan to have a few friends over so that we can goof off, and perhaps even practice some street fighting.

however we are all just a bunch of scappers who know nothing about fighting. i had spoken to a martial artist friend of mine at school about training techniques that dont actually involve sparring/hitting someone, and he told me about a technique where your partner hits you really hard with a pad on a stick, and you have to swing and react as quickly as possible to hit the pad, rather than focusing on the pain. the idea is to condition yourself to retaliate, rather than becoming mired in your own discomfort, so that when you are in a fight you wont be like "ow, my teef herts," but instead you will strike automatically.

ive been googling for the past 30 minutes but all i can find is websites trying to sell me 60$ 'uber ground fighting and knife fighting techniques extreme' books. i guess im asking if anyone here can suggest some training ideas such as the one i mentioned before, that dont actually involve us just hitting each other until we get tired and stupid, but rather techniques that we can drill on to develop good habits without the flash of doing dragon kicks in the driveway like idiots. if anyone knows of any (free) websites that offer good ideas about training/drilling i would appreciate a heads up. in my mind im picturing those kung fu dummies that have the arms that stick out, and you drill on it by practicing defense of incoming shots and then striking. something like that, but without the dummy.

for reference, we probably have enough gloves for everyone to wear, although some are bag gloves and some are full size 14 oz boxing gloves. we have no headgear or shoes. sparring is of course not out of the question, but for people like us who dont actually know how to fight, it becomes a slap fest in which everything is a blur and nothing is learned. we are looking to develop some basic 'game savvy' so that we can have some kind of skill set to draw upon if we are actually pressed to fight. drills that help condition good reaction time, balance, speed, coordination etc is what we are looking for. so if anybody can provide some basic smarts or a site that can help i would appreciate it.

thanks.

There is skill to street fighting? Heres a hint : aim low.

Ick. Th, I think they're fighting to gain skill here. Anyone can aim low, but most anyone can't aim anywhere else.
Hitting a man, especially your friend (Inless on camera) is just down right low.
But what you should aim for, is gut shots, head shots, mostly eye, and then if all else fails aim for the lower area.
Actually, I don't know if that's any good.
The one thing I do know, is defence.
If you detect a gut shot before it hits you, then flex your abs.
If a head shot, try to move your head back as the fist hits, not fast like whip lash speed, but as it hits, move your head back with the fist, to release the power of the shot.
That's all I know.
Oh yeah, one mroe thing. If things degrade into grappling, then you should do it hockey style, pull his shirt over his head, and swing wild.
Oh yeah, more. The best thing to do in a fight is to move in close.

The first rule of Fight Club is: don't talk about Fight Club...
The second rule of Fight Club...

Hit them in the nose. Disables them pretty well. Hands go to face, eyes teear...open game on anyone's ***. That's if you can hit their nose. I suggest with the heel of your hand. Very strong...doesn't hurt to do like a balled fist would.

You could always hit em in the throat, with either a fist or point all of your fingers straight and jab in the throat with that.

Or you could actually start training some more fight/sparring oriented martial art. There's a lot more to fighting than hitting and/or being able to take hits.

Most likely you'd get access to a dojo or similar. Perhaps padded floor, more protective guards and someone who (hopefully) has a clue about fighting to watch over you and to give advice. Imho, fighting under controlled circumstances is damn fun, but streetfight with no knowledge at all, sounds dangerous and stupid.

Not just lacking the knowledge of what stuff you can do etc etc, but also the more natural stuff. The natural stuff that you learn to use when training properly. Blocking, footwork (incredibly important!) and of course striking/grappling.

Oh yeah..there are NO failsafe techniques. There is ALWAYS someone who is better. Common stuff, enjoy :P

Yeah. Either you'll all eventually go numb, or pass out.

Either way, it'd be funny as hell to watch.

You could also find a more intelligent way to pass the time. But hey, that's just me.

exactly. i think i need to be more specific. im not asking for actual moves, im asking for drilling techniques. we arent going to sit around kicking balls and palm striking noses until we are black belts. everyone knows that if you hit someone in the balls/nose they are going to be hurt, but if you actually have time to pick your shot, chances are the person you are fighting sucks anyway.

so, im asking for practice drills that develop coordination, as in ways to gauge the distance to your opponent so that you do not overstrike or understrike with a move. or balance, or timing, etc.

as for a real karate place, im not willing to spend any money on this whatsoever, even if it means i will be spared from real instruction.

You need instruction to be able to kick someone in the nuts?

Why are you so concerned with this, anyways? Is your city dangerous?

Get yourself into a physically abusive relationship. Learn to block her hits. Works wonders.

Acc now you dont go out renting cars under fake names/ids and go about getting into car crashes, in order to kick peoples' asses.

my friend's brother and i have some wrestling experience, and i find it to be valuable as far as foot work and balance. however, just as with sparring, when two untrained people 'go at it,' no one knows what they did right or wrong when they succed/fail against their opponent. you just end up in a heap on the ground, and the only thing you really develop is a tolerance for pain. this is why i want to learn about drills which emphasize skills which can be used to defend yourself, rather than just sparring over and over. like in rocky 3 where they try to teach rocky some footwork by having him bounce the tennis ball with his hand, etc. a drill which imparts conditioning without involving real fighting so that you can drill on it without injury, without equipment, or even without a partner.

Put a chair in place to the right or left of you. Practice your kicks by getting over the chair on attack and then back again into your set position (stance). Practice this drill, both legs, a couple of gazillion times.
