Well, my first HC char bit the dust last night. I had asked a few questions on this forum about making an Enchantress and the overall opinion was that it was a difficult first build. You were all correct. My death was, however, due more to stupidity than simply having a weak untwinked character.
At lvl 20 I was attempting to get the Meph quest with a couple others. The brave Pally runs right at Meph and starts wacking away. Barb says, "I am too weak" and hides in the corner where I am. I am contributing my lvl 2 Enchant (what a helper I am) and feeling like a yutz as I watch the Pally making very little headway. Soooo...I decide to be a hero and static Meph real quick while his back is turned. <F2> and I Tele over <F3> to Static, whoosh, whoosh, aargggh. I am dead.
Now it's back to a Summoner for me for a while until I can get some items that will help an Encantress survive a while. I know I was in over my head with Meph at that level, but untwinked, I don't think I woudl have lasted long even at lvl 25.
Anyway, thanks to all that at least gave me fair warning on what I was up against. I wont give up.

PS - LE takes on a whole new meaning in HC. What a rush!!
Ive lost two sorcs since the ladder reset. One lvl 21 (lag) and lvl 31 (too close to the big red guy). Untwinked is tough on a sorc, especially when used to leet gear. Hang in there and go slow. Act 3 is a great place for a sorc in her 20s to level.
Little "secret" for you that dont know.
Act 2 you cna easily hit 24 and 28+ in Act 3. As an Enchantress if you get an Act 2 Merc and play thru the game complete your merc will be at your lvl especially if he kills alot. Enchant him and let him kill for you. Snag yourself some javalins like 4 stacks and and shield and toss them, or pick up a orb with a cold skill and shill things for the merc, like Nova or something. Do all of act 3, if needed run the Flayer Jungle a few times, tons of exp in that act for lvls 22-28. Give your Merc a 3 sock weapon wiht one saphire, and maybe a big Emerald or topaz, but the poison works very well, Norm monsters have no rez to poison, hell he will smoke stuff. Frankly i am doing this right now in xpac with a Blizz sorc but using glacial and a Defiance Merc.
People dies in Norm because they either push to hard, or dont use thier brain!!! The game isnt designed to be at Meph at 20 so by God you deserve to die facing him. If you quest all of act one it is darn hard to get to Act 2 before lvl 14, and in a good size game is damn hard to get to Act 3 before lvl 22 or so, and 28 at Meph or so.
Simply just play the damn game people and you will live long and prosperous lives!!!
Enchantress + bow. Can help without being next to the evil dudes.

I built a level 55 Enchanter as my first character. It's not for the timid or the people wanting to hit 70 overnight. I would say 24 hours of play to make the build untwinked, and to hit that level.
Stinger's exactly right too. At 20 you should be doing Lost City or Arcane by that time.
I also noticed you said you TELEPORTED over and STATICed him. Those are two very unnecessary skills for a Chanter. Mine has max Warmth, Max Enchant, and Max Fire Mastery. She cannot teleport, she cannot static, hell she can't do anything else. But I wanted the lowest possible level Chanter because I knew it would be untwinked, and I melee'd all the way to about 24, when I could then start dealing damage with my bow and staff (+2 Enchant Leaf staff). The further you push your first untwinked character, the higher the odds of dying. She's now forever resting at Act 4 NM, waiting to go to the River of Flame because she hit 55 after Izual.
Now all I need are some charms and better gear.
A Ravenclaw bow helps tremendously with this build, but since I don't have one at the start of the ladder I took a bit of a different approach and actually got some cold skills as well.
At lv 24 Blizz and at 30 Orb help a lot. Especially since I now can kill Shenk and Eldrich alone and hope for some nice items. Started off well with Wall of Eyeless
And there is no way I would visit Meph at lv 20 ^^ (untwinked and with a weak group)
