View Full Version : Crisis in the Sudan.

In the Darfur region of the Sudan, Arab militias riding camels and horses are terrorizing the black population, they've already killed an estimated 10,000 people and over 1 million people have been forced into camps that lack the basic necesities of life.
If you were in control of your government (President, P. Minister, et.c) what would you do?

Scream for the US to go save their collective butts. Then do everything possible to make it the US's fault. Blame Pres. Bush for everything. Refuse to help because the US is being "too unilateral". Then scream bloody murder because the US is acting "unilaterally".
You know, the usual.

Levity aside, the US can't fix this problem. We're already committed in Afghanistan and Iraq and Central America and S. Korea and a couple dozen other places.
Let's leave this one to France and Germany. Let's see them show the world they can take care of a crisis. They can, right?

FYI, The AU has decided to send troops to protect the cease fire. The AU has also demanded that the troops be given authority to protect the refugees. That's right. There's civilization in Africa too.
This has been going on for weeks. Haven't you guys been keeping up.

I believe the African Union is sending 300 troops to protect their observers, 300 troops can not defend 1 million refugees, or destroy the militias.

They're there to make sure the people overseeing the cease fire are able to do their jobs.
Are you sure they're Arab militias riding camels by the way?

I'd make a snarky comment about how if they had oil, the USA would already be in the region.
Then as the USA, I'd take another look, so what sort of responses we've elicited since the last time we went into a nation, and decide that it wasn't worth the time. Plus, I'd be kind of annoyed that the world was essentially telling me that I could only use force when they said it was okay.

Yeah, the Janjaweed are Arab Muslims who are killing off the black Muslims, and I wasn't kidding about the camels either. ;)
I imagine they don't have alot of access to automobiles over there...

Did you read the thread? I don't understand what you're getting at at all.
Steve... yeah. I know. I just actually laughed out loud at the first part of that first sentence of the OP. It's so... you.
Smeg... the EU provided the concept for the AU. They also provide basically all the funding for it's military force meant to be use to intervene in situations like this.

I honestly don't know what I would do... but then that's why I'm a social worker and not a world leader. ;)

Why don't they ask for help from the UN? That sounds like a reasonable answer.
