am i correct in my understanding that the current ladder characters will never mix with the current non lad? i was told by more than 3 people that ladder characters, when the season ends, will move to a different non ladder. Thus, none of the non lad characters will ever be able to use ladder only items. Thank you to anyone who has any information.

Well, here's the official statement. As you can see, it's not very clear.
"End of a Season
The Diablo II 1.10 Ladder Season 1 will soon come to an end and Blizzard would like to thank all the players -- New, Returning and Veteran alike -- for making this a great Season. As a special treat to reward the Top Players from around the world, we will be immortalizing the Top 10 Expansion and Expansion Hardcore Characters in each of the 7 Classes on the Blizzard website. That's 140 players from each Realm!
Season 1 Ladder Characters will be moved to their own 1.10+ population when the season ends. Be sure to check back here for details on future Ladder Seasons."
Is this a seperate NL ? Is it just a sign or something that says you once were L ? Who knows...

I`m preety sure they`ll mix. My guess that "statement" is there to get some confusion&reactions.

I don't know why people are assuming this. As far as I can tell this will not be the case. I believe Blizzard is trying to say that hardcore ladder characters will become hardcore normal and softcore ladder will become softcore normal. My interpretation of "their own 1.10+ populations" is the population that corresponds to their character type (hardcore or softcore).
On the Arreat Summit it says:
"What happens when the ladder season is over?
All ladder characters become either Normal Core or Normal Hardcore Characters depending on what type of Ladder Characters they are. If you want to be a Ladder Character for the next Ladder season you must create a new character and flag it as a Ladder Character."
"Do I get to keep my Ladder Only Items when the season is over?
A: Yes. Any Ladder Only Items will be converted over when your character is converted to a Core character. These items can now be traded with other Core characters. That is the only way for Core characters to get ladder only items, as leftovers after a season is over"

That's old info, iirc it's from the FAQ when the ladder was first introduced. Blizzard obviously changed the idea to some extent. The 1.10+ thing never got mentioned, the special treat is also new. You'll have to wait to be sure ;)

That was such sweet news.. I can't wait to get my upped gores.. up'd shaft... up'd GA and all my sweet ladder only items on my old (rich) characters.. :)
Bah! Blizzard shafts the single player population again. More items that we (single players / non Bnetters) never stand a chace at getting. First we pay just as much for the game cost Blizzard less to take care of and what do we get in return. Items and special events that we can never even try.
Sorry guys just needed to release some built up anger with Blizzards ideals.
I think that Blizzard will make the old ladder characters mainstream characters after the second season is started. The 1.10+ that they refer to is probably the 1.10 normal characters + the 1.10 season 1 ladder characters.
I will not be surprized if new recipes, items, runewords are found shortly after the start of the second ladder season. I however, doubt that I will ever be able to try these new items since I do not have a connection that I can play D2 on the realms.
