I just logged onto bnet.
Some chars I just used a few days ago are now 59 days until expire.
I checked all my accounts and same thing.
Did I just lose 30 days? or did Blizzard pull a swifty?
It has been 60 since patch

Technically its 90. After 30 days of inactivity, it starts a 60 day countdown. Strange that recent characters had the countdown. I log into some of my mule accounts every 2 months and see 29 days left. Maybe a defective counter?
Hmm. But, if I leave my characters inactive for 60 days, they still have 30 days left before they expire, correct? The thing is, I'm going to Europe for the summer, for about 50 days. My question is whether I should get someone to keep them active or will they stay there?

That's a good question. I usually log in every 2 months or so to renew the timer and had no problem with that. If other people are having the timer start after a relatively short time that could be a bad way to do it.
I'm fairly certain it won't give you the 59-day countdown until 30 days of inactivity. So you DO have 90 days before they will be expired.
Also, there is a slight 'bug' in OUR favor for once.
If it says 'character expired', but its the first day of expiration (hasn't been expired for 2 days), you can still log on and save the character!!! (Another bliss n vs n-1 programming snafu). I've had this happen once, and my friend (who never perms his mules) has had it happen several times.
I guess I'll just get a friend to log on every once in a while :)

That would be the most prudent decision..... enjoy your Euro-vacation Oxy
