I can mule items like 1 at a time but that is tedious. However when I drop many items on the ground and try to switch characters I get disconnected just long enough for the game to disappear. this has happened twice and I have a feeling that it is no coincidence...anyway...can anyone gimmie a heads up as to whats goin on here and maybe how to work around it?

There are two methods of self-muling that I use on the rare occasion that a friend isn't on.

Method 1:
"The Quick Mule"
Once a game is made, you have about 45 seconds before the game will dissapear if noone is in the game. This is just enough time to drop one or two items, leave and then immediately rejoin and grab the items. This gets dicey if you are also changing accounts, but can be done. Not recommended for items of high value.

Method 2:
"Burn the Game"
"Burning In" refers to staying in the game a sufficient length of time so thatthe game to will remain for a considerable time after exiting. Normally this takes from 3 - 5 minutes of being in the game for a burn in. Make a game, go run meph or baal, etc for about 3-5 minutes, exit and then try rejoining. If the game is still there, then it is burned in. Drop your items then you can leisurely come and go to mule, xfer, etc. Game will stay up several minutes without anyone in it.

WARNING: If you try to join/exit repeatedly in rapid-fire fashion you will get IP booted. This is VERY BAD! By the time you can get back on the game will be gone. So once you join with a mule, take a couple of deep breaths before exiting, rejoining, etc. Don't get in a hurry!

Best Method:
"Friends"
Best way to go. Make game and have a trustworthy friend hold the game. Even if u get booted they can grab your stuff and wait for you to get back on. Best way for high value items.

you shouldn't mule with yourself, you can go blind.

One thing that I've discovered concerns Blizzard's 1.10 implementation of the temporary IP ban for switching characters "too fast." You may have noticed before that if you leave a game, even a burned in one, really quickly and enter really quickly with a new one that you can get an error message telling you that your modem isn't functioning.

Anyway, I did some testing a while back and discovered that it will let you get away with entering quickly and exiting quickly three times. If you do it on the fourth time, you'll get a realm down. So let's say you have an account with eight mules on it. If you wanted to refresh them all from being one day away from expiry, it goes like this:

Connect to B.Net, enter account name and password
Refresh mule #1
Refresh mule #2
Refresh mule #3
Exit
Reconnect to B.Net, enter account name and password
Refresh mule #4, #5 and #6
Exit
Reconnect to B.Net, enter account name and password
Refresh mule #7 and #8

Now if you take this concept and apply it to muling, you'll see that if you make sure to always reconnect for every three mules you enter with, you won't ever have problems with self-imposed realm downtimes. Of course, I always manage to forget about this at the most critical moments, which is how I've lost some exciting new gear in the past...

Might not be exactly the problem you're having, but it's good advice for anyone who isn't in the know.

I must have very bad reflex, as this never happened to me, and I always self mule using "burn game" method, waiting at least 10 minutes. I know it's not fast, but really, this is hardcore, and here every item is a bit more valuable.

I do not think you need 10 minutes, I did that for 5 minutes and never got problem.

You can also join a mulepark. A place where people join with new characters so that they dont have to play it for 2 hours.

Be carefull where you drop it though, there may be scavengers about :surprise:

Don't do this with a mulepark game that is almost full or where only a few characters are. Try to find one where there are 4 or 5 out of 8.

At 4 minutes 50 seconds the game will drop if you leave it.

At 5 minutes 10 seconds the game is 'burned'

Thus safe to assume that the wonderful 5 minutes is the time you need to stay in a game to burn it.

Its not that hard.

Take your sorc and run Norm Baal, Norm Diab, and maybe Norm Meph (if you're bored). May not get many uber items, but last night in 2 different mule games i got some frosties, a 27% nagel, and some other useful low lvl items.

I had to quit muling with myself because I grew hair on my palms.

The way I mule is I join run games or quest games like anya where people are too busy with anya to do otherwise. I drop my items behind gheed or something since he is where people rarely go. I then come back with the mule and they are there. This has worked everytime, save 1 where the run had just finished. This is also good for xfering. If people are starting in Norm or perming, I can throw my equipment behind the palace in A2 or in the tavern in A2 and come and get it. That method worked 100% of the time. Someone mentioned not joining an almost full game which is good info too. But if it takes you 15 minutes of waiting, you can still get your items if no one touched (be warned that the items WILL disappear if you don't touch them. This has happened to em while muling with a friend by tossing stuff on the ground.)

To avoid IP ban, you need stay in game for about 10+ seconds. I tested it, if I stay in every game for 12-15 seconds then leave, I never get IP ban, I created like 50+ games and still ok. Some expert may know the exact timer, but I just stick to like 15+. If once I left a game too fast, I left next mule in it for a long time.

Thx for this tip Silkweed! It works well!

No, I thought it was that you'd get hairy palms! Oh wait, Kurg admitted that one, then maybe it was that your ancestors can see you doing it?
