View Full Version : a question of survival doing baal runs
I was doing NM Baal runs last night and was up to level 71 and still leveling pretty nicley. I walked through the door to the throne of destruction , and before it even had a chance to load the graphics i was dead to burning souls (i believe that is the right name) lightning attacks. I had about 1.5 k life to to a barbs bo ; so how can i gaurd against these things. This is the second mf sorc ive lost before i ever really got them going and would like to know how to gaurd against this in the future. well im off to normal again to try and level another sorc thanks for your help. :buddies:

Max light res and slap on a tgods, you'll be able to shake hands with them afterwards.

i would love too but i dont have the gear for that i dont have anything on ladder as that was my only char. Each mfer i try to build dies before they actually get to do any real mfing. any other suggestions?

+ Max Lightning Resist is vital. Look at Diablo. Even with 75 Lightning Resist, his shock attack is still a *****. It's a bit uncommon for the usual unwealthy folks such as myself but when you find it, wear it. I wouldn't worry about the other resistances (except fire for the inferno attack).

Rebuild your sorcy... then MF NM MEPH... (no1 said your have 2 MF HELL - to get the goodies - even though u will be limited 2 the drop range of NM Meph) he will drop some decent gear after awhile, including Skullders / Vipermagis / etc..... then u can trade some of that gear for Tgods and what not...
Also depending on what realm your on... you can check the HC trade section on dii.net - some1 might be nice enuf 2 trade t-gods for pgems and such...
Dont tele Baals......
Dont wear MF gear lvin.....
Get more life somehow, 1500 with bo sounds low
were your resisits maxed? If not why? If not why were you leading everyone or teleporting Throne?
NM Gloams are not that damaging unless convict.

NM Gloams are not that damaging unless convict.
What he said.
If you're dying in NM with 1.5k life to Burning Souls, either get some lightning resist or a new computer.

Maybe sorcs are not your char, maybe baal isnt the one for you. Maybe learn to walk before you start to tele. Get some dmg and magicdmg reduce, it helps.

Grab some pgems and get trading. You can easily get a vipermagi and a mosers(keep 2 pdiamonds for this) and you have good block, fast cast rate and probably close if not maxed resists in NM. I agree with stinger, don't wear your MF gear for lvling and if people are bugging you to "TELE SORC TELELELELELELELE!!!!LJ(UEU" just say no.
Can only add a little bit more detailed info to what the guys above said, concerning real cheap equipment:
Ancients Pledge, about 40+% res all or RHYME with overall great mods. Heck, a 3 socket shield with PDiamonds gives 57% res all. Fantastic armours, belts, boots with 2 or 3 resists can be gambled in normal...I got lots of good stuff there, among them +39% FR, + 29%LR, 20% FRW boots, almost Nats little sisters.
With the 2 Anya quests, there really is little reason why you shouldn't be able to get decent resists in NM.
Okay...you can have a spot of bad luck with a tough boss spawn, but that won't happen all the time.
GL on your rebuild....maybe a Druid or barb this time?

Great character building advice from everyone so far. However, besides building the character, there is an art to playing the character. Here are some basic guidelines...
Never, and I mean ever, be the first one through the door (portal, stairs, etc.), unless you have over 5K life and can kill everything in the room single handedly.
Never, and I mean ever, stay in a "run" game that someone created out of sequence. For example, if sorcA has been creating games and all of a sudden baalrun23 is already there waiting for you without sorcA creating it, leave the game. You stand a good chance that waypoints and stairs will be trapped.
Never take a TP that the maker comes back through even if they say it's "1". If it's "1" why aren't they down there? Going back to never being the first through, watch everyone's health bar when they do go in. If they drop fast (especially a barb or a druid), don't go in.
Even if there are two people in the throne room when everyone else in in town, DO NOT assume the TP is safe. They might be working as team to try and get loot and then give a dirty TP. You would be surprised how often this happens.
Teleport to the throne at your own risk. The sorcs that teleport to the throne WILL, it's just a matter of time, lose their character. It's just a fact.
Watch the players that enter the games. You have to look at account names as well as characters name. If some TPPKs in a game, you MUST remember the character as well as the account if you don’t want to fall victim to the same person later on. Always match the character names with "was slain by" for a heads up on a potential PK (e.g., sorcA was slain by a_rabid_squirrel) . This rules falls apart for TPPK necros. Just assume all necros are TPPKs and you can’t go wrong.
Using these rules I have been able to get quite a few characters to level 70 with out using any stat point or skill points. Besides knowing how to play the game, you have to know how to play B-Net. Good luck on your future characters.

Yes, I agree with all that was said, lack of res or a lag could be the only reasons. NM is not that scary. Anyway, if you feel unsafe, just don't go there. I'm building my first mf sorc right now, and I don't even suppose I'll ever get her to hell. She's 66 now, and I still do eldritch/shenk/pindle, not even meph yet. If you're not rich, then first of all - be very, very, very careful. Everything will come in some time, believe me. Don't be greedy :)
I wasn't teleporting as i dont have enough life for that i had jsut taken a tp to worldstone 3 and everyone else had already went to the throne. as soon as i walked down the stairs i saw lightning and died my resist was probably about 30 for lightning at the time. also didnt really have mf gear because this is my only char i was focusing on surival. hmm im trying to find some + life items this time around and i will focus more on light and fire resist since cold isnt to terribly important until hell. thank you for all your help and as always any more advice would be appreciated :buddies:

30 res is too low, you're at risk from LEBs with that, and of course Gloams.
Max resists first, and then put on as much MF as you can without compromising those resists. This is not SC where you max MF at the expense of everything else.
Also, if you're thinking of skimping on cold resist, make sure you at least have it maxed for late Act 3. Otherwise Heirophants with their Blizzards, and Mephy's cold ball, will eat you alive.
i havent played sc in a long long time ; i did however jsut recently return from a year long hiatus so 1.10 is still pretty new to me. I wasnt wearing any mf gear was wearing my normal gear just didnt have very good gear. is there a certain item for sorcs that im missing that adds to resist? thanksfor the input.

Hm, nothing really new about resistances in 1.10 - wizzy, occy, mosers, viper, rhyme. Remember that grand charms can have up to around 30% res to single element, and 7% are easily found in act1 normal. Gamble for rings: yesterday I got one 11% prismatic, 30 fire res with stats. Gamble for amus. Sorry for these obvious advices ^^

Memphis,
Dont focus on "more" resists, you need to focus on "max" reisits. It is just a simple fact that if you run around certain areas wether it is Norm, NM, or Hell and you dont have your resisits in order you just are begging to die.
Save those Barbs and make that Ancinets Pledge, pick up a 3 sock helm of any kind and slap a few runs in it like Ral, Ort, Thul, if that doesnt do it find a socket armor and do it to that, stick Rubies in the free slots if you get the rez up.
Shop for more stuff.........Hell, it isnt hard to shop socket armor with life, or FHR or other mods, belts with life and a big like 30+ rez.
Gamble more belts, glooves, boots..........it is not too dificult to gamble (2) resists on each of these three items and they can also have other nice mods like life, mana, leech, dex, strenght....etc. Simply pick up stuff that sells well and sell it, hoard the gold and sit down and gamble it for 5-10 mins. Armos, wands, staves, orbs can all get you some nice gold......I constantly gamble, and some of the best items I have are gambled belts or boots.
The best item I have on any relm or any character is a pair of boots with 25+ rez in Fire/Light/Cold and 10 FHR and 20 FR/W. Now these dont gamlbe every day for you, you may only get one like thta in 2 months or so, but those (2) rez wiht 20+ and FR/w are not uncommon at all, and you can get similar on belts. (2) rez, nice life number, FHR...etc.
Dont forget about crafting also. You dont have to wait till 90 so you can craft +2 ammys, if you craft at lower lvls you limit your mods upping your chances at good resists. If you have a caster, try crafting a caster belt, or glooves........most of these runes and gems can be acumulated in Norm or NM contess runs, or cowing norm or NM.
Remember, crafting and gambling are not exact sciences.....you can gget, I mean you will get a bunch of jun items but you have the chance at reall good, solid items and possibly those really sick and uber ones also.
Also........quest rewards.....so many people skip things like the Gidbin quest, those rings he gives for reward can be some of the best rings you will ever get. I have gotten several 10FCR with dual rez and man or life or dex or str rings from that quest. Saving the Barbs.....sooo many people never do this quest, why not do it, use those runes to craft something, or maybe better yet pick up a (3) or (4) sock armor and toss those runes in that with a ruby and have a nice 30/30/30/38 FR/LR/CR/38 Need to fine a Thul, the Tal is poison, but those tend to drop alot also.
Rings and ammys, blue .........so many people just leave these lay on the ground, pick them all up, ID them you know magic blue rings can be damn good from time to time like say 10 Priz and 100 man.......now tell em this is junk? it may be in a couple months but it sure as hell is damn uber when you dont have much.
Dont forget, or learn these two little cubings.......(3) rings in cube make (1) ammy...must be magical, and (3) ammys make (1) ring......jsut another reason to pick up those rings and ammys, check thier mods then cube them, or at the very least sell them and gamble the gold.
Another little trick is check what people are discarding.......not jsut the stuff on the ground, check what they are selling. Hell, some people already have tons of crap and will sell some pretty nice rares between runs or while questing.
Last but not least, dont be in too much of a hurry and greedy not to check chests, kick urns, or ren/teleport past a boss back or champ pack. I dont care how much of a hurry I am in if some boss pack gets in my way I kill it, it could drop something nice and its good exp or at least it is good gold!
Greed and impatience kills more HC players than anything in the game. Taking that tp after being AFK without asking because you think "damn I am late might miss the drop or exp"......diving in for a drop. Be patient, ask for a new tp nicely if you are away for a bit. There may be one arse in the game and 6 others that are real nice, that tp may of been safe early but that arse may of trapped it knowing you were afk.
Above all things, use your head, this game gives you many ways to beat it, and it doesnt take uber and the biggest possible damage to do it.
thank you very much stinger i am working toward the goal of max reist right now and i all i need is about 10 more fire resist and it will be done. I tihnk i might run norm cows to find resist and life charms (is that a good place to look for them) and to level my mercenary a bit currently everything im using was found in act 2
all rares with multiple resist. ty again for your help
Cows can always provide goodies but they can always provide a quick death just the same. Even if youdont find what you want in there you can collect a bunch of gold, or items to sell for gold and gamble for better rez gear. Runes, gems, sock stuf and all that in there also.
