Defense helps determine whether the person will hit you or not, defense can be increased by the use of wearing armor, and blocking rate is the consistansy of how much you block. If you level up dexterity you can attain a maximum of 75% chance to block. with higher defense it's harder for someone to hit you in battle. Anyone care to expand on this?

Err.. formula for blocking is Chance to Block = [base blocking (Dex - 15)]/(Clvl * 2) I don't know what else I can do though :P

Plug in 75 for CTB, and then solve like an algebra problem with Dex being your variable. To find the shield's blocking, just look on the shield (or, in the case of Holy Shield/Guardian Angel/and let's say Herald of Zakarum, add up the values individually) or you can find the value at battle.net/diablo2exp or right here at diabloii.net. After you solve the equation, you know what dexterity you need at a certain level! This way, you can plan out your gear and your stats.

If you hit C (or a) to show your character stats, it shows your defense. This is pretty obvious, but what you might not know is that if you hold your cursor over your defense, a little box pops up that gives you the average chance you'll be hit by the last creature you fought, as well as your chance to block. You'll notice your chance to block isn't exactly what's on your shield. Depending on your dexterity, it might be higher (or I think it's possible for it to be lower).

As as side note, if you hold your cursor over your attack rating, it shows your average chance to hit the last creature you fought.

az, there are 2 stats when it comes to blocking, the chance to block, and your block speed. You'll see many shields saying +X% chance to block and +X% Faster Block. Faster block decreases the animation time when you do block an attack. This makes a big difference when dealing with many fast attacks, or if you're a character that can be affected by the whiff bug (The Fury and Zeal skills can auto-miss if the blocking animation is still active when you press the attack button)
