Nightfish wrote a good summoner guide so they got his name.

Hmm I guess everyone just thought it was a really sexy name and started applying it to summoners in general. Who knows, mb the new stuff GF was talking about makes trangs turn necs into a tuna instead of an ugly vamp ^_^ (I know some people like it...).
But seriously, I guess it just stuck. Like naked flesh to a leather chair in warm weather. (Never play d2 naked)

IMO names like Skellimancer, Fishymancer, Zookeeper, etc. do no justice to the glory of a pure summoner build. Whatever happened to calling them Overlords? That name kicks arse. Sure, the version changed from .09 to .10, but do the cool names have to change too?

The build has changed some. I still call mine an Overlord, because that is what he is. But if you do not have Mages, you can't call it an Overlord.

Yeah I s'pose.
My overlord is a throwback from .09, followed PoisonTrooper's guide almost to the letter, and I am surving in act 5 hell with little trouble. Killing speed is slow, but it's hard to wipe my army out.
Some necro players tease me about maxing Iron Golem, instead of doing the now fashionable one-point-in-gumby approach, but that wasn't the fashion in 1.09

Nope, It wasn't. Are you using Thorns Merc with maxed IM as well?

No, I'm using the prayer merc.

I never tried that approach. It would however make sense with the bad Skellies from 1.09. Too bad I can't try this again. I hate having to do a double install.

Personally I am a little bit annoyed by this.
A fishymancer is a basic skelliemancer with maxed Corpse Explosion as a support skill. Yet a lot of people call their skelliemancers "fishymancers" even though the only similarity between their build and Nightfish's is the skeletons.
I wish we had an authoriative build name list like the paladins.

I agree with you on that...guess it's because it's the "IN" thing to do. Even though they do just 1 part to a good build...for some reason think that Skeletons are the only thing needed to be a Fishymancer.
The Fishymancer's main skills as most people know are Skeletons and CE...so without having those 2 maxxed...and of course Skeleton Mastery...then they shouldn't even be considered a Fishymancer period.
I was Fishymancer a long time ago...but once I went Commando...there's no going back for me.

There's some confusion on which types of summoners are called what; so here's the list that was around in 1.09 (I add some 1.10 builds)
Overlord- All minions (tries to get as many minions as possible)
Zookeeper- Revives and some times skeletons
Skelliemancer (I'm dont know about the spelling)- Skeletons and some times mages
Lord of mages- Mages with skeletons as shields
Fishymancer- People that follow nightfish's guide

You forgot 1...the Commando. Before Commando...and though I have tried all the builds...my all time favorite was NecromancerLord's Zookeeper giuide. It was my bible for being a Necro in the first place. Wish I could find his 1.09 guide though.
Before I got my beast...it was NightFish's guide that got me what I needed for it. But...once your a Commando...it's tough to go back.

So what's stopping us?
I'd like to try out the Commandomancer, but as with all other wannabe Commandos, I'm too poor atm.

Then just make a Frontline General. It will still give you the feel of leading a bunch of undead skeletons in battle, but without the expensive kit.

You don't need to have a Beast (though it does help alot) to be a Commando. And kbob does list other options instead...until the Beast comes around (at which time...you will become a Necro god with it)
