Well, after our run to 5000 posts in the last Poll Dancers Thread, it was some good times, it was some bad times, but mostly fun times. Now the call to OT is back again in the latest installment of the Poll Dancers Saga:

Avatars that Pwn Joo!

Anywho, we all know the rich history of the D2 OT thread. People made of druids and the druids fought back with their only weapons. Spam. And lots of it. Well, finally getting kicked out of all other forums, they were made to make their own OT threads, as this fine example is. From Natures Brownies, Flying Camels, and many, many more names that I wasn't around for  to now, the Poll Dancers Saga, Let us enjoy some fine, high quality Spam.

Link to last thread (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/you.html)

Yes, garbad nuked that last thread. GG KK THX, Pwnt :hanky:

But to the regards of the last poll, the winning selection for the druids favorite pass time:

Don't Click this one!

Disgaea doesn't count because Garb haxxored the poll. Druids naturally love doing what they are told not too. Woot!

Well, as I'm not in the poll, it's time for me to sit back and start taking bribe offers to vote for people...

Well, the necro keeps the beat around here and I looked for an OT fix, and our thread is naturally slower than that of the druids, so I just made the next one.

Let's just say deleting the OT thread was an "administrative" decision and not incompetence. There has been some concern these threads are pure spam and that by deleting the thread when you want them closed it will deter spamming.

Trust me, you guys will like this better than the other proposed changes.

And btw, you aren't even close to the record. Some of the mods said in the old forum there was a thread in ETF? I believe that hit 28,000 posts. It had been open forever, etc.

:hanky: Well the Necro OT hasn't gotten crapped as we though DK would at 1K. I think he just doesn't wanna mess with it and let it run. We have wanted the OT thread to be named the graveyard for like, 3 OT threads now. Silly Mod.

Well if we really wanted to spam, we could just do hit and run tactics in the OTF, but then they would prob whine or something. I don't like the OTF. You can't even have an OT thread in the OTF. I mean its OT.. (which for the OTF, is OnTopic). God no sense of humor.

Dats why the Necro and Druid forums are teh 1337. Community isn't bad once in awhile. I only go to other char class forums when need be, and SP forum is the

I got a hypothetical situation for ya.

Suppose you could buy a business that would give you $100,000 a year without fail for eternity. It would never go out of business, change, grow, etc. Assume there are no taxes, inflation, etc, just the business.

Assuming you had the money, what is the most you would pay for the business?

This isn't a trick question or anything, and there is no wrong answer, I am just curious how much you think would be fair to pay for $100,000 a year back. After I get more answers I will tell you more.

Probably at least a million in cash. That's 10 years of getting it back, though, and with interest, probably 100.

So for real life, yeah. That would prob be it :cheesy:

Well, I didn't mean this as a time value of money problem, just a "value" question -- IE how much is 100k a year worth to you. Thats why I said no risk, no inflation, etc, etc etc.

Kbob gave a pretty good answer of what I wanted and a pretty reasonable one I think.

Something like that I wouldn't sell at all. Ever. I'd keep it as a family business. Although I guess if I wanted out of it (like retirement or something) and had no family to give it to then maybe 10 years or so worth of income in one go would be enough.

PS: Thanks again Dolph, those three items doubled my poison damage. Not sure if I'll use the Plague Bearer, as the Spine Ripper I'm using just now is faster and has ITD and PMH, both very useful stats. Yea but then you have to WORK for the money. This way you would just earn 100k a year no strings attached.

Assuming one takes the business at around 20 ... 10 years before you get return that would give you to the age of 30 before you started making profits. However if you invested that money well you could probably make way more than that .... so im thinking i wouldn't pay more than 500k ... reasoning is once you start investing high money % payoffs are larger.

Also note that 100k now wont be worth the same amount 50 years from now.

Yeah, what you are referring to is the time value of money. Problem with that is only you, me, kirsty (I believe she has a masters in economics?), TheDragoon, and maybe a few other people could handle the calculus involved. In any case, you have to assume a base compound rate which we would have to argue on before we could solve for value.

It would confuse the pups, so lets make it simple. :D

I wouldn't pay anything. With the right degree you could get a job that pays more than that and you'd just have to pay the cost of getting through college and a university.

This is a really dumb answer.

Not only does it miss the point (this isn't a career, its an investment -- you don't have to work at the business, you would just own it and get the profits) its also absurdly naive (less than 1% of college grads will ever earn $100k a year at any point in their life).

I'm actually kind of surprised Mep would give such a poorly thought out answer. I suspect mep's gonna be in for a rude awakening over the next few years if he was actually serious. :)

Anyhow, of the three answers so far, we have to toss Mepersoner's for ignorance. KBob said 1 Mil and Beo agreed, but said it would probably cost more.

The point of the question was just to see what people think a reasonable rate of return on a risk free investment is. For example, If Kbob bought that business for $1,000,000 he would get getting a 10% return risk free.

Pretty damn good deal for him, especially considering the market "risk free" rate is roughly 2% right now (10 yr us govt bond in case anyone is wondering what people consider a risk free investment), which would translate to the business being worth $5 mil. A little misleading though as the current interest rates are really low; A better measure might be the last 30 year average, which would be roughly 3.5% (after inflation), or the business is worth $2,850,000.

The question is interesting (at least to me) because it shows how poorly people estimate what a fair rate of return is. Almost everyone has wildly inacurate ideas of what a good investment will earn, etc. Its interesting to watch even educated professionals completely miss the mark on this.

Just so you guys know, the average person usually says somewhere between 1 and 2 mil.

Although your assumptions aren't bad, I said in the problem there was no inflation and it would pay this year and every year forever.

But year, you are right, venture capitalists make a killing if it pays off. 35% return is the usual, but its a risky business.

All I have to do is major in an engineering major or comp sci major and I have a job lined up to make 60K a year to start with a bachelor's degree(now it would require me makinga phone call, shucks) and jumps about 10K for every degree above that, plus the increase of 2% in wages every year for inflation and promotions/pay raises.. I think most of those people who don't make more than 100K with a college degree at any point in their life aren't looking very hard. The top pay goes to about 125K for this job (government job) and that was 2 years ago.

I'm probably going to major in psych btw, more interesting. I'll probably make like 30K a year until I get a better degree in that field. Then I'll probably go to school in other fields as well, because I'm pretty knowledge hungry.

As for "this is an investment you don't have to work". I really don't give a **** if I have to work? What's wrong with working? Your best argument would be that you would be able to work another job and make even more money. I doubt a lot of people would work while making that much money just because they're lazy, I probably wouldn't either. However, I LIKE to go to work and associate with my coworkers and do my job, and if I'm glad I have a reason (make a living) to do it. Work is a good source of a social life.

I'm always glad to hear you call other ideas ignorant though Wil, maybe you should consider getting a real degree and looking for a real job if you're concerned with the money aspect of things.

This is a really dumb answer.

It was just a really dumb question, as most arbitrary "what if" hypothetical situations are. Rule of thumb, it's a bad question when you have to ignore outside factors, expecially so many. Whats the age of our buyer, how much can he spend up to, how financially secure is he now, etc? If I were to die in 9 years, I don't see how anything above $800,000 would be worth it, even then it's a stretch. $800,000 could be alot of money, and probably wouldn't be worth going through the loss in order to get a gain, or it could be nothing at all making the job in heartbeat. I would love to pump a million dollars into saving bonds, but I don't have a million dollars to wait 10 years on. There's a reason why real life is, and the world isn't a formula.

The top pay goes to about 125K for this job (government job) and that was 2 years ago.

Realistically, about 80% of college grads are employed after one year in good economic conditions (some majors and schools do better, of course). In hard times, it is lower. Of those who are employed, probably 50% are employed in jobs that don't require a degree (secretary, phone solicitor, sales, TA, etc).

Interestingly, those majors that have the highest employablity (engineering, comp science, math, etc) and highest average starting salary are also the majors that are the least likely to get promoted to management, ownership, etc. Again, various reasons for this, but its a fact. Science and engineering are not the wisest path to $100k, although its a good respectable living.

Roughly 20% of people with a bachelors will get a masters. Work, debt, family, admissions, etc.

In case you don't know, a 2% raise a year won't cover inflation. In effect you will make less each year you work not counting promotions. Most people get at least a promotion or two in thier life, but very few will get more than that. The simple fact is it aways takes more people at the bottom than at the top. Some make it, most won't.

If it was so easy to make $100k, why aren't more people doing it? If you are going to have to work hard, why not get paid well? The evidence I have read shows higher paid people are in general much more satisfied with thier work so you can't well say people choose lower paying jobs because they enjoy them. Its true in some cases, but certianly not all.

As for "this is an investment you don't have to work". I really don't give a **** if I have to work? What's wrong with working?

And whats the precentage of people in lower paying jobs being satisfied with them? Just about every teacher I have ever had loves teachingm, reason they do it, not for the money. My mom is a librarian, my neighbor tiles floors, my friend is a dentist, etc. They all took those jobs not becuase of the money, but because they like doing it. Not everyone is satisfied with a desk job, not everyone wants to be an investment banker (shocking I know). There is more to life than money, you obviously fail to see that. Does this evidence also show how happy the person behind the counter at the DMV would be writing databses for companies? Does your evidence show how unhappy Bill Gates would be if he was writer in a news paper? It's nice to make a conclusion based on one thing (again discounting all factors). Reason the people at the top are satisfied with their work is probably the reason they are up there. If I had a huge interest in being a doctor, I would make an earnest effort at becoming one, improving, and being the best possible. Same goes for almost any other job.

Thats a good point and I am aware of that, but from what I have read, even factoring in things like that there is still greater satisfaction in higher paying jobs on average. Can't prove it without looking it up tho, so who cares anyhow.

That zoo job would suck. My exgf's little brother really loved animals and got a job at the la zoo. He had to do some crappy things but nothing like that. He was only 16 tho, so maybe it would have been exposing a minor to sexual material or something

when you say higher paying jobs are you refering to job titles or people who make a lot of money doing what they do ... (i.e. Are you saying most engineers are happier or are you saying that people who make $100 grand are happier?)

if your refering to the latter its because people who love their jobs tend to succeed in it ... passion goes a long way.

However, its also said that most people wont ever get their dream job because of the huge risk factor that goes into doing what they love. (There may not be even a job that does that, which means you have to build a position etc.)

Oh and meph .... it would be almost impossible to start a business with $500k .... Most business's have enough money to last 6-12 months with zero profit because a lot of times it takes time for the business to be known. .. and you couldnt buy a francise for that amount.

Thats a good point. I don't recall which (or both). I think it was just generally high paying jobs compared to low paying jobs, not high paid engineers vs low paid ones.

Good Distinction tho. I think it would be pretty obvious the low paid engineers would be more unhappy and less successful, etc.

18k graduates, done by the govt, covers every major, etc.

That report combined with what I learned in my major (for a while I almost when into HR). The bad thing about that report is it covers graduates in an economic boom, so I think its unrealistically high.

The avg for college grads is about $45k I believe I would suspect 25/75 range is 20k and 40k. I would suspect the mean is about 30k, with the higher earners (65k+ pulling the average up a great deal).

Thats for the recent grad stuff.

Garbad

P.S. You can also wander around http://www.bls.gov/ for some very interesting stats. The have all kinds of interesting things there.

P.S.2. Ah, found it. http://www.bls.gov/ncs/ocs/sp/ncbl0539.pdf See page 3 for the specific numbers. I was off a bit, but not by much. Avg, Hourly earnings for college grads in ths us is $21.09, or roughly $42,000 a year not counting benefits.

P.S.3. Also interesting is to note the highest paying average industries. At a glance, I see only a few professions that average over 100k a year (specalist physicians, economics professors (wtf) <--btw, psyschology professors revolt, they pay the econ profs 4x as much, law professors, judges, airline pilots (200k a year, wtf), didnt see any others.

Remember, thats the average of all ages also, and at this point america is older and presumably at the peak of productivity than regular, so average earnings can be expected to drop demographically.

Another funny one is the average pro athlete makes 52k a year. Must be a lot of underpaid minor leaguers. Waiters average $4.21 an hour -_-

P.S. Ok, I lied. The best job isn't a public administration manager. Its the airline pilot again. Not only do you earn great money ($120k a year, I was off above) but you get to see the world and only work ~22 hours a week.

yea to bad pilots have require a lot of physical attributes .... certain height etc. Also did you know that Americas overweight problem is causing problems with airplanes b/c between the high amounts of luggage we pack on planes and the new huge amount of weight that people weight makes some airlines ship luggage on other planes etc.

Just learned that today in class .... oh and um i was gonna be a pilot ... but im not anymore

Not having them. Some people don't appriciate the fine culture in the druid forum.

I'm studying Mechanical//Areonautical engineer and after talking with the head of the department at my university, most graduates hit around 50K-60K A year beginning. Top Areonaticals can get up to 65K.

That is at the beginning of a career, most average engineers make up to 70K I believe and higher up ones cane make 90K range. Not rich, but def comfortable. That is what I want :D

I just don't go for the boyish look at any age and young girls almost always have the "underdeveloped" physique. Training bra + 110 lbs or less is nt.

Even girls as old as 18-20 often still have girlish faces, which isn't bad always but its not...ideal. Still, some girls physically mature at different ages. I have seen some girls as low as 16 who looked good and some as old as late 30s that still were hot.

Of course, when I was 12 13 year old girls were hot :D

The only difference is what your doing not in what you know.. for the most part. I think the only place where a difference is distinguished is when you go to grad school ...

what i meant though is the stuff you have to learn in those class's blows hard. I would guess 50+% of aero's drop out of it sometime in their junior year, and from what i know the people that graduate with it have around a 3.5+ out of major gpa but a 1.2'ish in major gpa ... so they graduate just above a 2.0.

Only good thing about aero is that you can get an ocean engineering degree w/ about 10-20 more credits ...same concept just moving through a different fluid.
