If I have a 200%ed Arreats Face, is it wise to upgrade it? Because I heard that upgrading it might make the helm have lower defence then before...is this true?
Unfortunately yes. When a unique has %enh defence like Arreat's, it automatically gets max+1 as its base defence (before the %ed is added). For Slayer Guard, this is 121.
But when you upgrade it, the base defence is rerolled randomly. Slayer Guard upgrades to Guardian Crown, which has a big range 117-168. If you are unlucky and get 117-120 as your new base defence, the total def will go down. But you do have a pretty good chance that it will go up (it could go up quite a bit), if you don't mind taking chances with your 200% Arreat's Face and two decent runes...
Thnx, I guess that would apply the same with Gore Riders too.
Gore Riders don't have quite the same risk, because the max+1 defence for War Boots (54) is still less than the lowest possible defence for Myrmidon Boots (62-71), so you can be sure those will improve.
Whether the small def increase is worth the +83 higher Str requirement is another matter. But if you are playing a high-Str build anyway, no problem.

Not only the defense on Gores, but also, if you decide that you don't like the defense on them, I am sure you can find a high level PvM kicksin that will gladly take those boots off your hands...
