View Full Version : It's a Girl Thing

My twin daughters are stying with me
for the summer. One of the first things they wanted to do is play dad's game with the kicker girl. They are 8 years old and pretty smart in school so I'm thinknig 'hmm... If they learn to play Diablo II and start really liking it it will introduce them to all sortf of mathematic concepts they'll be seeing later and probobly help their reading level improve as well.
So I say 'no. you are too young this game is only for grownups.'
This had the desired result of nearly constant begging and pleading in a duet of whiney voices for almost an hour.
When I couldnt take it anymore i said 'ok ok you can try it but I don't think you will like it.
so they insisted on a sorc char named barbie. One manned the mouse the other dutifully ran the keyboard and off they went. 'Do we have to go out of town?' Yes. 'Those monsters scare me!' I'm thinking heheh wait til you meet stygian dolls. finally they ventured out into the blood moor but would have nothing to do with the den of evil (!) I'm raisng a couple of little Mariuses it looks like.
I left them to figure things out and went to make us some dinner and such. when I got back they had 4 chars all sorcs with barbie somehwere in the name all level 3 and 4. they put all the skill points into warmth becuase the icon looks cool. but they were getting frustrated that their chars died so much.
so while they ate dinner I made them a sorc. got rushed though act 1 and most of act 2 in a pubbie game them quickly leveled the sorc up to level 17. along the way i made a tirtir helm for it found a staff with +3 icebolt (The sorc's main skill) and a few other reasonable odds and ends .
When they came back I showed them their sorc and said ok have fun. I read teh paper and did some other stuff for a while while they played. 3 hours later they were still playing and not wanting to go to bed. they were very proud of what they had accomplished:
first thing: They sold all of the 'ugly' clothes I gave the sorc to charsi and experimented with various types of armor and the 2 helms available trying to get the right look.
second thing: They proudly displayed to me their inventory of wall to wall keys purchased at Akara.
third thing: I don't know what else they did in that three hours becasue they didnt kill a single monster as both agreed it was much safer in town. but they both were determined to play again the next morning.
Must be a girl thing
Well, at least you'll have an entertaining summer. Had a friend that called all of these types of games online dress up barbie. So they're just taking it that extra step. Whatever floats your boat...
Make sure you keep the volume down when they meet Alkor...that old bastard has such a filthy mouth!

*LOL*
That was too funny. I always found it amusing to watch the girlfriend and brother play D2 for the first time. Can't imagine my little brother.
I don't think I could stay standing with the amount I'd be laughing if I were to see your daughters buying keys for 3 hours if that's what they had done which I doubt. *still laughing*

So I say 'no.
That made me laugh. I actually am a big fan of keys. Always try to keep 12 in my inventory, but I remember on my first one he had about 120 total. I was forever opening chests.

My friends GF just started playing, and I usually hear here screeming "Oh god I died!" about every 5 minutes. She questions everything and won't go anywhere before she asks if it's ok.
So yes, its a girl thing.

LOL  It's not just a girl thing. I've encountered a lot of people (i'm guessing that majority are male) that must have that Archon armor for the "sexy look".
I let my little sister play once, but it only lasted about 10 mins. And the first 5 were spent saying how ugly all the chars were. And that she wanted the prettiest one. And the the last 5 were spent whining after she stood looking at a zombie and stood there as it slowly wacked away all her life.

The zombie must have been proud.
My little sister age 15 started playing this game a long time ago and she managed to beat softcore with a lvl 7x char, she made more chars in sc, got better and decided to try hc. She made it to lvl 15 the first time and I think she has a lvl 37 hc amazon sitting unused on her acct. I thought she was a pretty good d2 player but she stopped playing not long after she started.
Well my sister is 9(was 8 at the time), maybe that explains it
first time i played i picked the assassin because shes hot

I have seen many (I assume) manly players say they would not wear certain items because they are so ugly. At the Amazon Basin they used to have a fashion guide. Personally, I dont care what my chars wear, as long as they can chop up the enemy. And yes, I am female (although at 47, hardly a girl).
Hi Unholy_VI,
I really enjoyed your posting, it bought a smile to my face. Your little girls sounds wonderful, and I totally understand their wish to play a pretty character. My 8 yearold daughter was the same when I intorduced her to Diablo.
She begged me to help with getting some plate mail on her first zon, as she didn't like the idea of running around showing so much butt. Hey dad, this zon has no pants on. How can you kill monsters in your underwear ? :D
Kids are great at helping adults look at things with a fresh set of eyes.
I wish you and your family well in their Diablo adventuring.
Regards

What a wonderful post! Made me smile just reading it. ^_^ Your little girls sound cute.
Being female, I thought I better defend the rest of us with my own experience. ^_^ I don't think it's a girl thing... I've never done any of the things most of you have described, though that doesn't mean all girls are like that... I personally don't care if my characters are aesthetically pleasing or not, just if the gear is getting the job done. My boyfriend on the otherhand is always complaining about how my sorceress looks too "beefy" or "ugly" in her Tal Rasha set. Not to mention he's obsessed with his zon having a certain "look" about her. ^_^ So in support of everyone else's statement, wearing certain things is definitely a guy thing.
Again, great post! Take care!

Well I'm glad most people liked the story.
Of course the REAL question is will the girls be able (or willing) to uphold the Unholy family tradition of legit pking in hardcore. This could almost be the plot of one of those sappy feel-good family movies.
'Unholy_VI, the evil dastardly PKer always dreamed of having a son to pass on his families name, skills and reputaion to. what he got instead was...
'Dad... This sword is Ugly! Ugly Ugly Ugly! we don't like it and we aren't gonna use it!'
'Yeah! We want cool ninja stars that go with our boots and dresses!'
'Yeah Ninja stars! Ninja starts! Ninja stars!'
Of course various hijinks would follow and somehow Dad would get into trouble and the Girls save the day and Dad decides its better to be nice.
I could write for hollywood.

I live in an apartment with a pool and they HAVE to go swimming in it every day. I don't understand the appeal of cold dirty water but when I was a kid I used to love going to the pool too. good thing they are cheap to entertain right now.

I've told my wife that come August the newborn is going into the baby bjorn and hangin with dad in front of the keyboard. I expect the guidance to be a bit infantile, but training to be a professional Diablo player has to start young.

Great post, made me smile also :) I have two daughters also, but they are 3 and 1 now. They both like to watch me play. At least now I have a better idea of what must be going through their mind as they watch me play :)
My 3 year old also loves to watch me post here. She likes looking at the list of smilies because she thinks they are silly. :)

Thanks so much for the story! When I read this paragraph I actually did laugh out loud! Which isn't a good thing for an HR Director to do in his office by himself.

She may have a point. I will never have tals mask on my sorc it looks too ugly. Also, i always need to get that archon or fleece look on my zon ^.^. Who knows, it may be a guy thing too.

Of course the look is very important.
one of my favorite chars ever was my level 25 charge paladin on Asia when it first opened up. He was using a Dacian falx sowrd (Got a lucky imbue on the first exceptional item I found with my MF char over 100 damage and I figured the speed adn range would be nice).
He had a purple plate mail of some sort and a mask with red horns and of course holy freeze mostly for the sinister looking aura around his feet. the char got a lot of ears and I think honestly a lot of the chars he killed were a little freaked out by the way he looked. Poor Sam_Kinison died eventually to a level 35 ww polearm barb.
I'll never forget the fun of chasing people around act 2. I'd always go to the lost city first to try and make the lights go out.
So yes I agree that making a char that looks good is a guy and girl thing. I think its the rest of their approach to playing that I thought was very unusual.

I dont know if its a girl thing but one of the best Diablo players ive met is a girl and well yeah she doesnt really go for the look but what works best and how fast she can get 99. On the otherhand there is myself where i have another set of channel clothes for looks and then there is my leveling gear. IMHO an archon plate is ugly on a sin (wich is the character I play the most) I rather have wyrmhide or wire fleece.
It is all about performance, not names, looks or the bells and whistles.......performance.
Tals helm wouldnt go on my sorc as it cant beat my Shako! I would use Tals helm over Vamp in most cases also.
third thing: I don't know what else they did in that three hours becasue they didnt kill a single monster as both agreed it was much safer in town. but they both were determined to play again the next morning
Lol, that was my fav part of the story!
Playing diablo for 3 hours w/o killing a monster! .... just like the traders and dupers! Everyone plays for their own reasons I guess. Your girls just are into the barbie-doll part of it.
It has been known for a long time that amazons look best in circlets, because anything else covers up their cute blonde ponytail.

hahaha they are in softcore.
So no worries about TPPK. and as for the bad language they understand what they are and aren't allowed to say so I don't worry so much about that. I made a level 14 softcore kicker the other day while we were all playing and went pking a little bit.
The first game when i hostiles the other players tried to fight and even though my kicksin was weak she managed to drive two out of the game and one to town. the one in town said some pretty colorful things to me and the girls laughed about that all night.
This morning they snuck in my room while I was sleeping and turned the PC on and were playing when I woke up. They are building a singer barb apparantly. I was pretending to be asleep sort of watching them play. Their barb was killing in the blood moor and the one on the keyboard starts going 'Wait! Go back go back! Look on the gorund its a shortsword!' The other one got all excited and they picked it up and equipped it. A couple of minutes later they got level 2 and they opened the skill tree and Rachel highlighted howl and said 'Get this! This will be great!' So they got it and put it on the right mouse (See they are learning). then I couldn't help it I was laughing out loud watching the poor barb with the hand axe and shortsword running after fallen trying to kill them then howling at them and making them run away even more.
When the Girls started imitating the howl sound I couldnt take it any more I was busting up and they were so into it they never even noticed me. when they got level 3 they decided to get the skill with the heart (find potion).
So my question is does anyone have a howl/findpotion barb? If so what do you max first howl, or find potion? also is it better to use the short sword in the right hand and the hand axe in the left or the other way around?
