for starters, you'll probably need 2 cd drives.

no 2 cd drives needed, not even one is needed to play. make an image of the play cd with alcohol 120% and use daemon tools to mount it.

you can run 2 d2 either with a tool called d2loader or with a tool called vmware.

i see d2loader as coming from the bot maker, hack creator, i.e. dubious scene so i don't use it. vmware is a whole different approach and needs a more powerful computer than d2loader.

with vmware, you can "simulate" another computer on your existing computer, actually as many as your hardware can handle. you install another windows inside it, which can be a different windows or not even windows at all. you could use it to try linux for example. you basically treat it as a second computer running in a window on your desktop. inside it you would install d2 normally.

vmware costs $$$ though but offers a 30 trial period and requires a more advanced user than d2loader.

I havn't done it for quite a while, but I don't think you need any of that. Just install D twice into sperate directories and use a diffent cd key for each. You don't even need the other CD. When my GF (and I don't mean my grand father) used to play, we exchanged keys and used each others for muling, but we never exchanged the actual disks.

You can run D is a window, but I never felt this was a good idea, I just used alt tab to switch full screen games. The command line options are documented somewhere...

you cannot run d2 twice per default. there is a way to use windows xp's user switching to run it two times. just starting it as the same user when another is already running does not work. i just tried it.

There may have been a command line parameter. It was written up on diabloii.net, or maybe even here, a long time back. I didn't do anything with the XP user. It was pretty simple but I can't remember what I did now.
