i wanted to socket my etheral scarab husk, however, there appears to be a typo at arreats:

1 Tal Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Topaz + Normal Body Armor = Socketed Body Armor of same type
The number of sockets created will vary. The item must be normal and unsocketed. Low-quality items and superior items do not work. The item gets 1-4 sockets, randomly. However, the number of sockets is then restricted by the maximum number of sockets that base item with that ilvl can have. For example, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 5/6 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/6 chance of getting 1 socket.

what this means to me is that the chances on my scarab husk are:
1 socket: 1/6
2 sockets: 1/6
3 sockets: 1/6
4 sockets: 3/6

i really wanted 2s for prudence armor, but would take 3 for gloom or 4 for stone for a merc. i tried it, and got 4s. imho, the chances must be:

1 socket: 1/4
2 sockets: 1/4
3 sockets: 1/4
4 sockets: 1/4

should i keep trying?

Why should the chances be 1/4th for each? They're not.

For some reason blizzard made that recipe add up to 6 sockets, while armors can only have up to 4.

If an armor can have 4 sockets then 5 and 6 sockets revert down to 4. 3/6th chance for 4.
If an armor can have 3 sockets then 4, 5 and 6 sockets revert down to 3. 4/6th chance for 3.
If an armor can have 2 sockets then 3, 4, 5 and 6 sockets revert down to 2. 5/6th chance for 2.

Makes perfect sense to me.

I would keep trying. The only needs for eth armors are for Stone and Prudence, as I see it. Only if you get 1 or 3 sockets, it's a case for the Charsi. You don't find decent ethereal elite armors that often to ruin yourself by spending the runes and there is nothing else you could do with such an armor anyway, except for a guaranteed 4 sockets from Larzuk.

repair costs. a superior stone costs 40k per durability point to repair. a decent etheral prudence at @200% ed would be near the defense, half the fhr, and 0 the repair costs. purely for my char's playing armor, i wouldn't care about repairs for a merc.
